Sense and Sensibility
(1811)
Why was the novel published anonymously?
This was the first of Jane Austen’s novels to be published. Like most of her works,
↓ Sense and Sensibility, it had been written much earlier than when it came out and originally it had been
Edward and Elinor,
illustration by composed as an epistolary novel. A first draft had been completed in 1795, under the
C. E. Brock, 1898. title Elinor and Marianne. Despite many tries, some by Austen’s own father, it wasn’t
until 1811 that Thomas Egerton agreed to publish the final draft of the novel, now
titled Sense and Sensibility, but with Austen’s final guarantee against any eventual
loss. It was published anonymously ‘by a lady’ but it won favourable notice.
How does the novel combine plot and characters?
As usual in Jane Austen’s works, the plot of the novel is relatively
simple. Not much happens; it is rather an investigation of the
different attitudes to life of two sisters. Elinor is calm and full of
common ‘sense’, while Marianne is sentimental and has little control over
her emotions – hers is the ‘sensibility’ of the title. Here for the first time
English readers had a great example of Austen’s ability to describe real
and lively characters, and of her fine psychological insight in portraying
family and love relations among the English landed gentry.
Sense and Sensibility is an entertaining novel in which Austen’s gift for
characterization through dialogue rather than action is first expressed.
Despite its modern and lively dialogue, Austen’s novel betrays its
epistolary origin (and the age’s predilection for stories told in letters)
in putting letters at central junctions in the story (→ p. 346).
THE STORY
When Henry Dashwood dies, all his property goes to his son John, who leaves his stepmother
and his three stepsisters – Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret – with barely enough money to
support themselves. The women retire to Devonshire and Elinor has to leave Edward Ferrars, the
man she loves. Marianne falls in love with John Willoughby, a brilliant and fascinating young man
with little money and not many principles. She consequently suffers misery and pain for letting
herself be carried away by emotional excesses. Elinor, on the other hand, finds that her patience
and rational behaviour are finally rewarded since, after many vicissitudes, Edward Ferrars marries
her. In the end Marianne too finds her happiness by marrying Colonel Brandon, a rich neighbour
who has always been in love with her.
