CHAPTER 1
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
INTRODUCTION:
1
Marketing can be defined as activities undertaken by a business
establishment or an individual to promote their services and products. Marketing includes
promotion, advertisement and selling products and services to the consumers.
Marketing is a dynamic and strategic discipline that encompasses various activities aimed at
creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers,
clients, partners, and society at large. It is a fundamental function within businesses and
organizations, serving as a vital link between them and their target markets.
The primary goal of marketing is to identify and satisfy customer needs and wants profitably
by considering 4P’s (PRODUCT, PRICE, PLACE, PROMOTION). It involves understanding
customer behaviour, market trends, and competitors to develop effective strategies that drive
customer engagement, brand awareness, and ultimately, sales and revenue growth.
In essence, marketing revolves around the concept of creating value for customers. It involves
researching and analyzing market segments, determining customer preferences, and
developing products or services that meet those needs. Furthermore, marketing involves
crafting compelling messaging and communication strategies to effectively reach and engage
target audiences through various channels, including advertising, public relations, digital
marketing, and social media.
In addition to customer-centric activities, marketing also plays a crucial role in building and
managing brand equity. It involves developing a strong brand identity, positioning the brand
effectively in the market, and maintaining a positive brand image through consistent
messaging and experiences.
Overall, marketing is a multifaceted discipline that combines creativity, analysis, and strategic
thinking. Its purpose is to drive business growth, build strong customer relationships, and
create value for both the organization and its target audience. By understanding customer
needs, identifying market opportunities, and leveraging effective marketing strategies,
companies can position themselves for success in a competitive marketplace.
Marketing Mix:
2
The marketing mix refers to the set of actions, or tactics, that a company uses to promote its brand or
product in the market. The 4Ps make up a typical marketing mix - Price, Product, Promotion and
Place. However, nowadays, the marketing mix increasingly includes several other Ps like Packaging,
Positioning, People and even Politics as vital mix elements.
It is the process of planning, organising, and controlling the activities of a company's sales
force and distribution network. The main goal of SDM is to ensure that the company's
products and services are available to customers when and where they need them
3
The purpose of this study is to analyze the marketing strategies of the food processing
industry and to propose a marketing project for my degree internship. The food processing
industry is one of the most competitive and dynamic sectors in the global economy, facing
challenges such as environmental regulations, consumer preferences, technological
innovations, and market saturation. Therefore, it is essential for the food processing
companies to adopt effective marketing strategies that can enhance their brand image,
customer loyalty, and profitability. The study will review the literature on the marketing
theories and practices of the food processing industry, and conduct a case study of a leading
food processing company in the market. The study will also identify the gaps and
opportunities in the current marketing strategies of the company, and suggest a marketing
project that can address them.
The marketing project will be based on the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable,
Relevant, and Time-bound) framework, and will include the objectives, target market,
positioning, marketing mix, budget, and evaluation methods. The study will contribute to the
academic knowledge of marketing in the food processing industry, and provide practical
recommendations for my degree internship.
Overall, the study of marketing provides businesses with the tools and knowledge to
effectively connect with their customers, drive growth, and achieve long-term success in the
dynamic business landscape.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
6
The food processing industry produces several food products such as meat,
poultry, fisheries, fruits, vegetables, spices, milk and milk products, alcoholic beverages,
plantations and grains. It also manufactures cocoa products and chocolates, confectionery,
mineral water, soya-based items and high-protein foods.
The food processing sector in India is a significant industry that transforms raw agricultural
produce into processed food. It encompasses activities such as cleaning, grading, packaging,
preservation, and value addition. The sector is diverse, covering various food products like
fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, fisheries, grains, beverages, snacks, and packaged foods. It is a
major source of employment, especially in rural areas, and contributes to the empowerment
of women. Food processing adds value to agricultural commodities, extends their shelf life,
and enhances their nutritional value. The sector requires adequate infrastructure and
technology, and the Indian government has taken initiatives to promote its growth. India also
exports processed food products, benefiting from its competitive advantages. However, the
sector faces challenges like inadequate infrastructure, fragmented supply chains, and low
technology adoption. Overcoming these challenges is crucial for the sector's sustained growth
and competitiveness.
The India food processing market size reached INR 25,455Billion in 2022. Looking forward,
IMARC Group expects the market to reach INR 45,345Billion by 2028, exhibiting a growth
rate (CAGR) of 9.5% during 2023-2028.
