2D Shapes

Quadrilaterals
Learning Objective:

• Identify, describe, classify and sketch quadrilaterals,

including reference to angles, symmetrical properties,
parallel sides and diagonals.
Quadrilaterals

A quadrilateral is a shape that has 4 sides.

Vocabularies

Quadrilateral = any shape with four sides

Parallel = lines that are always the same distance apart
Bisect = divide into two equal parts.
Diagonal = lines connecting two opposite vertices.
Trapezia = plural form of trapezium

Diagonal lines
bisect the
parallelogram
into 2 parts
equally.
Properties of quadrilaterals.
1. Parallel sides

a. An isosceles trapezium has 1 pair of parallel sides.

b. A kite has no pairs of parallel sides.
c. A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides.
d. A rectangle has 2 pairs of parallel sides.
e. A rhombus has 2 pairs of parallel sides.
f. A square has 2 pairs of parallel sides.
g. A trapezium has 1 pair of parallel sides.
Properties of quadrilaterals.
2. Equal sides

a. An isosceles trapezium has 1 pair of equal sides.

b. A kite has 2 pairs of equal sides.
c. A parallelogram has 2 pairs of equal sides.
d. A rectangle has 2 pairs of equal sides.
e. A trapezium has no pairs of equal sides.
f. A square and a rhombus have 4 equal sides.
Properties of quadrilaterals.
Equal angles
3. Angles
Equal angles

a. An isosceles trapezium has 2 pairs of equal angles.

b. A kite has 1 pair of equal angles.
c. A parallelogram has 2 pairs of equal angles. The opposite angles are equal.
d. A rectangle and a square have 4 equal angles. Each of the angle measures 90o.
e. A trapezium has no pairs of equal angles.
f. A rhombus have 2 pairs of equal angles (not 90o)

7. This shape has four equal sides and all angles are 90 °. The diagonals bisect each
other. What is it?
8. This shape has two pairs of equal, parallel sides and all angles are 90 °. The
diagonals bisect each other. What is it?
9. This shape has two pairs of equal, parallel sides. It has two pairs of equal angles
(not 90 °). What is it?
10. This shape has two parallel sides. The length of the sides is not necessarily equal.
What is it?
