Hi Sandy,
Guess what? I’ve just had a reply from the university and I’ve been accepted! I’m really excited about
moving to Durham, especially as you are already there. I can’t wait to start!
I’m looking online for student accommodation in the area. Can you give me any ideas about where to
look? When I came to Durham for my interview, I walked around the city and got the feel of the place.
I thought the city centre was beautiful and I loved the old cathedral and castle. I was even more
impressed when I found out that the 900-year-old castle is part of the university! Hopefully, I’ll be able
to have a look inside after I start my course. While I was wandering around, I came across the street
where you live. The flats look really nice from the outside, but it’s a pity you weren’t there to show me
around. Anyway, the people were very friendly and I found a food market and some great cafés and
shops.
What’s the archeology department like? Are you enjoying your studies there? I really missed you this
year – I hope we’ll see a lot more of each other once we’re living in the same town!
See you in September!
Love,
Jane
Hi Jane,
That’s great news! Congratulations! I’ll show you around and introduce you to all my friends. It
will be such fun having you here.
I’m sorry I missed you when you came for your interview – I was at an archeological dig near
Hexham. With any luck, I’ll be returning to the same dig next summer. I love archeology and the
lectures are really interesting. Some of my classes are in the history department, so I wouldn’t be
surprised if we meet up there from time to time. My roommate, Tina, has just finished her history
degree. I’ll send you her e-mail address and phone number so that you can ask her questions about
the course – I’m sure she’ll be happy to help you. Tina’s leaving Durham soon, so her room will be
available in September and you can move in with me! The rent is only ₤400 a month and we can
share all the bills, so it won’t be too expensive. I’m sending some photos so you can see what it
looks like. There are two bedrooms and a small living room. The kitchen is quite old, but it’s got a
new stove and a microwave, and there’s also a decent bathroom and shower unit. The best part is
that it’s really close to the university, so you won’t have to worry about catching buses. Let me
know what you think.
Love,
Sandy
