Pathways Listening, Speaking, and Critical Thinking, 2e Level 4: Unit Test

UNIT 8: HEALTH AND TECHNOLOGY

VOCABULARY: Lesson A
Read the text. Notice the bold words. Then choose the correct answer for each bold word.

The ability of doctors and other medical professionals to save lives and lessen suffering has improved by
leaps and bounds since the last century. In the past, if you had to consult a doctor, he or she might be able to give
a diagnosis and tell you why you were sick, but would probably lack the tools or medicines to treat your
condition. These days, in contrast, doctors can prescribe a range of medicines and treatments for most common
illnesses. They can also run a wide range of tests to clarify exactly what is wrong and which treatment is the best
option. Not only that, but we have gadgets, such as smart watches and fitness trackers, that can tell us whether our
bodies are in good shape or not. It’s not all good news, though. Modern-day patients have a tendency to expect or
even demand to be given some medicine when they visit the doctor, and doctors are reluctant to refuse this
demand even if treatment isn’t actually needed. As a result, certain medicines are becoming less effective against
some diseases, a phenomenon known as drug resistance that may have major implications for public health.
