Theater Report
Theater is important for a few reasons; the first one being the preservation of
culture, as it allows to pass down historic events, stories, legends, and traditions from
one generation to another. This helps society to evolve and reshape itself, by
understanding its past and capturing the essence of all cultures.
The second reason is, theater acts as a mirror when it reflects all the issues a
society is going through in a specific era, it helps to view our culture from a different
lens, and it promotes the criticism of our values and behaviors.
A third reason is, connection; theater has the power to awake empathy and
understanding, helping the audience relate and work through their emotions which
provides society an opportunity to heal and work on mental and emotional well-being.
Theater has the ability to represent historical events in a way that is close to the
audience; it explores social, political, and cultural themes that engage people in
discussions and encourages society to examine themselves. It also presents untold or
forgotten stories, and this helps to have a more inclusive view of the past. Theatrical
shows provide a deeper understanding of the context and challenges of our past.
Through the usage of storytelling, set design, music and dance, and audience
interaction; all theatrical productions allow viewers to connect with multiple cultures and
contexts shown on stage. Theater enriches our lives by raising cultural appreciation,
artistic expression, and is a healthy entertainment option. It also allows audiences to
step into some of the characters’ shoes so they can connect on a more profound level.
More often than not, theater examines society’s issues that are complex; but by
having great narratives and performances, it opens the door for new ideas and for
individuals to re-examine their own beliefs.
Theater is an immersive experience, much more so than television. Watching live
performances and interacting with actors is far greater than watching a blockbuster on a
screen, and most viewers will leave the theater with a sense of belonging, of what it
would be like to have the life of the character on the play.
Theater offers a playground to students in which we can experiment, learn, and
reflect about important issues; it is an art form that fosters public speaking and
confidence as well as critical thinking by being present and on our feet.
Having attended a few plays at Espressivo and National Theaters, I definitely enjoy
seeing actors perform, the music as it relates to the play, the connection between
audience and actors and how all of us connect on a human level.
