Initial Setup
NOTE: If you have purchased more than one StorCenter, complete all steps on one before
setting up additional devices.
1. Use the included network cable to connect the StorCenter device to a network hub or
switch.
— or —
Use the included network cable to connect the StorCenter device directly to a
computer.
2. Connect the included power cord to the back of the StorCenter device and an
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
NOTE: Never plug your StorCenter device directly into a wall socket or power strip.
Unexpected loss of power may corrupt data or damage the StorCenter device
operating system.
3. Power on the StorCenter device using the power button on the back panel.
4. Start your computer, wait for the operating system to load, then insert the CD.
NOTE: If the software doesn't run automatically, double click on the CD icon, then
double click the Setup icon.
Linux Users: The installer writes information to the /usr/bin directory which requires
root-level access. To successfully install the StorCenter Manager software, you will
need to either log in as root or use sudo to launch the installer from the command
line.
5. Install the StorCenter Storage Manager software. Once the installation completes, the
StorCenter Storage Manager software will launch automatically.
NOTE: StorCenter Manager will automatically scan your network when launched. If
you receive a message from Windows Firewall alerting you of network activity, click
the unblock button.
NOTE: For best results use a computer that is connected to the same router, hub, or
switch as the StorCenter device.
6. Once the StorCenter Manager software has found the StorCenter device, log into the
StorCenter device. If you are logging in for the first time, follow the Device Setup
Wizard that will help you create an administrator account and configure the
StorCenter device.

The simplest way to connect to the shared folders on your StorCenter device is to run the
StorCenter Manager software. StorCenter Manager is included on the Solutions CD that
came with your drive. Once installed, the StorCenter Manager software will run
automatically. StorCenter Manager will automatically connect you to the shared folders that
you have permission to access. You can configure which shares are automatically
connected by clicking Access Shared Folders on the StorCenter Manager Home screen.
Simply check the folders to which you wish to be connected and click Apply.
Apply Once
StorCenter Manager has connected to the shared folders, your computer should reconnect
to the StorCenter automatically every time it is restarted. StorCenter Manager is available
for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
In some cases, you may wish to connect to the shared folder without using the StorCenter
Manager. The following instructions describe how this is done:
3. Select the Drive letter to which you wish to map the shared folder.
NOTE: <Device Name> refers to the Storage Device Name setting you entered during
the initial configuration. <Share Name> refers to the shared folder you would like to
access. The default folders on the StorCenter device are public and Backups.
Backups If you
have created users there also may be a shared folder for each user.
5. Check the Reconnect at Login option if you wish to reconnect to this drive letter
when restarting your computer.
7. Enter the Username and Password, if necessary, to connect to the shared network
folder.
NOTE: You may need to map new drive letters if you make changes to StorCenter device
users and shares.

SHARED In
some cases, you may need to click on ALL... and browse to your network drive. If you are
using a version of Mac OS X other than 10.5 or could not find your network drive, use the
following instructions:

If you choose to manually configure your network settings, supply the following
information:
DNS Servers—
Servers—the IP addresses of the DNS (Domain Name System) servers.
WINS Servers—
Servers—the IP addresses of the WINS server.
IP Address—
Address—the static IP address of the Iomega StorCenter device.
An unused IP address from within the range used by the LAN should be used.
Subnet Mask—
Mask—the subnet that the IP address belongs to.
Gateway—
Gateway—the gateway IP address needs to be entered in this field.
Check Enable jumbo frame support to enable jumbo frame support. Jumbo frame support
is useful for transferring large files, such as multimedia files, over a network. Jumbo frame
support increases transfer speed by placing large files in fewer data packets. It also
reduces the demand on the device hardware by having the CPU process more data in fewer
data packets.
Jumbo frame support should only be enabled if you are sure your network is jumbo-frame
compatible and all network devices have been configured to support jumbo frames. It is
recommended that you confirm all network interface cards (NICs) are configured to
support jumbo frames before enabling this feature.
NOTE: If you change the network settings, the device restarts and you have to log back in.

