Know your felt
Felt comes in a rainbow of colours and is easy to sew
with - give your craft stash a boost with this versatile material
Felt sheets are fantastic for craft projects as
the fabric doesn’ fray, is easy to sew with and
comes in a rainbow of colours. I's produced
bby matting, condensing and pressing fibres
together - these fibres can be natural such
as wool yntheti, such as acrylic; r a blend
cof both. For needle felting, you start with
Lunspun, uncarded woo! that’s widely avaiable
‘and comes ina wide range of shades. i

lots of starter kits available.
 
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FELT
Acrylic Flt
This lea known as craft felt ance 100%

find and great for rat projects. However its

WAYS WITH FELT
  
As elt does fay, it can be cut to exactly the
size and shape you want, but itcanbbe tricky to

fet shapes -use freezer paper, which has
sight wary side fr freezing food. ts widely
availble in superatkesin the US, o fom craft
shops or online i the UK for applique.
Trace your template onto the frezer paper
then ion ishiny-side down onto your fet. Cut
‘trough the freezer paper and fl long the
sawn Ines. Once yauive fished cuting, the
reezer paper will peel of easly, laving an
accurately ct shape.
You can sew fet by hand or machine, andi
doesn't matter which type of et you use, 28,

you need o unpick your sitches, the holes may

Backsttch forms a neat line which can be used alone or to
‘urine other stitches. Backstitch should be worked so that
all the stitches ae the same length with no gaps between
them. Bring the needle up at 1, down at 2, up at 3 and so on.
Continue stching inthis way, always working back on yourself,
Bring the needle up at 1 and down at 2. Bring itup again at 1

stitch length requires, Halding the twist firmly wth your thumb,

Straight stitch is very versatile as it can be worked to any length
land in any direction. It is particularly useful in pictorial work for
adding detalsand it can also be used to outline other areas of

‘Customise however you want ~
‘add more pom poms, switch up the
colours and fabrics, or cisplay your
favourite quote or song lyre. Taut
fabrics such as canvas work better
for the actual banner. For the
triangle contrast piece, any good
quality cotton fabrie wil do. You
can find a great choice of felt and
alter fabric at either wav,

the templates. Turn the fabric right
‘des (R5) down and iron down
1.5em from each edge. Cut an
iron-on adhesive triangle to the
same size as your fabric triangle,
Place this on top ofthe banner
piece, then put the fabric
triangle ontop.
