CHAPTER 1
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL

The purpose of an internship is to provide real-world experience that enables you to

put everything you’ve learned into action. An internship can help you gain skills that can
be applied to future jobs. My internship lasted one month from 09/01/2024 to 24/04/2024.
The internship program is designed to provide students engaged in a field
experience with an opportunity to share our insights, to explore the links between students'
academic
preparation and our field work, and to assist participants in developing and carrying out
the major research project which will serve to culminate their internship experience.
As part of the internship experience, we are expected to take an active role in finding
an appropriate internship for ourselves. Many of us pursue our own contacts; however,
information is available on Locating Internship Sites.
Generally, an internship consists of an exchange of services for experience between
the student and an organization. Students can also use an internship to determine if they have
an interest in a particular career, create a network of contacts or gain school credit. Some
interns find permanent, paid employment with the organizations for which they worked. This
can be a significant benefit to the employer as experienced interns often need little or no
training when they begin regular employment.
Unlike a trainee program, employment at the completion of an internship is not guaranteed.

CHAPTER 6
DESIGN METHOD

For flexible pavements, structural design is mainly concerned with determining

appropriate layer thickness and composition. The main design factors are stresses due to
traffic load and temperature variations. Two methods of flexible pavement structural design
are common today: Empirical design and mechanistic empirical design.

Empirical design

An empirical approach is one which is based on the results of experimentation or experience.

Some of them are either based on physical properties or strength parameters of soil
subgrade. An empirical approach is one which is based on the results of experimentation or
experience. An empirical analysis of flexible pavement design can be done with or with out
a soil strength test. An example of design without soil strength test is by using HRB soil
classification system, in which soils are grouped from A-1 to A-7 and a group index is
added to differentiate soils within each group. Example with soil strength test uses McLeod,
Stabilimeter, California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test. CBR test is widely known and will be
discussed.

29| P a g e
INTERNSHIP 2023

CHAPTER 7
CONSTRUCTION
Tasks follows:
1. Site Clearance
2. Drainage Construction
3. Sub Grade
4. Wet mix Macadam
5. Dence Bitumen Macadam(DBM)
6. Sil coat

1. SITE CLEARANCE

 Removal of structures: Demolition or dismantling of existing buildings,

infrastructure, or other man-made structures on the site.
 Vegetation removal: Clearing trees, shrubs, grass, and other vegetation to
make way for construction activities.
 Environmental considerations: Ensuring compliance with environmental
regulations and minimizing impact on surrounding ecosystems during the
clearance process.
 Grading and leveling: Leveling the ground surface to create a uniform and
stable base for construction.

30| P a g e
INTERNSHIP 2023

2. DRAINAGE CONSTRUCTION

 Drainage construction procedure

The Removal of rain water and waste water from surface of the road throw
the Drainage system
 Excavation
Excavation of earth more than 1m depth and 1m width from ground level was
carried out. This can be done by labour-based technology or machine-intensive
application. Utilization of machines/equipment like excavators or backhoes can
increase the work rate productivity and accuracy

 Compaction

The formation bed of the drainage structure needs to be leveled and compacted properly
to the required relative degree of compaction. This can be to 90 -95% Maximum Dry
Density as per AASHTO or the selected specification standard in
use. Common equipment like jumper compactor and hand rollers can be used in areas
with little working space. For heavy work with enough working space, a vibrating roller
and water bowser can be deployed too.

 Pouring PCC

Upon bed levelling and compaction, PCC is done to remove irregularities and offer a
good bed for the placement of concrete while minimizing differential settlement. The
PCC 100mm thickness of M15 grade concrete was laid

31| P a g e
INTERNSHIP 2023

Reinforcement must be fixed in the correct position and care must be taken to keep it in
the correct position while concrete is being placed and compacted. A U- shaped main
bars of 10mm at 250mm c/c & 8mm dia distribution bar @ 300mm c/c was laid.

 Form work
Formwork retains concrete until it has set and produces the desired shapes and
sometimes, desired surface finishes. Formwork must be supported on false work
of adequate strength and sufficient rigidity to keep deflections within acceptable
limits. The forms too must be strong and rigid to meet dimensional tolerances.

 Concreting
After completing the form work, the next activity will be the casting. M20
grade concrete was used for raft and wall structure. The concrete should have
good workability so that it is easy to place and compact with the available
equipment. It should also fulfil the requirements for strength and durability. The
weep holes are provided on the wall for the drainage purpose.
After concreting, leave the drain for one day to set then remove the shuttering.
The drain was cured to achieve the full strength.

