DESCRIPTION
Srinagar is the largest city and the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It lies in the Kashmir Valley on
the banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus, and Dal and Anchar lakes. The city is known for its
natural environment, gardens, waterfronts and houseboats.
Gulmarg, known as Gulmarag in Kashmiri, is a town, hill station, popular tourist destination, popular skiing
destination and a notified area committee in the Baramulla district in the Indian union territory of Jammu and
Kashmir. It is located at a distance of 31 km from Baramulla and 49 km from Srinagar.
Pahalgam is a hill station in the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Mountain trails run northeast to
Amarnath Cave Temple, a Hindu shrine and site of the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. Overa Aru Wildlife
Sanctuary is home to animals including brown bears and musk deer. Northeast, the Lidder River runs through
scenic Betaab Valley. Southeast, Tulian Lake is flanked by mountain peaks and often frozen.
Sonamarg or Sonmarg, known as Sonamarag in Kashmiri, is a hill station located in the Ganderbal District of
Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is located about 62 kilometers from Ganderbal Town and 80 kilometres northeast
of the capital city, Srinagar.
Katra is a town in the Reasi district of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, situated at the foot of
the Trikuta Mountains, where the shrine of Vaishno Devi is located.
Leh is the joint capital and largest city of Ladakh, a union territory of India. Leh, located in the Leh district, was
also the historical capital of the Kingdom of Ladakh.
Nubra, also called Dumra, is a historical region of Ladakh, India that is currently administered as a subdivision
and a tehsil in the Leh district. Its inhabited areas form a tri-armed valley cut by the Nubra and Shyok rivers. Its
Tibetan name Dumra means "valley of flowers".
Pangong Tso or Pangong Lake is an endorheic lake spanning eastern Ladakh and West Tibet situated at an
elevation of 4,225 m. It is 134 km long and divided into five sublakes, called Pangong Tso, Tso Nyak, Rum Tso
and Nyak Tso.
Kargil or Kargyil is a city and a joint capital of the union territory of Ladakh, India. It is also the headquarters of
the Kargil district. It is the second-largest city in Ladakh after Leh. Kargil is located 204 kilometres east of
Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, and 234 kilometres to the west of Leh.
Zanskar, Zahar or Zangskar, is a tehsil of Kargil district, in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. The
administrative centre is Padum. Zanskar, together with the neighboring region of Ladakh, was briefly a part of
the kingdom of Guge in Western Tibet. Zanskar lies 250 km south of Kargil town on NH301.
Amritsar is a city in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, 28 kilometers from the border with Pakistan. At
the center of its walled old town, the gilded Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is the holiest gurdwara (religious
complex) of the Sikh religion. It’s at the end of a causeway, surrounded by the sacred Amrit Sarovar tank (lake),
where pilgrims bathe.
Chandigarh, the capital of the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana, was designed by the Swiss-French
modernist architect, Le Corbusier. His buildings include the Capitol Complex with its High Court, Secretariat and
Legislative Assembly, as well as the giant Open Hand Monument. The nearby Rock Garden is a park featuring
sculptures made of stones, recycled ceramics and industrial relics.
Ludhiana is a large industrial city in the north Indian state of Punjab. The Punjab Agricultural University is home
to the Museum of Rural Life, which displays pottery, musical instruments and traditional Punjabi clothing.
Nearby, leafy Nehru Rose Garden features ornamental fountains and more than one thousand different rose
varieties. To the north, Maharaja Ranjit Singh War Museum documents Punjabi military history.
Jalandhar is an ancient city in the north Indian state of Punjab. It’s home to Devi Talab Mandir, a centuries-old
Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Durga, with a tank considered sacred by devotees. The whitewashed
Gurdwara Chhevin Patshahi is a place of worship for Sikhs. To the southeast lies St. Mary’s Cathedral, a modern
building with Punjabi architectural elements, 2 domed towers and a pond.
Patiala is a city in southeastern Punjab, northwestern India. It is the fourth largest city in the state and is the
administrative capital of Patiala district.
Gurgaon is a city just southwest of New Delhi in northern India. It’s known as a financial and technology hub.
The Kingdom of Dreams is a large complex for theatrical shows. Sheetala Mata Mandir is an orange-and-white-
striped Hindu temple. The Vintage Camera Museum showcases cameras and prints spanning a century. West of
the city, Sultanpur National Park is home to hundreds of bird species.
Faridabad is the most populous city in the Indian state of Haryana and a part of Delhi National Capital Region. It
is one of the major satellite cities around Delhi and is located 284 kilometres south of the state capital
Chandigarh. The river Yamuna forms the eastern district boundary with Uttar Pradesh.
