The role of self confidence in the English language proficiency of Grade 12

students in Jose Rizal University.

INTRODUCTION

Feeling confident is one factor that can help us perform freely without being

anxious. Having self-confidence makes us more positive, being confident makes us

intelligent rather than lucky. Self-confidence matters for the English proficiency of

students. People from all around the world want to learn English, when in fact, we

are willing to do things that are not usual in order for us to have a conversation in a

multi-cultural aspect. Although it can be difficult, learning the English language is

incredibly rewarding. On your path to learning a language, every small challenge it

may encounter and overcome gives the confidence that is needed to advance

abilities and being more self-confident makes it more likely to try out the language.

As a result, practice more frequently which eventually will pick things up more

rapidly.

Self-confidence is vital most especially in learning English and being proficient

in terms of speaking the English language as the foreign language and reading

comprehension. With that, the purpose of this study is to know the role of self

confidence in the English language proficiency of Grade 12 students in Jose Rizal

University. According to Edward and Rogers, it goes without saying how important

the concept of self-confidence is and how it relates to language learners both inside

and outside of the classroom. The capacity to communicate effectively in English is

referred to as English language competency. This is a vital ability in the modern

world since English is nearly often the primary language of instruction in universities.

Thus, to determine the level of their English proficiency and identify students who

struggle with the language, practically every institution requires non-native English

speakers to take the TOEFL or IELTS test may not perform well in terms of

communication and academics. To have an effective study, this study will be focused

more on the grade 12 students of Jose Rizal University.

In preparation to their moving up to college, along with measuring the

correlation between demographic variables (gender, age, nationality, year of study,

medium of instruction, etc.), it also aims to investigate whether there is a significant

association between English proficiency, test results, and academic performance.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study revolves around two variables which are the self confidence and

the English language proficiency of the students. The English language proficiency is

the dependent variable of the study that is subdivided into four aspects which are the

speaking, reading, writing, and listening proficiency of the students.

Figure 1 displays different variables and constructs of the study. Box 1 shows the

demographic characteristics of the respondents which includes the gender, age, and

nationality. It also contains the importance of confidence of the respondents in a

variety of factors that includes: English Proficiency, Test Results, and Academic

Performance. Lastly it includes the difference of the given factors when subjected to

the variables or characteristics. Box 2 includes the process that would be utilised to

extract the data from the respondents that includes crafting a questionnaire,

Interviewing, Analysing the results, and the findings of the study. Box 3 comprises

the output of the study in the form of crafting a project proposal for the application of

the findings of the study and also recommendation for the research to be evaluated

further that is to be used on the students of Jose Rizal University

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In preparation to their moving up to college, along with measuring the

Specifically, it will answer the following questions:

1. What are the characteristics of the respondents in terms of:

1.2 age;

1.3 nationality;

2. What is the level of perceived importance of confidence among the Grade 12

students in terms of:

2.1 english proficiency

2.2 test results

2.3 academic performance

3. Is there a significant difference on the level of perceived importance of

confidence when respondents are grouped according to gender? age?

nationality?

4. What output can be crafted from the results of the study?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this will be great of benefit with the following:

The students. Self confidence is something that students may or may not

possess as individuals. It is common that learners has different levels of self

confidence due to their strength and weakness that makes them who they are. Being

a student means you are someone who is expected to learn from the others. Aside

from their teachers, they also learn from the people that surrounds them. In this

study, researchers will discuss how the level of one’s self confidence plays huge role

in the development of their English proficiency, specifically in English speaking,

writing, reading, and listening.

The teachers. The teaching profession is an occupational field in education

that is directly responsible for the formation of young minds and hearts. Students

naturally relies to teachers in pursuit of learning. This paper will help educators

understand the role of self confidence in helping students be more proficient in

English language giving them ideas on how they will incorporate these roles in

creating their learning materials in the future.

The researchers. As a person who performs systematic investigation,

oversees internal research and often serves as lead author on reports and articles,

this study help future researchers develop further studies that talks about the

significance of self confidence. Explaining the different roles of self confidence and

how it affects student will help them come up with other form of understanding and

ideas. Hence, the outputs of this study may be used as a basis for their study.

THE SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study, titled "The role of self-confidence in the English language

proficiency of Grade 12 students at Jose Rizal University," determined the level of

students’ English proficiency as well as those who are having a hard time using the

English language. It is particular to the parameters set by the variables affecting the

degree of English proficiency among Grade 12 students, which include test results

and academic performance. It also focused on specific variables incorporated into

the respondent’s demographic profile (gender, age, and nationality). Furthermore,

the study asked for the participation of the selected respondents, who are mainly

Grade 12 students from Jose Rizal University.