Bluetooth
The Bluetooth settings can be accessed by an administrator from the Settings tab →
Network Services → Bluetooth.
2. Once Bluetooth Transfer is enabled, the Enable Security checkbox can be checked to
require Bluetooth users to supply a unique PIN that you have defined before allowing
them to transfer files to the destination folder on the Iomega StorCenter device. If
you have enabled security, you must define a unique PIN number, which will be
supplied by devices attempting to upload data using Bluetooth.
3. Define a destination folder for files uploaded with Bluetooth. Transferred files can
only be saved to the Iomega StorCenter device's destination folder defined here.Click
the rightmost folder to view any subfolders. Click a subfolder to set it as the

NFS (Network File System) allows remote hosts to mount file systems over a network and
interact with them as though they were mounted locally. NFS provides another protocol for
sharing storage data with Linux hosts. To enable NFS, navigate to the Settings tab, click
Network Services → NFS, and check the Enable NFS checkbox.
If you are logged in as the root user on a client machine accessing the Iomega StorCenter
device through NFS, you can mount a secured share and access the files on it by checking
the Allow root account access checkbox.
When NFS is enabled, you can configure rules for host-based access to folders.
Rules can be added to specify the hosts that are allowed to access folders using NFS. This
page allow you to configure NFS rules to specify access for hosts. For example,
*.cs.foo.com matches all hosts in the domain cs.foo.com. To export a folder to all hosts on
an IP address or subnetwork simultaneously, specify an IP address and netmask pair as
address/netmask where the netmask can be in dotted-decimal format, or as a contiguous
mask length. For example, either /255.255.252.0 or /22 will result in identical
subnetworks.

Filenaming Conventions
When sharing files on a network, you must choose filenames that are compatible with all
devices that will use the file. The StorCenter device shares files using the SMB (Server
Message Block) protocol and stores its files on a EXT2 hard drive. You will need to use
characters supported by these filesystems to successfully share your files. Any filename
supported by a Windows PC should work with most platforms.
Invalid filenames:
Failure to comply with naming guidelines may result in the following error messages:

Name—add a descriptive name to identify the user. For
example, if you created a user with a Username of jsmith, you may want
to add the Descriptive Name Joe Smith.
Administrator—

5. Set the access rights for the user to access the available Shared Folders. An
administrator can modify access rights to any Shared Folder by selecting Read/Write,
Read/Write
Read,
Read or None for that Shared Folder. Unsecured Shared Folders are not displayed in
the list since access to them cannot be restricted.
6. Once you have finished setting the access rights for the user, click Apply to add the
user. If the user was created successfully, a confirmation page will display. Click OK
to return to the Users page or the Home page.
When you enable and configure Active Directory using the StorCenter Manager, it
associates the StorCenter with the Active Directory controller, but does not automatically
add all domain users to StorCenter Manager.
Individual users are added once they access the StorCenter with a valid Active Directory
username and password. At that time, their username will be added to the list of users and
a secured Shared Folder will be created for that user. A secured Shared Folder provides
each user with a private, secured area to save files. By default the public and Backups
Shared Folder are Read/Write access for all users and therefore publicly accessible by all
users.
When Active Directory is enabled, all new users are automatically denied access to existing
secure Shared Folders. Users must first access the StorCenter before an administrator can
grant them access to a Shared Folder. A user must exist in the User Accounts page of the
StorCenter Manager before an administrator can grant them access to a Shared Folder.
NOTE: Administrators cannot add, delete, or modify user accounts displayed in the
StorCenter Manager when Active Directory is enabled. All user account management must
be performed through the domain controller.

