Zoom/Brightspace Training (Mandatory)

A live session to discuss activating your Zoom account, how to Log-In, and Zoom Class etiquette and
expectations. Also, students will receive a brief introduction on how to navigate to Brightspace
learning management program.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 4TH

Faculty Hot Topics (Mandatory)


*Choose one session. Please note there is an additional choice on Thursday, August 7th*
Professors present legal perspectives on topics straight out of today’s headlines. Prior to Orientation, you
will have the chance to choose from several interesting presentations delivered by faculty experts.

Options:

Investigating the President

Summary: The US Constitution gives the President responsibility for enforcing federal laws. But
how can the system work if the President is the one who may have broken the law? As the saying
goes, "who watches the watchmen"? This presentation covers the recent US Supreme Court
opinions regarding the power of Congress and state-level prosecutors to investigate the
President.

Optional reading: Vance & Mazars Chapter

Insider Trading and In-House Counsel: A Cautionary Tale

Gene Levoff had everything a transactional lawyer could dream of: a Stanford law school grad, a
successful career as a corporate lawyer, a position of prestige with one of the most high-profile

The Dean of Students and administrators will give you an overview of what to expect over the course of
the first year. Students (Sirota) will share valuable study and wellness tips as well. Will also include Office
Hour videos from Library, Office of the Registrar, Student Affairs/SAS, Graduate Programs, and Career
Development Office.

Becoming a lawyer is an educational pursuit that will stretch a student’s capacity for intellectual growth in
many ways. Being the first in your family to go to law school should NOT be an impediment to success.
Loyola’s Generation One program will help students embark on the road to success by providing support
services and access to our vast network of Loyola professionals and Alumni.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 6TH

Options:

License to Kill? – An examination of the legal standard for police use of deadly
force.

The deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and other persons of color at the hands of law
enforcement has generated a much needed discussion about race and the use of deadly force.
With respect to African American and Latinx males in particular, police use of deadly force is far
out of proportion to its use against other ethnicities. This session will focus on the current legal
standard for police use of deadly force, and the California Legislature’s recent attempt to improve
that standard.

This session is your first official Legal Research class, one of your fall courses. Taught by our research
librarians, this session will cover the essential concepts of legal research, including hierarchy of legal
authority, primary and secondary sources, and use of legal databases.

Assistant Director Rebecca Ruschell from our Career Development Office will moderate a panel of alumni
who will share their perspectives on law school and careers.

In this session, you will learn and practice synthesizing the many sources of information – course reading,
research, classroom lecture and discussion – to distill and ultimately retain core legal principles.
