I couldn't believe my eyes.
The white floor tiles gleamed and the
counters practically sparkled. The bottom of the sink was not only
visible but shiny. My kids had cleaned up after themselves.
1. I reached my hand into the dry, crunchy brush at the edge of
the field, really hoping to just find the lost frisbee and
nothing else. I bit down hard on my tongue when my hand ran
over something smooth and scaly. I felt my heart thump
against my rib cage, and I tried not to make any sudden
movements.
2. The old red brick building rose on the horizon, staring at me
with its too-small windows and fluorescent lighting. I did not
want to go back to school.
3. Before I knew what was happening, I was in the air, confused
by the sensation of air rushing under me. My bike landed
first, and then I felt heat explode from my shoulder as I hit
the ground.
4. It was too blue, the sky. It didn't match the gray mood I
was in with its cheerful, puffy white clouds and soaring birds.
I was unamused.

time before the house fell silent.

16. The sand was hot and grainy like my morning grits.