Modifying Users
NOTE: Only administrators can perform this operation. Non-administrator users can
change only the descriptive name and password for themselves (1 step process), whereas
an administrator user can change the descriptive name, password, and the Shared Folder
access privileges for any user (2 step process). When logged in as an administrator, user
information is found on the Users tab. When logged in as a non-administrator, user
information is found on the User Information tab.
1. From the Action column of the Users table, click to modify a user's properties.
The Modify User page opens. This is Step 1 of 2.

can be up to 64 characters and spaces are allowed.
NOTE: StorCenter administrators do not have access to all Shared Folders by default.
Access rights to Shared Folders must be granted explicitly to administrators, as with
other users.

Managing Groups
Administrators can grant individual users access rights to Shared Folders on the Iomega
StorCenter device. Groups provides administrators with the added ability to create one or
more groups and grant each group rights to Shared Folders on the Iomega StorCenter
device. Groups can contain one or more groups and one or more users and users can
belong to more than one group. When groups are defined, a user's access rights are the
most rights granted to the user and all groups to which the user belongs.
Access the Groups page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking Groups.
Groups
By default, there are no groups defined. Once an administrator defines one or more
groups, the Groups functionality is dynamically available when creating, modifying, and
viewing users, Shared Folders, and groups. In addition, the help is dynamically updated
with the appropriate content whether groups are defined or not.
If you are running with Active Directory enabled, as opposed to Workgroup mode, the
administrator will have the ability to view Active Directory groups, add them to the Iomega
StorCenter device, and change the group's Shared Folder access. However, when Active
Directory is enabled, the administrator cannot create, modify, or update group or user
permissions using the Iomega StorCenter Manager as these features are hidden. The
administrator must adjust permissions on the Active Directory domain controller.

Erase Disks provides two options for irrecoverably deleting all data on your Iomega
StorCenter device: Quick Erase and Secure Erase. The default option, Quick Erase,
permanently deletes all record of existing or deleted data, users, and passwords. The
Secure Erase option takes significantly longer, but provides an added security benefit by
overwriting all disks with random data in addition to permanently erasing all data on the
disks to prevent recovery of existing or deleted data, users, and passwords.
Since this operation renders all data irrecoverable, to prevent accidental data loss you must
manually delete all folders from your Iomega StorCenter device prior to performing a disk
erase operation. You can use the disk erase feature only to erase the disks internal to the
Iomega StorCenter device. You cannot use this feature to erase any external storage
devices that may be connected.
Access the Erase Disks page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking Disks >Manage
Manage

Erase Disks.
Disks
1. Before you can erase data from the disks, you must delete all folders from the
device.
2. Once all folders are deleted, navigate to the Settings tab, click Disks,
Disks and then click
the Manage Disks link.
3. Click Erase Disks and the Erase All Data from Drives page displays.
After erasing the disks, you must shut down and restart the Iomega StorCenter
device and perform a device setup again to use the device.

What is an Array?
Changing the Data Protection
What is JBOD?
What is RAID 1?
The StorCenter device comes preconfigured with a RAID 1 array. To enhance your
experience with your StorCenter device, it is very important to become familiar with the
basics of array handling.
What is an Array?
Arrays are devices that combine multiple physical disks into a single logical volume. RAID,
or Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or Independent) Disks, is a method of combining
multiple disks for data redundancy in case of a disk failure. This section describes each of
the different types of arrays supported by your StorCenter device.
CAUTION! Some RAID configurations add a level of redundancy for your data; however,
RAID should not be your only means of backup.
top of page
Before you can switch data protection schemes, you must delete all data from the device
by removing all Shared Folders. If you are unfamiliar with RAID protection, it is
recommended that you do not adjust this setting.
4. Check the confirmation checkbox and click Apply to change the data protection.
Data protection will begin to rebuild and the Dashboard will display the current
status.
top of page
JBOD, also known as spanning, combines multiple hard drives into a single large volume.
Data is not written in parallel to multiple disks. Data is written to a single disk until it is
full and then written to the next disk in the set. Spanning does not provide any data
redundancy. Spanning requires two or more hard drives.
top of page
What is RAID 1?
RAID 1 mirrors or duplicates the contents of one drive on another equally-sized drive.
Mirroring provides optimal data integrity and immediate access to your data if one drive
fails. The StorCenter device only supports two-drive RAID 1 configurations. The RAID
capacity is half the physical capacity of the two drives.

