sportsmanship and leadership to students. this study investigated the impact of
leadership and sportsmanship training on students. 40 high school students (13 student
council members, 12 classroom officers, and 15 regular students) were asked to
participate 62.5% of these students have had experience being a student leader, while
the remaining 37.5% have not had any previous experience as a leader excluding
activities within the classroom. Each student was given a questionnaire, which
contained 5 questions regarding different skills essential to being a leader. After
analyzing our data, we found that 76% of the student leaders (student council officers
and classroom officers) answered the highest available answer, 3, on all questions
regarding their leadership skills, and said yes to whether or not they are team players.
The remaining 26% answered either 2 or 3, but they all answered yes as well. Most of
the regular students answered low, with 86.66% answering either 2 or 1 only. 46.66%
of the regular students answered no to the yes/no question. research shows that
students can gain many opportunities to learn about and grow into leaders through
sports participation. keywords: sportsmanship, leadership, sports, student council,

CHAPTER I
Introduction
The importance of leadership and sportsmanship to students lies in their ability
to develop essential life skills and values that contribute to personal growth and
success. Leadership and sportsmanship, when nurtured and encouraged, help students
become well-rounded individuals who can navigate various aspects of life with ease.
Leadership plays a crucial role in promoting sportsmanship among students. When
students are given opportunities to lead, they learn to take responsibility, make
decisions, and guide others. This leadership experience helps them to understand the
importance of fairness, respect, and teamwork, which are the core values of
sportsmanship. In sports, students learn to work together as a team, support each
other, and handle both victories and defeats with grace. Sportsmanship teaches them
to be humble in victory and resilient in defeat, fostering a positive attitude and a
strong sense of camaraderie. Leaders who embody these qualities can inspire others to
adopt them as well, creating a ripple effect that positively impacts the entire school
community. Moreover, leadership and sportsmanship help students develop essential
skills such as communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. These skills
are invaluable in various aspects of life, including academics, careers, and personal
relationships.
Sports have long been recognized as an essential component of a well-rounded
education, providing opportunities for physical fitness, teamwork, and personal
growth. However, the significance of sportsmanship and leadership development in
1
students often goes beyond these aspects. This research aims to explore the vital role
that sports can play in fostering the values of leadership and sportsmanship among
2
students, ultimately contributing to their overall character development and success in
various aspects of life. The concept of sportsmanship encompasses qualities such as
fairness, respect, and grace, both in victory and defeat. These values are crucial for
students to learn and internalize, as they not only impact their participation in sports
but also influence their interactions with peers, teachers, and the community.
Leadership, on the other hand, involves the ability to inspire, guide, and motivate
others towards a common goal. By developing these qualities in students, we can
empower them to become responsible, empathetic, and effective leaders in their
personal and professional lives.
The purpose of the research title "Sportsmanship: The Role of Developing the
Value of Leadership and Sportsmanship in Students" is to examine and understand the
significance of instilling leadership and sportsmanship values in students. The
objectives of this study may include: Investigating the impact of leadership and
sportsmanship training on students' personal development, character building, and
overall well-being. Identifying effective methods and strategies for incorporating
leadership and sportsmanship education into the existing educational curriculum.
Exploring the relationship between students' participation in sports and their ability to
develop leadership and sportsmanship skills. Assessing the influence of leadership
and sportsmanship on students' academic performance, social interactions, and future
career prospects. Comparing the effectiveness of various leadership and
sportsmanship development programs in different educational settings and contexts.

CHAPTER II
Literature review
Athletic activities that demand expertise or physical ability and may be
competitive in nature are known as sports. Examples of sports include racing,
baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, and so on. Sports
are one of the parts of human society that have been around for many years,
starting during the ancient times in 7000 BCE. One of the earliest examples of
sports is wrestling. Cave paintings dated back to 7000 BCE showed a wrestling
match surrounded by a crowd of people. In education, sports are often used to
give students proper physical exercise, as well as develop certain values that they
can use.
Leadership is referred to as the position or function of a leader, or
someone who guides or directs a group. Leadership skills are essential, not only
in sports but also in education. Having leadership skills can help students
achieve things like being a student council officer, a classroom officer, etc.
Leadership is generally a good skill for a student to learn at an early age, as this
is a skill that can be useful for them in the future. The power of being able to
lead a group is a skill that is needed in many careers, so schools need to instill
the values of leadership so that the students can grow up to become successful
people.
Sportsmanship is sportsmanlike conduct, such as fairness, courtesy, not
being a sore loser, etc. These behaviors are important for children to learn at a
5
young age as these can help them be kind and well-behaved. Sportsmanship may
be important for students who enjoy working with others. Practicing
6
sportsmanship can lead them to better collaborate with their peers and
form greater bonds.
