INTRODUCTION
Garbage disposal methods in Lusaka District, like in many other
areas, have had a significant impact on the environment over the
years. The history of waste management in the region dates back
to the colonial era when the focus was mainly on collection and
disposal without consideration for environmental consequences.
However, as the population has grown and urbanization has
increased, the need for more sustainable and environmentally
friendly waste management practices has become apparent.
AIMS
To evaluate peoples attitude Garbage disposal methods in
Lusaka District.
OBJECTIVE
The main objectives for this file project were as follows:
1. To find out the specific areas where waste is dumped in Lusaka.
2. To find out and analyze the cause of waste disposal.
3. To find out the type of waste disposal if it is domestic or
industrial.
DEDICATION AND DECLARATION
I dedicate this research project to the ministry of
Education and its content and to the Lusaka city council
(LCC) being that there are the main source who educate
and train individuals about the importance of recycling of
waste plastics for the betterment and development of our
country and the world at large.
METHODOLOGY
In this research report I used the primary source where I want in
the field compound and gather information from the residents
from there, of which I used a camera to capture in garbage site,
Note book to record some important information, a pen for
writing and phone for shooting some short videos for me to
remember when i reached home.
DATA PRESENTANTION
Having carried out the research in Lusaka dumping site, it was
discovered that the type of waste been dumped is domestic such
as bottle, plastics foil, expired food and containers. One of the
key figures in the field of waste management in Lusaka District
is the Lusaka City Council. The council is responsible for
managing waste collection and disposal in the city, and over the
years, it has implemented various initiatives to improve waste
management practices. One of the main methods used by the
council is open dumping in designated landfills, which has been
a common practice for many years. However, this method has
had detrimental effects on the environment, as it can lead to
pollution of soil, water, and air.
Another influential individual in the field of waste management
in Lusaka District is Dr. Mulenga Kapwepwe, an environmental
activist who has been advocating for more sustainable waste
management practices in the region. Dr. Kapwepwe has been
instrumental in raising awareness about the environmental
consequences of improper waste disposal and has encouraged
the adoption of more environmentally friendly methods such as
recycling and composting. The impact of current waste disposal
methods on the environment in Lusaka District is concerning.
Open dumping in landfills can lead to the accumulation of
harmful chemicals in the soil and water, which can have long-
lasting effects on the ecosystem. In addition, burning of waste
can release harmful gases into the atmosphere, contributing to
air pollution and climate change. These effects not only harm
the environment but also pose risks to human health.Despite
these negative consequences, there are also positive aspects to
consider. The adoption of more sustainable waste management
practices, such as recycling and composting, can help reduce the
amount of waste that ends up in landfills and minimize
environmental damage. These practices also have the potential
to create economic opportunities, such as recycling programs
that generate income for communities.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the field of waste management in Lusaka District
is facing significant challenges in terms of the impact of current
disposal methods on the environment. However, there are
opportunities for improvement through the adoption of more
sustainable practices and the efforts of individuals like Dr.
Mulenga Kapwepwe who are advocating for change. By
working together to address these challenges, we can create a
more sustainable future for waste management in Lusaka
District and beyond.
PROBLEM AND LIMITATIONS
During the research of the project,
o They were a lot of mosquitoes during the night that it
disturbed us from sleeping.
o load shading was another challenge
o Poor transport management.
o Insufficient information due to violation of scavengers.
o Some of the areas at the dumping were impossible
especially were they uncrushed waste it was difficult for us
to acquire the necessary information.
RECOMMENDATION
From the discoveries it could be said that a lot of things have to
be done especially by the government and also could require
wiping out problems.
The following are the recommendations.
1. There is need for government to inject some more funds in the
organization.
2. There is need to bring up security check up the workers.
3. The Lusaka city council needs to conduct meetings so to
survey previous problems and current in this way the council
will be aware of what people wants and needs.
4. The government should encourage people to join community
work by themselves.
5. Programs and measures made by the Lusaka city council must
be taken in much consideration by the government.
However, people are responsible for providing the necessary
information should make sure that everyone is providing with
that information.