Transfer
The Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) allows pictures to be automatically loaded onto the
Iomega StorCenter device simply by plugging in the USB cable of a compatible camera
without the aid of a computer. Check Enable Picture Transfer to turn on this feature. You
can also choose to automatically delete the pictures from your camera once they have been
safely copied to your Iomega StorCenter device by checking Remove Copied Pictures From
Camera.
Camera
When Picture Transfer is enabled, and your camera is connected to your Iomega StorCenter
device, the pictures are copied to the configured Destination Folder.
Folder You can set the
destination folder within any Shared Folder on the device. Click the rightmost folder to
view any subfolders, or click a Shared Folder or subfolder to set it as the destination folder

The Iomega StorCenter device has a built-in media server that, when enabled, can scan for
media content in specific Shared Folder directories.
Access the Media Server page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking
Media Services > Media Server.
Server The Media Server supports playback of videos, music and
pictures from any UPnP AV (Universal Plug and Play Audio Visual) network media players,
® ® ®
such as iTunes , Windows Media Player , or Xbox 360 .
The Iomega StorCenter device's built-in media server scans for files in the Media Folder
directory specified on the Media Server page and any Public Media directory created
directly below any user's shared folder. Any media content contained in these specific
directories will be scanned by the Iomega StorCenter media server and accessible to any
user on your network with a media player.
Media content placed in the Public Media subfolder of a secured Shared Folder can be seen
by all users on your network, even if they have not been granted access to the Shared
Folder. Do not put content in this directory unless you are comfortable sharing it with
other users.
Once the media server is enabled, by default, the Media Folder is set as the Media directory
in the public Shared Folder. To change the Media Folder, click Shared Folders to view a list
of Shared Folders.
The Media Server automatically scans for media content on a regular basis. However, you
can click Scan now at any time to force the media server to perform an immediate scan for
media content. This is especially useful after you have changed the Media Folder or after
you copy a large amount of media content to your Iomega StorCenter device.
You can move all of your media files from your individual home computers to your Iomega
StorCenter device and have the ability to access all of your media content from any media
networked device.
The procedures shown below are intended as examples. Your media player or version may
operate slightly differently than documented here. It is recommended that you refer to
your media player documentation on how to add a network device.
Setting up iTunes
This example assumes that the Media Folder is set to the default and that the Shared
Folders are connected to the computer in use.
3. When you open the iTunes Library your Media folder will automatically display.
This example assumes that the Media Folder is set to the default and that the Shared
Folders are connected to the computer in use.
1. Connect your Xbox 360 to your TV and connect your Xbox to the same local network
as your Iomega StorCenter device.
4. Click Yes, Continue when asked if you have downloaded and installed media sharing
software on your computer, since the Iomega StorCenter device comes
preconfigured with this software.
5. Select Iomega StorCenter device from the list of names. You should now see all the
public media content on your device.