The values of leadership and sportsmanship complement each other
perfectly. A competent leader must strive to exhibit fairness and impartiality
towards their peers, preventing the occurrence of prejudiced conduct or
favoritism. Together, these values form the foundation for developing
accomplished student leaders who possess the ability to effectively lead and
manage their groups.
Burgueño and Medina-Casaubon (2020) is a paper that aims to show the
influence of sports education on students. According to this paper, one of physical
education’s main goals is to enhance the moral and ethical skills of the students. This
paper successfully shows this through many thorough investigations and extensive
studies about the topic. The use of several statistics effectively provides strong
evidence for their claims.
According to Kapur (2019), leaders who possess the qualities of ethics and
morality and are able to establish effective communication can efficiently perform
their job responsibilities and achieve their desired objectives. This paper possesses a
few grammatical errors and lacks sufficient information for people who are willing to
probe deeper into this topic. However, it provides adequate information for those who
seek surface-level knowledge about leadership.
Sanchez, Hanrahan, and Concannon (2021) is a paper that seeks to examine
the influences of moral development programs on middle school students’
sportsmanship awareness. According to this paper, students who participated in sports
measured highest in their test for measured sportsmanship. This paper excellently
7
presents its evidence in such a way that proves every claim it makes.
Disregarding the grammatical errors, this paper successfully delivers its content to its
readers in an effective manner.

CHAPTER III
Methodology
Research Design
This quantitative research paper was written with a quasi-experimental
research design. We used a non-equivalent control group design for this study. A
posttest design was used with 3 groups.
Participants
In this study, 40 high school students (13 student council members, 12
classroom officers, and 15 regular students) were asked to participate. 62.5% of these
students have had experience as a student leader, while the remaining 37.5% have not
had any previous experience as a leader, excluding activities within the classroom.
The sampling method we used, the purposive sampling technique, allowed us to
analyze whether having any leadership skills influences students to become student
leaders.
Instrumentation
Each student was given a questionnaire, which contained 5 questions
regarding different skills essential to being a leader, such as how well they collaborate
with others, how well they interact with others, whether they consider themselves to
be a team player, how well they can manage or direct a group and how much they like
helping others. This survey consisted of 1 yes/no question and 4 questions wherein the
9
answers are numbers from 1 to 3. This survey lets us evaluate the leadership skills of
the students.
Data Collection
This study only consisted of one phase, where we introduced and delivered
our survey to the students. We asked all of the students one by one by approaching
them and asking them for permission to ask a few questions. We allowed them to take
as much time as they wanted to take the questions, and after the students answered,
we immediately recorded it into our database.
10
Findings
According to our findings, another essential component of sports psychology
is leadership. Strong leadership traits in athletes frequently translate into the capacity
to uplift and encourage their teammates. Team dynamics, cohesiveness, and
performance can be greatly impacted by leadership on the court or in the field.
The value of sportsmanship is that students' character and leadership
development are greatly aided by practicing good sportsmanship. Through the
development of virtues like self-control, discipline, teamwork, respect, integrity, and
resilience, athletics give students a platform to flourish on and off the field. Their
conduct, capacity for making decisions, and general outlook on life are shaped by
these ideals. Students learn vital life skills through sports that help them succeed
personally and make valuable contributions to society.
When you are the leader the strategy that you can use is to always operate with
honesty, fairness, and respect as a leader, and show these qualities in your choices and
actions. Promote open communication and establish an environment where people are
at ease discussing their ideas, opinions, and worries. This will foster respect for one
another and aid in understanding other points of view. Instruct leaders on the value of
sportsmanship and its advantages, emphasizing how it can improve team
dynamics and performance as a whole. Hold workshops or seminars to do this.
11
For our insight into team members, sportsmanship fosters a good and healthy
environment. Athletes who behave with justice, dignity, and grace set an example for
the team as a whole. It inspires teammates to stand by each other no matter how a
match or tournament turns out. Team members feel less stressed, more bonded, and
more a part of the group in this upbeat environment, building enduring relationships
among team members is mostly dependent on good sportsmanship. Athletes foster an
environment where everyone feels appreciated and respected when they act fairly,
respectfully, and gracefully. This encourages loyalty and a sense of belonging, which
can result in enduring relationships and friendships. These bonds may endure off the
sports field as former teammates help and inspire one another in many spheres of life
a vital example for upcoming athletes and the community at large. Athletes set an
example for others to follow when they play with fairness, grace, and respect.
Character development may be greatly impacted by this, as young athletes pick up
important life lessons by watching and copying the actions of their sports idols.
Athletes who demonstrate excellent sportsmanship may also experience a rise in self-
worth and personal development.

