Foreword
In 1940 a standard for Accuracy of Engine Lathes, developed b the Engine Lathe Group of
the National Machine Tool Builders’ Association, was adopted by t e NMTBA as an Association
standard and submitted to the American Standards Association for approval as an American
K
Standard.
Shortly afterward, the National Machine Tool Builders’ Association asked that the ASA Emer-
gency Procedure be applied to the present standard, to expedite its ublication. The members
of the ASA Sectional Committee on Small Tools and Machine Tool lements (BS), as key indi-
viduals in the sense of ASA Emergen.cy Procedure, were canvassed on this question and also on
E
the question of approval of the standaI’d as an American Defense Emergency Standard.
Upon favorable recommendation by the members af sectional committee B5, and the Mechani-
cal Standards Committee of the ASA, the standard was approved as an American Defense Emer-
gency Standard on May 1, 1941.
In 1948 the NMTBA adopted a set of tolerances for 40-to 72411. lathes and requested that they
be included in a revised ASA standard. They also eliminated the 36411. lathe because that size
had been dropped by all makers. These changes were approved by Technical Committee No. 25
in December, 1948, and recommended for adoption.
A revised draft was pre ared, dated February, 1949, which was approved by the sectional com-
R
mittee and submitted to t e sponsor bodies for their approval. During the review by the sponsors
some suggestions for additional changes were developed and were approved by the technical com-
mittee and the sectional committee. Sponsor a prova1 followed, and the proposal was then pre-
P
sented to the American Standards Association or approval and final designation as an American
Standard. This designation was given on April 7, 1952.