The Video Surveillance page displays a list of the UPnP video cameras that are connected to
the same network as your Iomega StorCenter device. When no supported cameras are
connected to your network, this page will be empty. The Video Surveillance page can be
accessed from the Setting tab by clicking Media Services > Video Surveillance.
Surveillance
This page provides basic status information about your video camera and recordings, and
allows an administrator to manage the camera's settings. The table contains a row for each
connected video camera with the following columns: Action,
Action Name,
Name Space,
Space and Model.
Model
These columns are described below.
Action
Click to view the Video Surveillance camera information. This page displays the
video camera's IP address, video camera's name, video camera's login username, and
the destination folder for the video recordings files. In addition, it provides the
Camera Configuration link, which when clicked will open the camera software
configuration page in a new browser window where you can control the camera
configuration settings using the camera's native software.
Click to modify the video camera's setting. Here you can set the username and
password used to access the video camera's settings, set the destination folder for
your recording files, and configure a video recording schedule.
Click to open a live view from your camera. You may be prompted to supply the
username and password for the camera.
Click to remove a video camera which was once attached to the network but
which is no longer available.
Name
This column displays the name of the camera, which can be changed to a more familiar
name by modifying the video camera's setting in the Iomega StorCenter Device Manager. It
also displays an icon that indicates the current state of the video camera. The following
table describes the possible states:
The video camera is connected to the network and a recording schedule is set
for it, but it is not currently recording.
Space
The Space column identifies how much space is currently consumed by the video files in
the destination folder of this video camera. Click to leave the Video Surveillance page and
go directly to the configured destination folder in the Shared Folder tab, which contains
the latest saved recordings from this camera.
Model
This column lists the model information for this video camera.
Record
The Record column allows you to manually start and stop recording by clicking or
respectively. These buttons are available only for video cameras that are currently
connected and accessible on the network. Use the manual start and stop record buttons to
start recording at any point and to stop a recording until the next scheduled start time.
1. From the Settings tab, click Media Services > Video Surveillance to access the Video
Cameras page, which displays a table of video cameras attached to your network.
2. From the Action column of the Video Cameras table, click to modify the settings
for a particular video camera. The Video Camera Settings wizard opens.
4. Supply the username and password for the video camera. This is the username and
password set through this camera's native configuration software. The Iomega
StorCenter device uses this information to access the camera, to provide live views,
and to create recordings.
5. Configure the Destination Folder for your recording files. When your video camera is
recording, the video files are saved to this folder. Within the destination folder, the
Iomega StorCenter automatically organizes your saved video recordings into
subfolders by video camera name. Within each video camera name subfolder are
subfolders that organize your video camera's recordings by date. For example, if you
set the destination folder to public/Media/Videos and the name of your camera is
HomeDoor,
HomeDoor a recording made on June 17, 2008, can be found at
public/Media/Videos/HomeDoor/20080617.
public/Media/Videos/HomeDoor/20080617
The destination folder can be located in any Shared Folder on the Iomega StorCenter
device. Click the rightmost folder to view any subfolders, or click a Shared Folder or
subfolder to set it as the destination folder for this camera's recordings.
7. Select either Maximum days to save recordings or Maximum space for recordings.
recordings
This determines how long your recordings are saved on the Iomega StorCenter
device before they are automatically deleted. If you select Maximum days to save
recordings,
recordings enter a value in days. If you select Maximum space for recordings,
recordings enter
a value in gigabytes. Setting this value too high may consume all available space,
while setting this value too low may cause recordings to be deleted sooner than you
would like.
9. To schedule specific times to start and stop recording with this video camera, check
Schedule Recordings.
Recordings The scheduler options display. You can override a scheduled
recording by starting or stopping a recording manually from the main Video
Surveillance page.
10. Check the days of the week to record and specify a Start Time and an End Time.
11. Click Apply to save your changes, a confirmation page displays, click OK to return to
the main Video Surveillance page.

You can reset the StorCenter by holding the reset button on the back panel for 15 seconds.
The status light on the front panel will blink red once the reset process has started. If the
StorCenter was properly reset you will be required to reperform the Initial Configuration
steps.
Resetting the StorCenter will return the device name, administrator password, date/time,
and email notifications to their default setting. Users, groups, and shares will not be
affected by the reset with the exception that administrator users will be reset to non-
administrator status. When you reconfigure the box you can enter the name of an existing
user in the Administrator field and administrator privileges will be restored for that user.

2. Enter the following information to create a web address for your Iomega StorCenter
device and define an email address:
Domain Name—
Name—Create a web address for your Iomega StorCenter device by
specifying a domain name, such as foo.com. The domain name will become
the device name and the web address used to remotely access the storage
device.
Web Address—
Address—The web address that is created by putting a www. in front of
the domain name and is displayed here. This will ultimately be the address
that you use to access your Iomega StorCenter device remotely.
Email Address—
Address—Enter a valid email address. The email address will be
registered with the DDNS server to notify you about domain name renewals.
3. Click Apply to reserve your domain name and proceed to the registration process
where you can purchase your subscription.