Kurukshetra is a city in the north Indian state of Haryana. It's known as the setting of the Hindu epic poem the
"Mahabharata." The text's great battle is depicted in a large diorama at the Kurukshetra Panorama and Science
Centre. West of the city, the town of Jyotisar is a pilgrimage site where, according to the "Mahabharata," the
sacred "Bhagavad Gita" scripture was first delivered.
Panipat is a historic city in Haryana, India. It is 95 km north of Delhi and 169 km south of Chandigarh on NH-1.
The three major battles fought in 1526, 1556 and 1761 took place near the city. The city is famous in India as
the "City of Weavers" and "Textile City".
Panchkula is a planned city and district headquarter in the Panchkula district, part of the Ambala division in
Haryana, India. The origin of the name Panchkula came from the place where five irrigation canals meet. At
present, it forms a part of an adjoining area to the Chandigarh, Mohali and Zirakpur.
Shimla is the capital of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, in the Himalayan foothills. Once the
summer capital of British India, it remains the terminus of the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway, completed
in 1903. It’s also known for the handicraft shops that line The Mall, a pedestrian avenue, as well as the Lakkar
Bazaar, a market specializing in wooden toys and crafts.
Manali is a high-altitude Himalayan resort town in India’s northern Himachal Pradesh state. It has a reputation
as a backpacking center and honeymoon destination. Set on the Beas River, it’s a gateway for skiing in the
Solang Valley and trekking in Parvati Valley. It's also a jumping-off point for paragliding, rafting and
mountaineering in the Pir Panjal mountains, home to 4,000m-high Rohtang Pass.
Dharamshala is a city in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by cedar forests on the edge of the

Varanasi is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh dating to the 11th century B.C. Regarded as the
spiritual capital of India, the city draws Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the Ganges River’s sacred waters and
perform funeral rites. Along the city's winding streets are some 2,000 temples, including Kashi Vishwanath, the
“Golden Temple,” dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
Lucknow, a large city in northern India, is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh. Toward its center is Rumi
Darwaza, a Mughal gateway. Nearby, the 18th-century Bara Imambara shrine has a huge arched hall. Upstairs,
Bhool Bhulaiya is a maze of narrow tunnels with city views from its upper balconies. Close by, the grand

Allahabad, officially known as Prayagraj, also known as Ilahabad, is a metropolis in the Indian state of Uttar
Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of the Allahabad district—the most populous district in the state
and 13th most populous district in India—and the Allahabad division
Mathura is a sacred city in Uttar Pradesh, northern India. The deity Lord Krishna is said to have been born on
the site of Sri Krishna Janma Bhoomi, a Hindu temple. Dotting the Yamuna River are 25 ghats (flights of steps
down to the water), of which Vishram Ghat is considered the holiest. Sati Burj is a 16th-century memorial
tower. Dwarkadhish Temple has a carved entrance and a black-marble idol of Lord Krishna.
Dehradun is the capital of the Indian state of Uttarakhand, near the Himalayan foothills. At its core is the 6-
sided Ghanta Ghar clock tower. To the southwest is Paltan Bazaar, a busy shopping area. Just east is the Sikh
temple Gurdwara Nanaksar, topped with ornate white and golden domes. In Clement Town to the city’s
southwest, Mindrolling Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist center with shrine rooms in its Great Stupa.
Mussoorie is a hill station and a municipal board, near Dehradun city in the Dehradun district of the Indian state
Uttarakhand. It is about 35 kilometres from the state capital of Dehradun and 290 km north of the national
capital of New Delhi. The hill station is in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayan range.
Nainital is a Himalayan resort town in the Kumaon region of India’s Uttarakhand state, at an elevation of
roughly 2,000m. Formerly a British hill station, it’s set around Nainital Lake, a popular boating site with Naina
Devi Hindu Temple on its north shore. A cable car runs to Snow View observation point (at 2,270m), with vistas
over the town and mountains including Nanda Devi, Uttarakhand’s highest peak.
Rishikesh is a city in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan foothills beside the Ganges River.
The river is considered holy, and the city is renowned as a center for studying yoga and meditation. Temples
and ashrams (centers for spiritual studies) line the eastern bank around Swarg Ashram, a traffic-free, alcohol-
free and vegetarian enclave upstream from Rishikesh town.
Haridwar is an ancient city and important Hindu pilgrimage site in North India's Uttarakhand state, where the
River Ganges exits the Himalayan foothills. The largest of several sacred ghats (bathing steps), Har Ki Pauri hosts
a nightly Ganga Aarti (river-worshipping ceremony) in which tiny flickering lamps are floated off the steps.
Worshipers fill the city during major festivals including the annual Kanwar Mela.
