Girls Swim provided a family that helped
swimmers through all of their life challenges
and obstacles.
I thought of the pool deck as my home
away from home, where I could just let loose
all of the outside stress from school or any
other drama. I would never be able to
appreciate the sport of swimming and my
coaches enough for giving me my second
home and my swim family. I did not think that
people realize just how much a sport could
change your life and shaped you as a
person. I would take all of the lessons that I
learned from my coaches and teammates
and used them for the rest of my life.
Swimming was a part of me now, and I could
not love it more, said Elise Sullivan 23.
BREATH OF FRESH AIR
Cristina Taylor 24 takes a breath during her
race. Swimmers had to focus on the race
during meets as swimmers could not get
distracted. During meets my mindset was
mainly to just race rather than worry about
times or what place I got. It was more about
racing your opponents and beating them,
said Taylor.
SWIM FAST
Maya Finn Sapeta 25 races to the finish line.
Swimming was a competitive sport that
required a focus mindset. My main mindset
was just to swim no matter what and not to
worry too much because everyone was
cheering you on, said Septa.
Swimming was not only about who
could get the fastest time or had
the best for but also about hard
work and being a team player.
Although perceived as an
individual sport, swimming required
good teamwork and dedication. I
had found swimming to be a great
outlet for my emotions and
thoughts as well as a place that I
knew I could count on to push
myself out of my comfort zone,
said Makena Wong 24.
BACKSTROKE TO THE END
Alondra Troncoso-Barajas 23 pushes to swim faster during her backstroke.
Athletes minds were focused on swimming fast and beating their times to make
new records. During swim, my mindset was to get ready to beat my old times and
have fun screaming at the top of your lungs for my friends even if it meant losing
my voice for the next couple of days, said Troncoso-Barajas. GO GO GO
Josephine Jojo Nguyen 25 and Abby Wung 25 cheer on their teammates
during a race. Swimming was not an easy sport as swimmers faced challenges
daily. I had been swimming for a long time but I had never swam competitively.
An obstacle I had overcome in swimming was the difficult swim sets. I always

I liked the 2-2-2 drill. So, it was two on
your right arm, two on your left arm, and
two on both arms for fly. I liked the

improve my butterfly.

stressed or angry. Swim to me was not just a sport, it was an
escape, as cliche as it sounds. If I was ever stressed or angry,
swimming helped me calm down almost immediately after
getting in the water no matter what was going on. It was
something that I had grown to love over the years despite
challenges, but I am definitely trying my hardest to improve
everyday, said Liu.

1. CHEERING
Eva Wahidi 25 cheers on her teammates during a
meet. Swimmers were able to improve through hours
on end of practicing. I looked forward to practicing
more than meets. I really enjoyed knowing I was
making progress and the majority of the goals I set for
myself I achieved through practice, said Wahidi.
2. BUTTERFLY
Michelle Wu 25 comes out of the water during her
meet. Swimmers got to form bonds and friendships
throughout the season. I liked swim the most because
I could make a lot of friends. I liked to say hello and
help them, said Wu.

Nylah Canalita 22 swims backstroke during a meet.
Swimmers were motivated through placing and racing
friends. I looked forward to racing my friends and
meeting my goals of getting top three in my race. My
mind set during my races was to swim fast but have
fun, said Canalita.
