Independent dealers continue to dominate replacement channel

I
ndependent tire dealers account for approximately 63% of the U.S. consumer tire retail market, according to MTD’s 2020 Facts Issue, versus 62.5% in
2018 and 61.5% the previous year. Mass merchandisers (10.5%), auto dealerships (9.5%), warehouse clubs (8.5%), tire company-owned stores (6%) and
miscellaneous outlets (2.5%) make up the rest of the consumer tire channels in the U.S. Of the five non-independent tire dealer channels, four – mass
merchandisers, warehouse clubs, auto dealerships and miscellaneous outlets – remained flat versus 2019. Tire company-owned stores lost a half-point of
share between 2018 and 2019.
As in previous years, the 2020 MTD 100 represents the independent side of consumer and commercial tire sales in the U.S., including franchise locations
like Midas and Big O. Here’s a snapshot of where non-independent dealer tire sales channels were at the beginning of 2020, according to MTD’s Facts Issue:
Mass merchandisers: Walmart Auto Care Centers (2,584 locations. Note: In June 2020, Walmart announced it will close 106 Tire Lube and Express operations

More consumer tires are being sold through e-commerce platforms, including Amazon, eBay, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (via www.goodyear.com);
onlinetires.com; Simple Tire; Tirebuyer.com, which is owned by ATD; Tirescanner.com and others. In April 2020, MTD reported that Michelin North America
Inc. made the decision to shut down its e-commerce platform.