leadership skills can allow students to be able to have what is needed to become either
a student council member or a class officer.
15
Discussion
The goal of our study was to investigate how values contribute to students'
development of leadership and sportsmanship. Through an analysis of characteristics
including self-control, discipline, teamwork, integrity, respect, and resilience, this
study aimed to emphasize the significance of sportsmanship in developing students'
character and leadership skills. The first important conclusion of this study is the
substantial impact of respect on student-athlete behavior. The findings of this research
provide light on the good influence of sportsmanship principles in numerous aspects
of students' lives, both within and outside the sphere of sports. As one of the
fundamental principles of sportsmanship, respect is essential to encouraging fair play,
pleasant interactions, and healthy competition. When pupils treat themselves, their
opponents, coaches, referees, and teammates with respect in actual games, they foster
an atmosphere that encourages sportsmanship. Being respectful to others fosters
understanding, collaboration, and teamwork, which improves everyone's entire sports
experience. As a result, encouraging respect in athletics helps kids grow in their
ability to lead and practice good sportsmanship.
One key value linked to sportsmanship was found to be teamwork. Students discover
the value of cooperation, communication, and support from one another in
accomplishing shared objectives through teamwork. They are aware that a team's
combined efforts are frequently necessary for an individual to succeed. Students who
actively participate in team sports acquire
16
17
critical leadership abilities like decision-making, effective communication,
and problem-solving. Sports promote inclusivity, unity, and shared responsibility by
allowing kids to comprehend and value the variety of skills and abilities of their
teammates. Consequently, encouraging teamwork in athletics helps children build
leadership and good sportsmanship.
The results of the study offer helpful details about the significance of values in
helping kids develop leadership and good sportsmanship. Educators, coaches, and
stakeholders can support students' holistic development by actively implementing and
encouraging values like respect, honesty, teamwork, resilience, discipline, and self-
control within the sporting environment. Putting into practice tactics that promote
values-based sportsmanship—like incorporating values education into coaching
techniques and athletic programs—can teach children the skills they need to
overcome obstacles, grow into capable leaders, and positively impact society.
In short, this study emphasizes how important values are in helping students
become leaders and establish good sportsmanship. The results highlight the beneficial
effects of virtues including self-control, discipline, teamwork, integrity, respect, and
resilience on students' conduct, character, and way of life in general. Education
professionals, coaches, and other stakeholders can support students' holistic
development and provide them with the tools they need to become responsible,
respectful, resilient, and successful leaders on and off the field by actively
implementing and promoting these values in the athletic environment.
18
Implication
Implication This research has a number of practical implications for educators,
coaches, parents as well as policymakers involved in the development of students.
The first and most significant is that of the importance of values education in sports
programs and curriculums. Therefore, teachers as well as trainers should prioritize
imparting and reinforcing such values as respect, honesty, teamwork, resilience, self-
discipline, and control as they teach technical sports skills to their learners. By
explicitly teaching these values to children can have a strong basis in morality on
which they will base their ethical decisions in life both within school settings and
outside. Furthermore, the research points out that stakeholders need to work together
closely. This includes schools; sporting organizations, coaches, and even parents who
need to come up with an environment whereby students feel supported and nurtured.
To ensure that such characteristics are instilled in all students it is necessary for there
to be regular communication among all stakeholders who are also supposed to
cooperate so that students receive decent messages pertaining to good sportsmanship.
As a result of working together towards this goal, the above-mentioned parties have
an opportunity to create a whole holistic program focusing on character building
through leading theory. The sports experiences of students are greatly shaped by
coaches. The study also points out the significance of training and supporting coaches
in ethics coaching techniques. To be able to effectively pass on the values of good
sportsmanship to their players, it is necessary that they are equipped with adequate
knowledge and skills. Some of these include; professional development opportunities,
mentorship programs, and ongoing training among other methods that can help in
creating a positive and value-driven sporting environment. The other implication is
that sportsmanship and leadership skills can be applied outside sports as well. As such
19
policymakers as well as educational institutions can use this information to
develop strategies aimed at bridging the gap between sports and academic
performance. By emphasizing the connections between leadership skills developed
through sports and success in academics, career, and personal life, students can be
motivated to actively participate in sports programs leading to overall holistic
development. Additionally the research, also, reveals the need to celebrate as well as
recognize situations that show sportsmanship and leadership amongst students.
Schools, sports organizations, and communities should develop methods for
recognizing and rewarding people who exhibit outstanding sportsmanship or
leadership traits. The significance of this recognition is not just about inculcating
positive behaviors only but also setting a role model to other learners by creating an
atmosphere of good virtues like being sportingly minded and leading others. Lastly,
based on these results, this study implies that values education must be included;
stakeholders have to cooperate; coaches must be supported; student achievements
must be recognized; and it should be realized that sportsmanship and leadership skills
are transferable. By implementing such implications, educators, parents, coaches as
well as policymakers can contribute towards nurturing holistic students thereby
breeding a generation that has acquired both attributes of sporting spirit while
imparting qualities necessary for success in games and life at large.