India is the world's second largest producer of fruits & vegetables after China but hardly 2%
of the produce is processed. In spite of a large production base, the level of processing is low
(less than 10%). Approximately 2% of fruits and vegetables, 8% marine, 35% milk, 6%
poultry are processed
7
The internship took place in the Food processing Sector, which encompasses
in processing CASHEW. I was affiliated with SIVA RAMA AGRO PRODUCTS,

PRODUCTION INFORMATION:
13
Cutting Borma
Drying Boiling Cooling & Cooling Peeling Grading
Shelling Drying
STEP 1: DRYING
• The cashew nuts are exposed to sun for 2days. They keep them under sunlight till they
get dried. This process reduces moisture and oil content present in the cashew nuts.
• The sunlight changes the colour of the cashew nut to brown. The change in colour
indicates whether the cashew is dried or not.
• The dried cashew nuts are filled into bags and stored in warehouse.
STEP 2: BOILING
• In this step the cashew nuts kept into large steamers which leads to roasting of cashew
nuts, the process is called steam roasting. And uses firewood under the steamers to
generate stream.
• This roasting process is carried out for 20minutes at 90 Degree Celsius.
STEP 3: COOLING
• The roasted raw nuts are transferred to a separate room and spread them evenly on
the dry floor.
• Here they are kept for two to three days so that they are cooled.
STEP 4: CUTTING
• There are cutting machines which runs with no electricity and which runs on
electricity.
The one which don’t require electricity is the traditional way of cutting cashew nuts.
• The traditional machine is handled by 2 workers. These nuts are kept under the cutting
machine so that the other worker can operate to cut the cashew and separate the
cashew kernel from the shell.
14
• The modern cutting machines cuts the cashew nut automatically once the cashew nuts
are poured into the machine. It is the fastest way to cut the cashew but traditional way
of cutting is more effective than modern way.
• The cutting process I handled by women workers only. Each worker works on cutting
around 8 to 10kg per day using traditional machines.
SHELLING
• Cashew nut splits and gets open in the middle and the cashew has to taken out from
the shell immediately using bare hands.
• Shelling is a technique that can easily learnt and not required any strength to break the
shall. Correct positioning of the nut and ability to hit the nut in the correct position.
• Quality control and inspection is required to ensure that shelling process produce
highest quality of cashew kernel.
• Workers use castrol oil in order to keep their hands safe.
• The cashew nuts which are separated from the shells are shifted to a hot chamber for
BORMA DRYING.
• BORMA looks like a rectangular box chamber consisting 8 stands. Each stand
consists 60 aluminium trays. And each tray is loaded with 4kg of cashew kernel (total
1920kg in a box). And door is closed and locked for 8hours which generates 81
degree Celsius heat inside the Borma box.
• After completion of Borma drying for 8hours the doors of the box are opened for
1hour and those trays are shifted to cooling room.
• This cooling room consists of huge fans to draw the heat inside and a steamer which
sprays water in the form of spray. So that peel on the cashew can be dried. This
process is done for whole day
• The majority of the employees will be working in this process. Here the workers remove
the husk from the cashew nuts with the help of small knife. Every worker peel 10 to
12kg of cashew on average in a day.
15
STEP 7: GRADING PROCESS
• This is the process where cashew nuts are categorized and they are given different
grades. Depending on grades the prices are to be set.
• In this process the kernel is passed through a grading machine where the dust is
removed.
• Once the cleaning process is completed these nuts are passed through a metal
detector, this removes unwanted particals and separates cashew into different grades.
After this process they weigh cashew and packs it.
TREATMENT
• About 150 cashew units in and around palasa were closed as they are burning them
instead of boiling using steam which caused a lot of air pollution.
• But now the process has been changed to boiling. Which requires a large quantity of
water to produce steam.
• The total water consumption is 4KLD (Kilo litres/day) of river water or ground
water.
Out of 4KLD, 2KLD is used for Boiling process and other 2KLD is domestic purpose.
• The total production produces 1KLD of effluent (As domestic sewage) and it is
treated by Septic Tank-Soak Pit system. And the treated effluent is used for irrigation
and sewage in farming in green belt. And most of the industries have 70% of their
area allotted to Green Belts.
Production Waste Management:
• A typical cashew unit uses around 3200kg of raw cashew nut per day. And the raw
material (3200kg cashew nut) produces 800kg of cashew kernel in a day as a final
product.
• The solid waste is 2400kg of cashew shell is produced in a day and it is sold to OIL
EXPELLER UNITS.
• The husk (RED SKIN) after peeling the cashew kernel is sold to hen farms, Tea
Making units, Tobacco makers for 30-100INR per kg based on the market rate and
demand.
The qualities are given based on weight. (Highest quality= less kernel, More weight) and
reverse for low quality. It is separated by grading machine