4. Click Register with TZO to purchase your registration subscription. A new browser
window will be opened and you will be redirected to the TZO site where you can
purchase your subscriptions at special rates.
5. Once you have purchased your registration, return to the Remote Access page and
click Apply to restart the Iomega StorCenter device software and enable remote
access. When the device restarts your remote access settings are applied, your web
address will be registered with TZO, and your router will be automatically
configured.
NOTE: If your router cannot be automatically configured, refer to Port Forwarding for
information on manually configuring your router before clicking OK to return to the
Remote Access Settings page and attempting to enable remote access again. In
addition, the Iomega StorCenter Manager will attempt to automatically reconnect
your connected folders using the new device name. If you had any connected folders
prior to renaming the device, you may have to confirm that they were properly
reconnected.

Once you have enabled remote access and created your web address, you can access files
stored on your Iomega StorCenter device from any internet-capable computer in the world.
When you access your Iomega StorCenter device remotely, you can access files from any
folder to which you are granted access. However, accessing your Iomega StorCenter device
from a remote location, will not provide all the same functionality provided by a computer

Torrent downloads allow you to download files using a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol.
With Torrent Download, you can download files using the torrent protocol to your device
and then those files can be downloaded by other torrent users. You can access the Torrent
Download Settings page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking Torrent Download.
Download
You can add torrent jobs by selecting the Manage torrent downloads on the Home page.
page
This is the maximum download speed for files you are downloading to your device.
This speed affects how fast you want files added to your device.
This is the maximum upload speed for files being uploaded by other users from your
device. The upload speed can affect device performance, as it sets the speed at
which other users upload a file unprompted from your device. It is recommended
that you choose a value that does not strain the performance of your device and
impact other work on it.
4. Set a Port value used by torrent peers to upload files from your Iomega StorCenter
device.
The port value should be a number in the 6881-6999 range and your router must be
configured to allow port forwarding on the same port. Refer to Port Forwarding for
more information on how to do this.

Managing Quotas
You can limit the amount of space allocated to one or more folders using quotas. Access
the Quotas page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking Quotas.
Quotas
Quotas are a great tool for limiting how much data is stored in a specific folder. If the used
space of a folder exceeds 90% of its quota, a status message displays on the Home and
Dashboard tabs. If you click the status message, the Quotas page opens, displaying the
quota table so that you can adjust the quota limit or access the folder to delete content to
create free space. Any folders that exceeds its quota limit is highlighted with a unique icon
and text formatting.
Setting quotas
The quota table displays, listing all existing folders, their current size, and a field to
specify a quota value.
This value is automatically applied to all new folders created. In addition, you can
apply it manually to any existing folders. To apply the default quota to any existing
folders, click in the Quota column of the table.
3. To specify unique quota values for a folder, enter a value in the folder's Quota
column.
The minimum value for a quota is .1 GB, and it can be increased in .1 GB increments.
You cannot specify a quota that exceeds the total disk space of the device.
Disabling quotas
To disable quotas, uncheck the Enable quotas checkbox, and click Apply.
Apply All previously set

Overview
By default, the Iomega StorCenter device does not burden you with the requirement of
creating an administrator, with user name and password, that requires you to log in to
your own device. In the default setup, any user on your local network can access and
configure your Iomega StorCenter device and security is provided by your local area
network. However, if you have data you wish to secure, want to create unique users or
groups, would like to create secure folders, plan to use Active Directory, or require
additional security, you can optionally enable security.
Access the Security Settings page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking Security

