Introduction
Abortion
Abortion is a medical procedure used to end a
pregnancy before the fetus can live outside of the
womb. It is illegal in Kenya and many African
countries and it is legal in Us and Canada.

AREAS OF CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING ABORTION.
HEALTH AND SAFETY.
Supporters argue that legalizing abortion provides safer access to healthcare while
01 opponents raise concerns about potential health risks and the well-being of women.
Approximately eight million more women per year suffer post abortion complications
that can lead to short- or long-term consequences, including prolonged chronic
inflammation of the reproductive tract and secondary infertility. (Guttmacher Institute,
2009).
LEGALIZATION.
02 Should abortion be legal or illegal? Supporters argue that women have the right to
control their own bodies and make decisions about their reproductive health while
opponents argue that it is the termination of a human life and should be illegal. Over
the last 25 years, more than 50 countries have changed their laws to allow for greater
access to abortion, at times recognizing the vital role it plays in protecting women’s
lives and health.
AREAS OF CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING ABORTION.
WOMEN’S RIGHTS.
03 Abortion is often framed as a women's rights issue focusing on a
woman's autonomy and right to make decisions about her own body.
Supporters argue that restrictions on abortion can harm women’s
health and limit their choices while opponents argue that the rights of
the unborn child should also be considered.
04 ACCESS AND AVAILABILITY.
Access to safe and legal abortion services is another area of
controversy. Supporters argue for the availability of abortion services
to ensure reproductive healthcare access, especially for marginalized
communities. Opponents argue for restrictions to limit or discourage
access, often for religious or moral reasons.

ALTERNATIVES AND SUPPORT.
05 The debate extends to the availability of alternatives to abortion such
as adoption and support for pregnant women; which could either be
financial or emotional support. Both sides discuss the importance of
providing assistance and resources to women facing unplanned
pregnancies.
06 GENDER EQUALITY.
Supporters of women’s rights argue that abortion is part of the fight for
gender equality and banning it places a restriction on their bodies which
is not applied to men. The only way women can achieve parity with men
in this manner is if they are allowed to decide whether they want to
have a baby or not. Criminalizing abortion is a form of discrimination,
which further fuels stigma around abortion.
Discussion of abortion from a legal and religious pov
Legal perspective
According to Wikipedia, as of 2022, countries that legally allow abortion on
request or for socioeconomic reasons comprise about 60% of the world's
population.
We found that abortion on demand is prohibited by law in the majority of nations
around the world. However, it is not totally prohibited when the life of the mother
and/or the fetus is in danger.
From a religious perspective, Abortion is prima facie wrong. Many religious
principles prohibit abortion. A perfect example may be the 6th commandment of
the jews and Christians stating :“Thou shalt not kill”( Exodus). However, certain
circumstances are excused by certain religions, such as Hinduism, which states that
abortion is only permissible when it is necessary to save the mother's life or in the
case of extreme deformity.
Discussion of abortion from an ethical and scientific pov
Ethics
Advocating for abortion as a solution raises ethical questions regarding the sanctity of
life. Abortion terminates a developing human life, and these decisions should not be
taken lightly. Every life , regardless of the circumstances of conception, deserves
respect and protection. Instead of focusing on abortion efforts should be directed
towards providing comprehensive sexual education to young people, strengthening
access to contraceptives and promoting responsible behavior.
Science
Techniques used in surgical abortions, such as dilation and curettage or vacuum
aspiration, can result in physical harm, hemorrhage, infection, and harm to the uterus
or other organs. Even non-surgical procedures have associated dangers, such as
severe bleeding, incomplete abortions necessitating surgical intervention, and
allergic responses to the drugs employed.Research on the psychological effects of
abortion also highlights possible dangers such post-abortion syndrome, which can
show up as emotional discomfort, guilt, and anxiety.
Solution
Having discussions around sexual
education in schools since it is
neglected in families.
Encourage parents to have such
discussions at home
We as humans have the ability to
decide what we want to do. We
are responsible for our decisions,
but God has given us that
responsibility, that option to make
decisions through our intellect
and will.
Solution
Addressing the root causes of teenage pregnancies may offer more
sustainable solutions. Factors such as lack of education, poverty,
gender inequality and limited access to healthcare contribute to
the prevalence of teenage pregnancies. By investing in better
educational opportunities, economic empowerment, and health-
care services we can mitigate the underlying causes that lead to
these pregnancies rather than merely treating the symptoms.
However, abortion is not a solution since it does more damage than
good. Apart from being a painful process, abortion can end up
killing both the potential mother and the unborn, whereas, keeping
the child would be safer.