32| P a g e
INTERNSHIP 2023

3. SUBGRADE

 Subgrade is the bottom most layer which is nothing but natural soil layer compacted
up to required depth generally about 150 to 300 mm to receive the loads coming from
top layers. This layer is termed as foundation for the pavement system

 In our site as per the IS standard we have divided into 3 layers. 1 st layer of 200mm ,
2nd layer of 150mm and 3rd layer of 150mm

 All the layers are compacted by road roller and spreeding the water..

4.WET MIX MACADAM

 Wet Mix Macadam(WMM) work includes laying and compacting clean, crushed,
graded aggregate and granular material premixed with water to a dense mass on a
prepared GSB layer or existing pavement as per the requirement of the project

 WMM can be laid in one or more layers, but the thickness of the single compacted
layer is not less than 75mm, and the maximum of 200mm when vibrating or other
approved types of compacting equipment are used

 work includes laying and compacting clean, crushed, graded aggregate and granular
material premixed with water to a dense mass on a prepared GSB layer or existing
pavement as per the requirement of the project

33| P a g e
INTERNSHIP 2023

5. DENCE BITUMEN MACADUM(DBM)

 Composition: Dense Bitumen Macadam is a type of road surface layer made up of

 a mixture of aggregates (such as crushed stone or gravel) bound together with bitumen as
a binder.

 Thickness: It is typically applied in layers ranging from 25 to 100 mm in thickness,

depending on the specific requirements of the road and the expected traffic loads.

 Bitumen content: The bitumen binder content in DBM is sufficient to ensure adequate
adhesion and cohesion between the aggregate particles, enhancing the stability and
waterproofing of the road surface.

 Surface texture: Dense Bitumen Macadam typically provides a smooth and durable
surface suitable for high-traffic roads, offering good skid resistance and water drainage
properties.

 Application: DBM is commonly used as a base or binder course in road construction,

providing a stable foundation for subsequent layers such as Asphalt Concrete or Stone
Mastic Asphalt.

6.SIL COAT

 Material: Sil Coat is typically made from a blend of silicate-based compounds, acrylic
resins, and other additives.
 Properties: Sil Coat offers excellent weather resistance, UV protection, and durability,
helping to prolong the life of the underlying substrate.
 Finish options: It is available in various finishes, including smooth, textured, and
decorative options, allowing for customization based on aesthetic preferences.
 Application: Sil Coat is typically applied using brushes, rollers, or sprayers, and it can be
used on both.

CHAPTER 8
SPECIFIC OUTCOMES FROM INTERSHIP

Internship is a bridge between the theoretical knowledge and the practical or reality
work at the field of construction in the civil engineering work. We all who take the
internship program go to companies that already working either as a consultant or a
contractor. The
responsibilities of hosting company are to teach students and shape them in the four weeks
duration as real site workers.

The main purposes of this internship are:-

 The knowledge gained through experiential learning from internships in

construction constitutes significant and uniquely valuable preparation for the
requirements of their future professional practice in that field.
 Much of the learning which is gained during this internship cannot be attained
Sin any other way.

 A valuable outcome of construction internship is “learning how to learn” a

situation which deserves appreciation by engineering educator

35| P a g e
INTERNSHIP 2023

CHAPTER 9
CONCLUSION

As an undergraduate of the DTE Board, we would like to say that this training program is an
excellent opportunity for us to get to the ground level and experience the things that we
would have never gained through going straight into a job. We are grateful to the DTE
Board, Potential Consulting Services and DM Construction for giving us this wonderful
opportunity.
The main objective of this training is to provide an opportunity to students to identify,
observe and practice how engineering is applicable in the real industry. It is not only
to get experience on technical practices but also to observe management practices and
to interact with on field workers. It is easy to work with sophisticated machines, but
not with people. The only chance that an undergraduate has to have this experience is
the internship training period. We feel we got the maximum out of that experience.
Also, we learnt way of work in an organization. The importance of being punctual,
the importance of maximum commitment and the importance of team spirit. The
training program having these destinations was more useful than staying one place
throughout the month. In our opinion, we have gained lot of knowledge and
experience needed to be successful in a great engineering challenge, as in my opinion,
engineering is after all a challenge and not a job.
