Final Capstone Project Reflection Questions

1. In the process of completing your Capstone Project, what did you learn about your subject? What did
you learn about your skill set? What did you learn about yourself?
My capstone project subject was filming and having a YouTube channel all about what I was learning, the
guitar. This subject has always been something I’ve been interested in, being a content creator seemed fun
and when I decided to do it for my capstone – I learned many things. One of the aspects of my subject was
filming, it was hard. I didn’t particularly like doing it, so many retakes and bloopers took up storage on my
phone. One time, I spent so much time redoing one clip that the Sun went down drastically. The lighting in
my room changed so I had to film the next day or else it would be too dark to film.
The skill sets I used weren’t all completely new not to mention. I edited and filmed videos for class projects,
I had to time manage my schedule for assignments. However, since this project took significantly more time
than past experiences, the skills I mentioned improved due to what the project required.
I learned many things about myself, from the things I enjoyed to how I overcame problems. To start, I
enjoyed the post-production part, editing and looking over clips, rather than filming. Another thing to
mention. I have always known that I procrastinate severely, it happened with this project as well. One thing
I discovered though is that if I write down my schedule and keep up with my online calendar, I can avoid
procrastination because I can see the low number of days I have to finish everything.

2. How is your project relevant to you? How is it relevant to the school? How is it relevant to the
community?
This project is relevant to me because I am a singer, and I would like to be able to sing and play an
instrument – so, it would be great if I could do it. So, then I combined my interest in the guitar and making
videos. The relevance of my project pertaining to the school body depends on whether they see my
YouTube videos; however, many students in our school may be interested in the acoustic guitar. The
community mirrors the same relevance, it all depends on the interests of the individuals in the community
(if they like guitar related videos). Since my project is on a platform like YouTube, with many other
individuals trying to make their mark, viewership may be scarce without proper marketing. All in all, my
project is meant for any and all guitar enthusiasts.

3. What impact did your Capstone have on you?

This Capstone is related to self-learning. It allowed me to realize how I work by myself and have no reliance
on a mentor like a teacher in school. Being able to understand who I am is impactful because now I have a
better understanding of how I learn properly. I will be continuing my path in education after graduation,
and I am sure that post-secondary may require some self-learning. Of course, I also got to learn the guitar – I
always wanted to be able to play and this project helped start that interest. I know that after graduating, I
won’t be working in a job related to anything music at all, but this Capstone allowed me to pursue a hobby I
can carry on throughout my entire life.
4. What aspects of your project are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my independence and ability to troubleshoot problems entirely by myself. Whether it
be my learning in guitar or the filming and editing process, I did it all alone. Of course, I would seek help
from YouTube and other forms of online help – however that was sparsely used and only if I couldn’t figure
the problem out myself. I am proud to see the end products I created as well. Each video took some time
and it’s satisfying to see them all together, even if it’s only a few videos.

5. What was a difficulty you encountered while researching your Capstone project? How were you able to
overcome those obstacles?
Researching this project definitely had some difficulties. Whenever I searched for references on academic
pages, the pages that would appear would be either too old or not relevant to what I needed. Some articles
contained few information I could use but at the end of the day I had to rely on references from YouTube
and websites not as “academic”. Aside from that, the only other research I did that I could think of is
learning songs with the guitar which wasn’t hard at all – just needed time and practice.

6. What is the one thing you would have changed about your project if you could?
Though I enjoyed having a YouTube channel and making videos, I would have changed the platform I posted
them on to TikTok. TikTok is an app composed of mostly short form videos and, from personal experience,
has easier/faster engagement if you use the right hashtags. The short form of videos would allow me to
make more videos and editing them wouldn’t take as much time. While the engagement aspect would far
better the community because a lot more people could watch and see my content. Besides that, I am still
fine with my choice of YouTube.

7. What advice would you offer to future Capstone students to help them with their Capstone journey?
There are many things future students must consider when weighing in on their Capstone. One of those
considerations being the topic of their Capstone – it needs to be something these students will enjoy
working on for long periods of time. Don’t pick something easy but boring; it should be something you like.
Once a proper choice has been made, start planning as soon as possible. When you plan, it’s like a safety
blanket for your project and is a good way to keep every aspect of your project in line. Last thing to
mention, don’t forget to ask questions regarding your topic to avoid doing something wrong. It wouldn’t be
nice if you found out in the last two to three weeks that you didn’t fully accomplish your Capstone focus
and had something missing. Always ask and check up with your teacher and peers!