20
Recommendation
Several recommendations can be made from our study findings on how to
foster leadership and sportsmanship among students. First, the education system and
sports organizations must prioritize values-based programs in sports. By including
values education in sports curriculum, children can learn about and practice such
values as respect, honesty, teamwork, resilience, discipline, and self-control.
Secondly, stakeholder cooperation and communication is necessary. These values
need to be emphasized by coaches and educators who should constantly remind them
through team meetings, training sessions, or competitions. Educators working
together with coaches and parents will create a conducive environment for the growth
of leadership skills and sportsmanship among students. Three, coaches shape how
pupils view sports in important ways. This calls for the provision of support services
to coaches that train them in values-based coaching methods emphasizing character
development alongside technical development. Coaches have a role they play as
examples for their athletes when it comes to matters relating to good behavior such as
sportsmanship during games thus interacting with them becomes vital. They should
also provide student-athletes with opportunities where they can get guidance toward
becoming leaders. Leadership development is a worthwhile investment because it can
enable students to become better team leaders in both academic and non-academic
environments, inspire others as well as themselves, and make ethical choices. Finally,
we must recognize and celebrate student leadership or sportsmanship. There should be
an acknowledgment of good deeds performed by leaders in the form of rewards which
will not only serve as appreciation but also encourage other learners. Schools and
sports organizations can create recognition programs, awards, or ceremonies to
21
identify and honor individuals with outstanding sportsmanship and leadership
abilities. Lastly, values-based sports programs must be instituted, promote
collaboration among stakeholders, offer training and support to coaches, introduce
leadership development programs as well as institute programs for acknowledging
and rewarding good behavior so that students can develop good sportsmanship habits
and leadership skills. These suggestions are practical ways through which institutions
of learning together with sporting organizations can create an environment where all
around individuals can flourish into great leaders for tomorrow helping them succeed
both on the field and off it.
22
CHAPTER V
Conclusion
To sum up, the study done about values that help build sportsmanship and
leadership in students showed that nothing helps develop skills of leading better than
participating in games. What they repeatedly found was taking part in different
sports gives learners many chances to practice being leaders. As we went through
this investigation, we observed that respect, honesty, unity, integrity, self-control,
resilience, and hard work are some of the values that are important in building good
sportsmanship and leadership among learners. Once people uphold these values at all
times; they shape their character development process as well as decision-making
skills which affect how they handle things generally including those outside the
playing arena.
This research also discovered something quite interesting – there is a
relationship between involvement in games and gaining leadership abilities. 62.5%
of students involved in various sporting activities confessed to having taken up
positions where they had to lead others within their teams. Working together with
teammates in any given sport presents an opportunity for individuals to acquire skills
like effective communication or problem solving among others necessary for
becoming a good leader. Not only does it improve one’s capability while on the pitch
but can also be transferred into other aspects such as school work success; relating
with friends better or even being successful in future careers.
Moreover, the investigation revealed that games offer a unique setting for
learners to gain knowledge and exercise leadership abilities in real-life scenarios.
Sports being competitive in nature necessitates snap judgments, taking charge, and
23
directing teammates towards shared targets. Such exposure to situations where
one can lead is said to nurture self-confidence, perseverance as well as adaptability
which are core qualities for effective leaders.
Nevertheless, 37.5% of students do not perceive or encounter leadership equally.
Factors like character, personal strengths, team spirit, and coaching methods may
affect how much a student gets involved in taking up leadership roles within their
teams. Nevertheless, all studies concur on one point: sports create fertile soil upon
which scholars can discover themselves better as leaders.
In summary, research findings back up claims that values of sportsmanship
plus experiences gained through games have a great impact on student development
concerning leadership skills. Educators ought therefore to ensure that respect,
honesty, unity resilience discipline patience, etc. are promoted actively during
sporting events or incorporated into coaching techniques used with young people;
this way their potential will be maximized.
To further the development of leadership in sport, future research should
consider specific mechanisms. Studies that follow people over time might offer
insights into how long-lasting sports are on leading abilities and their applicability to
different life areas. Similarly, it would be worthwhile to explore various coaching
methods or interventions for fostering leadership qualities among student-athletes.
In general, research shows that students can gain many opportunities to learn about
and grow into leaders through sports participation. If this potential were more fully
realized by those involved with athletics – teachers; coaches; etcetera – they could
help nurture effective community-oriented leaders who will make positive changes in
society as a whole.