When you enable security, you will be asked to create an administrator user. With security
enabled, only administrator users can view or change settings on the Iomega StorCenter
device, including creating or deleting users and folders. When security is enabled, data
contained within public folders can still be accessed by anyone within your local network.
To secure any sensitive data, create a secure folder and move your sensitive data into that
folder for safe keeping.
1. Access the Security Settings page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking
Security Settings.
Settings
2. Select the Enable security checkbox. When Enable security is selected, the create an
administrator user fields display.
NOTE: When security is enabled, browser communications with the device are
encrypted. Therefore, each computer that attempts to access the StorCenter device
may encounter a security warning, which can be safely ignored. In addition, you may
be asked to accept a signed certificate for the StorCenter device, which you should
accept. If you change the device name at a later date, these warnings may appear
again.
Password—
Password—create a password for this administrator user. For stronger
security, it is recommended that the password be between 8 and 12
characters; spaces are not allowed.
Confirm Password—
Password—confirm the password. If the text in this field does not
match the text in the Password field, an error will be returned.
NOTE: Iomega StorCenter administrators do not have access to all folders by default.
Access rights to folders must be granted explicitly to administrators, as with other
users.

Disabling Security
Disabling security will cause all defined users and groups to be deleted.
NOTE: You cannot disable security when remote access is enabled or an Active Directory
Domain is in use as these features require security. you must disable these features before
you can disable security. For more information on disabling remote access, refer to
Remote Access. For more information on disabling an Active Directory Domain by using
WORKGROUP mode, refer to Network Settings.
1. Access the Security Settings page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking

Port Forwarding
Most home routers or gateways use a NAT firewall to protect your home network from the
Internet.
NAT or Network Address Translation works by hiding your computer's IP address from
internet devices and replacing it with the gateway IP address. It will then forward internet
traffic to the proper computer.
To further protect your home network, the NAT firewall disallows unrequested traffic from
the internet. Some applications, such as Torrents and Remote Access, require unrequested
inbound connections. To use these features with your StorCenter device, you will need to
configure your router to allow inbound connections for these applications. This is known
as Port Forwarding.
top of page
The Iomega StorCenter will attempt to automatically configure your router to port forward
for remote access, once that feature is enabled. If the StorCenter is unsuccessful or if you
need to use other features such as torrent download or FTP, you will need to manually
configure your router.
NOTE: Before port forwarding, you will want to change your StorCenter to a static IP
address.
The port forwarding steps will vary depending on your router. You will need to consult the
user's manual that came with your router for more information. In most cases you should
look for a section on port forwarding OR application access.
Although, Iomega cannot provide you with exact steps for your router, we can provide
some information on settings fields commonly found on Port Forwarding screens. (Not all
fields are found on all devices. Fields may appear in a different order on your router.)
Linksys Users: In addition to Port forwarding you will need to deselect Block Anonymous
Internet Requests on the Firewall settings page.
For step by step instructions on some router models, see Port Forwarding—Router Specific
Instructions.
* Generally the External and Internal port settings will match; however, since a port can
only be forwarded to one device you may need to change the external port to avoid a
forwarding conflict. For example, if your router has external (web) configuration enabled it
may already be using port 443. You may need to set the external port to 8080, etc.
† You can find your StorCenter device's IP address on the Settings → Network Services →
Network Settings screen.
‡ These must match the port range you set in the Torrent Downloads screen under the
Settings tab. Some Internet Service Providers block ports 6881-6999.

If you have more than one router, make sure that the primary router (usually the one
connected to or acting as the DSL/Cable modem) is the only one with DHCP (Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol) and NAT (Network Address Translation) enabled. The second or
cascaded router should be changed to bridging mode. Make sure the second router
connects to the primary router using a standard port rather than the port labeled uplink or
Internet. This will basically turn your secondary router into a switch; however, you can still
enable its Wireless Access Point (if equipped).
See the documentation that came with your router for configuration information and
settings.
If for some reason the network configuration cannot be changed and your setup requires
the double NAT, you must perform the port forwarding steps twice. On the primary router,
port forward to the cascaded router's external IP address. On the Cascaded router, port
forward to the StorCenter's IP address. Use the table above for port settings.

