How To Increase The Size of Your Wardrobe

The Current Problem

Traditionally, builders love to build a simple and cheap shelf and rail wardrobe
installed between 1600mm & 1800mm from the floor. They are cheaply made
and do not last the test of time, get overloaded and fall down.

These Types Of Robes Create Major Problems:

1. You cannot use double hang to maximize the wardrobe.
2. The shelf becomes overcrowded and a messy jumble.
3. The distance between the shelf and the ceiling is usually about 600mm to
800mm and wastes valuable storage space.
4. A shirt hangs down approximately 900mm to 1100 mm and the space below
the shirt is wasted.
5. Shoes have no storage space and end up on the floor making the wardrobe

How much time is spent on looking for lost
items?

Not only is the shelf and rail inefficient

storage but it is also very wasteful of our

The amount of time people spend looking for lost things varies...

In John Ortberg’s book, “When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box” and in James Gleick’s 1999
book “Faster”, we spend sixteen minutes a day (roughly one year of our lives) looking for lost possessions.

Meanwhile, according to a study conducted by a Boston marketing firm, the average

person burns 55 minutes a day looking for things they know they own but cannot find.
That adds up to a total of almost 14 days a year people spend just trying to find lost things.

A survey by the holiday company Ocean Village claims that we clock in 31 minutes a day hunting for
lost things - remote controllers, keys, socks and shoes, lottery tickets, passports and shouting “you

 1. Maximize Vertical Space
What does this mean?
As we mentioned above, cheap traditional wardrobes have dead zones of space that can be hard
to access and quickly become a cluttered nightmare. To fix this we maximize the entire height of the
space, top to bottom.

How?
We install a high top shelf, a bottom shelf and divide the space up into useful Zones. The top shelf
is installed to suit your needs and maximize the upper area for seldom used items like seasonal
clothing. The bottom shelf is used to get your shoes off the floor, making it easy to clean under and
solve your shoe floor pile.

Benefits?
Maximum storage, minimal wasted space.
Putting in a bottom shelf will not interfere with the hanging, but will allow you to store your
flats and wedge shoes. Keep everything off the floor and make cleaning easy.

Why not just move the existing shelf up?

Yes you can. However, the problem with that, is that you cannot see what is on the top shelf.
This is one of the reasons why builders have always installed the shelf and rail so low, to
allow visibility of the shelf for an average height person. The solid shelf also allows dust to
collect with dark dusty corners which are perfect places for bugs and mould to accumulate.

Concerns
Generally, we install the top shelf at around 2200mm from the floor. We often get asked: Can
I reach this height? Yes! We have installed at this height for many years and even our head
designer who is shorter than 5ft can hang items without a step ladder, no problems.

How?
Have you ever decided to do a clean out of
your wardrobe and discovered a pile of stuff
you forgot you owned and wished you wore
more often? Experience tell us that you only
wear the clothes and shoes you can see.
This means toss out your old shoe boxes
and get your shoes out on display. Try keep-
ing them on the bottom shelf or try a triple
gliding shoe rack. Try putting your favourite

Not everyone has the same wardrobe needs. Come into our showroom and get a free custom
design from our experts, tailored to your exact needs. Maximizing space is our main goal.
Your wardrobe isn’t 100% ball gowns, as glamorous as that life sounds. Having a space that is
only long hang is a waste. Hanging shirts, blouses and short skirts in a long hang space creates
what we call “dead zones”. We suggest splitting this area into a double hang and have a narrow
long hang, getting twice the storage room. We can design your long hanging space at a custom
width for your glamourous ball gown collection.

Both systems are considered ‘open systems’. This is in comparison to the old boxy, closed in
traditional wardrobe. This allows better visibility and air circulation.

Lynda’s Hot Tips to help you get organized

1) When cleaning out your wardrobe decide which items should be kept and which can be discarded or
given to charity. Some people use the two year rule of thumb. If you haven’t worn it for two years, it’s
time to say goodbye. What about my wedding dress you ask? Yes, keep that one and store on the
top shelf in a container. Try on occasionally and see if it fits. If it doesn’t fit, quickly throw it back on
the top shelf and tell NO ONE.

2) Select a storage system that can adapt to your changing needs. That way you can reconfigure and
reuse solutions to solve a variety of storage and organization problems.

3) Items most used should be stored at eye level or below. Seasonal items can be stored on higher lev-
els or in vacuum sealed bags.

 A Story for the Ladies...
Some time ago my Husband decided to convert our lounge room into a Home Theatre...
He announced this decision one morning after reading about Home Theatres in the Saturday paper.
He declared that it shouldn’t cost much and that the whole family would enjoy the Movie Experience at
Home. Yes, I agreed it sounded like a great plan.
We selected the paint colour to create the atmosphere in our new home theatre.
He started by removing all the furniture, covered the floor in tarps and painted the walls and ceilings. A
great effect was achieved. We even ordered some movie posters from a web site in the US and had them
framed. I LOVED the movie poster from the Titanic.
The first electronic gadget he purchased from our local Hi-Fi shop was the Amplifier. One needed a top
of the range Amplifier for high quality sound. To be honest, I could not hear much difference, but I agreed
it was what we needed.
After about a month he declared the speakers needed to be upgraded. Off he went again. This time re-
turning with two boxes containing the Bose Rear speakers. He declared that rear speakers were needed
to create the full surround experience.
After about another month, he stated that to create the full impact of hi-fi sound we would need a new set
of front speakers. Off he went again, only to return with another set of Bose Speakers. These were much
larger than the previous set.
As you can see a pattern developing, next came the blue ray player, followed by a projector, more cables,
a very large screen, sub-woofer, subscription to a Hi-Fi Magazine, and a few other must have gadgets.

What’s this got to do with a new wardrobe?

If my Husband had declared at the start that he was going to spend around the $8,000 mark on electron-
ics at the start of the project, I probably would have said No!
Whilst our wardrobe system may not be the cheapest available in the market place, we believe that it is
one of the best. We pride ourselves on only selling high quality products that we use every day and are
installed throughout our own home.

Here is the point that I’m making, Ladies....

If you are concerned with your budget and your other half declaring that spending that much money on
your wardrobe is a waste of money, you can always start with the basic shell. Set up the elfa top venti-
