Alternate Routing

Alternative routing is a method for ensuring network connectivity through backup mediums. The document describes a university's network setup with both main and backup fiber optic cables for last-mile circuit protection, as well as a long-haul network diversity strategy that switches from a leased line to an ADSL/internet connection during outages. This approach helps organizations maintain secure access and minimize business loss due to connectivity issues.

Alternative Routing

The method of routing information via an alternate medium is called alternative routing

Last-mile circuit protection

Consider a University’s network setup as shown in below, University’s administration block is 300 mtrs apart from
university. Here two building are connected through main Fiber optic cable & here you can see a backup fiber
optic cable for alternate solution. In this case when ever the main connection fail it automatically connected
through backup fiber optic cable.

Long-haul network diversity

In order to safeguard against network connectivity outage, which entails business loss, organizations must ensure
that they have alternative cost-effective connectivity options that provide secure access. Below picture shows the
Branch office to Head office connectivity, here active connection is through leased line via main router. When ever
the leased line fails, automatically connection failover to ADSL/internet connection. Then whenever the leased line
is back to normal, connection will automatically back to leased line.