Troubleshooting
If you encounter a problem while connecting or using your StorCenter device, check the
topics listed below for possible solutions.
Click on any of the following topics to expand or close the troubleshooting information.
Make sure you are using the power cable that came with your drive. Ensure that it is
correctly connected.
2. Verify that the power cable is plugged into a working power outlet.
Make sure the status light is on. If it is not, press and release the power button.
When the status light is blue, the drive is ready to use.
top of page
Make sure the drive is powered on. See Connecting the StorCenter device.
Make sure you are using a functional Ethernet cable. We suggest using the Ethernet
cable that shipped with your drive. Verify that the link LED on the back of the drive is
on.
For best results, connect the StorCenter device to the same router as your computer.
Make sure your network only has one device acting as a DHCP server. If your
network has multiple routers, you may have multiple devices running DHCP. See the
documentation that came with your DHCP device to reconfigure your network.

If some of the computers on your network cannot connect to the StorCenter device, your
network may be configured with multiple routers (DHCP & NAT) or with multiple DHCP
servers (some network devices also act as a DHCP device).
If you have more than one router, make sure that the primary router (usually the one
connected to or acting as the DSL/Cable modem) is the only one with DHCP

Always use StorCenter Manager to change the drive's name. Changing the name on your
host computer does not change the name on the network. You can change the device
name using the StorCenter Manager software. When you have logged into the device, click

I changed the Network Name of the drive in Device Settings and I can no longer access it
on my network
Your computer needs to update its list of devices on the network. There are several
possible solutions:
Restart your computer. The restart should force your computer to update its list. On
large corporate networks this may not always work.
You may still be able to access the drive using the IP Address (e.g.: \\192.168.3.7 )
until your computer automatically updates its list. See How do I find the device's IP

Modifying users and groups will cause the StorCenter's Samba (SMB file sharing) service to
restart. When this service restarts, all current connections will be interrupted. Your
computer should automatically reconnect to the share once the service has been restarted.
If your connection is not restored, use the StorCenter Manager software to reconnect to the
StorCenter.
CAUTION! Do not create new users and groups while the StorCenter is performing a data
transfer. When the connection is severed, the data transfer will be interrupted and data
may be lost.

Connecting and disconnecting a printer causes the StorCenter's Samba (SMB file sharing)
service to restart. When this service restarts, all current connections will be interrupted.
Your computer should automatically reconnect to the share once the service has been
restarted. If your connection is not restored, use the StorCenter Manager software to
reconnect to the StorCenter.
CAUTION! Do not connect or disconnect printers while the StorCenter is performing a data

Your sole and exclusive remedy for a covered defect is repair or replacement of the
defective product, at Iomega’s sole option and expense (shipping may be charged), and
Iomega may use new or refurbished parts or products to do so. The replaced part/product
will be warranted for the remainder of the original warranty or three (3) months from the
date of shipment of such parts/products, whichever is longer. If Iomega is unable to repair
or replace a defective product, your alternate exclusive remedy shall be a refund of the
original purchase price.
The above is Iomega’s entire obligation to you under this warranty. IN NO EVENT SHALL
IOMEGA BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES OR
LOSSES, INCLUDING LOSS OF DATA, USE, OR PROFITS EVEN IF IOMEGA HAS BEEN ADVISED
OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. In no event shall Iomega’s liability exceed the
original purchase price of the drive or the media disk. Some jurisdictions do not allow the
exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or
exclusion may not apply to you.

then click the magnifying glass icon to quickly locate specific information. You must type
three or more letters for the search function to work.
If you type two words in the search box, such as "Windows format", the search will locate
topics that contain either "Windows" or "format".
Advanced Search
To search for a specific phrase or group of words, enter a "+" (plus) sign followed by the
word or phrase you want to locate. When using the plus sign, do not leave any space
between it and the query string. The search will then bring up topics that have all the
words in the search query.
Example: "+Windows format" will search for topics that contain both "format" and
"Windows".
