BAGUIO’S ICONIC THOROUGHFARE
Baguio City as the summer capital of the Philippines. One of the tourist spot of Baguio
City is the Session Road, it stands as a bustling thoroughfare and a symbol of the city's
continuous development and progress. Session Road started as a simple dirt path but has since
grown into a bustling area filled with shops, businesses, and cultural activities, symbolizing the
process of urban development and change over time. This place traces its origins back to the
American colonial era when it served as the main route connecting Baguio's central business
district with nearby settlements. Named after the "session" meetings of the Philippine
Commission held in Baguio during the summer months, the road quickly became the lifeline of
the burgeoning city.
Over the years, Session Road has evolved into a bustling commercial center, lined with
shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues catering to locals and tourists alike. From
traditional markets offering fresh produce and artisanal crafts to modern malls and boutiques
showcasing the latest fashion trends, Session Road pulsates with energy day and night. Beyond
its commercial appeal, Session Road is also a cultural nexus, hosting festivals, parades, and
events that celebrate Baguio's rich heritage and diversity. Baguio City deals with the challenges
of rapid urbanization and tourism growth, efforts have been made to ensure that Session Road's
development is sustainable and inclusive. Environmental programs, waste management
programs, and community engagement projects seek to achieve economic growth while also
preserving the environment and ensuring that the benefits of development are shared by all
members of the community.
According to Shirly Mogamog, one of the resident here in Baguio City “Session Road
are very popular to the residents even to tourist. I,ve been there many times because of the
errands, events, gimmicks and food. I know that mostly resident here in Baguio City experienced
or saw what Session Road be like if there is event and many tourist, it’s just like we are the
sardines in the can that “nagsisiksikan”. Session road also gives me enjoyment and fun, wherein
there are some performing dances, showcase their talents in art, make you laugh and other
more”.
