Today's topic is Preparing soil that you're gonna use for planting. Before I give you the steps, let me
share first why soil is important in gardening for food.
Land and soil are important for many creatures, as they serve as habitats or homes for us, including
plants. The land is where the plant roots anchor. The soil also contains most of the nutrients a plant
needs.
This is why proper care is necessary for farmlands and crops, requiring hardworking, patient, and careful
hands. Now that we know this, Nicolai will discuss the 3 types of soil in farming.
NICOLAI: Thanks, Shequina. You’re right, there are three types of soil we will discuss. These are silt, clay,
and sandy soils.
Silt soil, found on riversides, grows fat when mixed with decomposed animal waste, leaves, and kitchen
waste. Clay soil is sticky and can cause plants to drown or crack if dry. Sandy soil, mixed with sand and
small stones, is the opposite of clay. Most agricultural plants, like vegetables and fruit trees, like silt or
soil that is rich in organic nutrients. Make sure that your garden or farm has the right soil for your crops
to grow healthy.
To prepare your garden or farmland, use a rake or shovel to loosen the soil. This is called cultivation. To
add nutrients, make compost pits and add compost to the soil for natural fertilizer. Ideally, your land
should be big enough for the crops you will be growing. If your space is limited, you can plant in pots or
containers. Do you have something to add, Sophie?
SOPHIE: Yes, Nicolai. In addition, make sure that your land has access to sunlight and water. You can put
up fences to keep away from harmful animals.
Students should be knowledgeable about the different types of soil, and proper care of land and soil.
Create a visually appealing row of crops with an average width of one meter and length based on
planting area. Mark garden beds with four stakes and a long rope for easy plowing.
In conclusion, proper care for land and farmland is essential to make sure that there will be abundant
harvests and a healthy environment for plants.
But, we also need to learn how to take care of soil. Ajae, would you like to explain it?
AJAE: Gladly, so, taking care of soil.
This is the first thing needed in planting - the land to plant.
It is only appropriate to take care of the agricultural land because we humans are the only ones
who will lose if we do not take care of it.
Here is the following method of preserving and nourishing the soil.
We can add compost or fertilizer to the soil, it is important to use organic fertilizers. The
droppings of animals that graze on grasses are excellent organic fertilizers.
The soil mixture must be sterilized before planting to kill fungi or disease-carrying bacteria and
other organisms harmful to crops. Compost or humus, formed from decomposing grass, plant
leaves, and straw, is a cost-effective soil fertilizer widely used by farmers. JP, would you like to
tell us the methods of planting vegetables, and what crop rotation and companion planting is?
JP: Of course Ajae,
Method of Planting Vegetables
Direct planting involves placing seeds in a small hole in a planting bed, using a marker stake
and water to soften the skin and accelerate growth. Cover with loose soil and water to prevent
blowing away.
Indirect planting involves germinating seeds in a small seedling, while the soil is prepared for
transplanting new plants.
Crop rotation,
Crop rotation is a method of alternating crops based on weather conditions, with each type of plant
planted according to the season. This helps maintain the soil's health and prevents barrenness. For
instance, eggplant or cabbage can be planted during the rainy season, while vegetables like turnips and
patani can be planted in summer. This practice also helps to relax the earth and provides employment
opportunities for farmers. Overall, crop rotation and bio-intensive gardening are essential practices in
agricultural land management.
Companion planting
Companion planting is a method of polyculture that involves planting and propagating various crops
simultaneously on the same agricultural land to eradicate garden pests, promote pollination, and
provide habitat for underground creatures like worms. This method also helps to properly use
agricultural land by ensuring the proper care and benefit of the land. I think that’s it for me, Fatimah
would you care to do more?
Fatimah: Yes, JP
Intercropping
Intercropping involves planting multiple crops in alternate rows, ensuring plants do not compete for
nutrients, water, sunlight, and space, thereby reducing the need for competition in the overall cropping
system.
The importance of making organic fertilizer
Basket composting is a method of decomposing waste in a compost pit, which improves soil fertility and
crop growth, is an effective, inexpensive fertilizer, and can be used for two months or more.
Plant Care Techniques
In gardening, it's crucial to maintain a healthy and safe environment for both plants and the plant
operator. To prevent accidents or illnesses, use good-conditioned tools, ensure they're suitable for the
job, wear gloves, masks, boots, and long-sleeved clothing, and wear a hat or head covering when in
strong sunlight. Avoid scratching or rubbing your eyes while tilling or applying fertilizer, and be cautious
when stepping on wet ground. Balance the handle of heavy equipment when lifting, and provide a
proper container for sharps. Store furniture in a secure location and wash hands after work.
Systematic care of vegetable crops
Proper vegetable care is crucial for yield. Proper watering and soil loosening are essential. Tilling the soil
around plants allows roots to breathe, especially for fine roots and soft stems. Regular weeding prevents
the loss of fertilizer and water. Hand or proper weeding equipment can be used, but be careful not to
damage the plant. Monitor plant growth and check its condition. Talking to the plant is a scientific
method for flowering or fruiting. Adequate organic fertilizers provide comfort to crops. Watering should
be done in the morning and afternoon, and a fence around plants, especially if pets are present, is
recommended.
Any last words from our host?
SHEQUINA: Thanks Fatimah! I hope you learned something new from our group. Again, this is your host,
