1 Hi everyone, really happy to meet you again. I’m Hang Ho. We practice writing
today. We’ll practice how to write messages on mobile phones
2 Wow, look at the symbols on the screen. Do you use these symbols when you send
online messages? What do they mean?
I often use these stickers or symbols when I send message in Imes, Zalo, or
Facebook. They’re so cute.
Alright, let’s check. Symbol:
a) It means I agree. / OK.
b) It means I like it
c) It means That’s funny / That makes me laugh.
d) It means Well done. / You did a good job.
e) It means That makes me angry.
3 Ok, let’s get some practice now. Please read five short messages from a mobile
phone. Which symbol can you add at the end of each message? You can use more
than one.
This exercise is very interesting, isn’t it? Let’s check the answers.
Message 1: Well done on passing your exams! You can add symbol b or d with
the meaning I like it or Well done or You did a good job.
Message 2: Thanks for the photos. I love the photo of Sam in the funny costume!
You can add symbol b or c with the meaning I like it. That’s funny or That
makes me laugh.
3 Message 3: I’m at the train station but the train isn’t here. It’s late again! You
can add symbol e with the meaning That makes me angry.
4 Message 4: Thanks for the invitation to the film. Yes, I’d love to come. You
can add symbol with the meaning a or b I agree or Tool OK. I like it
5 Message 5: It was nice to see you at the weekend. You can add symbol b
with the meaning I like it
4 Writing skill: the KISS rules (keep it short and simple)
Read the KISS rules for writing short messages.
5 Now compare the pairs of sentences (1–4). Which sentence (a or b) follows the
KISS rules? Which rule or rules does the sentence follow?
a. I’m sitting in the café at the moment. Would you like to meet me here?
b Can you meet me now in the cafe?
The correct answer is b because it’s clear and very consise and it follows rules 1, 4
It doesn’t add unnecessary information and it doesn’t use two sentences when you
can use one sentence.
We can’t choose a because it uses two sentences when we can use one sentence
here.
2 a My English exam is today. Let’s speak at 2.
b I’ve got an English exam today but I’m free at two in the afternoon so
we can speak then.
The correct answer is a. It follows rules 2, 3. It uses number where possible and
don’t use long sentences with lots of conjunctions.
3 a See you next month.
b I look forward to seeing you again in a month.
The correct answer is a. It follows rules 5,6. It uses less formal words and phrases
for everyday message. And it misses out some pronouns like I, you and auxilary
verbs like look forward to
4 a I called earlier but you weren’t in. Can you please call me back when
you read this?
b Please call me.
The correct answer is b, It follows rules 1,4. It doesn’t add unnecessary information
and it doesn’t use two sentences when you can use one sentence.
6 Read these sentences and rewrite them as short and simple messages.
1. Would you like to meet me in town because I am visiting for the day?
(I’m) in town today, can we meet?
2 I’m sorry but I’m staying with friends this week so I’m not at home.
Sorry, I’m staying with friends (this week)
3 I hope you have a good time. I look forward to seeing you in the summer
then.
Have fun! See you in the summer!
7 You want to arrange to meet this week. Look at these instructions and write the first
message. Exchange your messages, read your partner’s message and write a reply.
8 Read and check all your messages again.
• Are all your messages short and simple?
• Did you follow the KISS rules in each message?
• Can you improve any of the messages?
