Color is the most important and most noticeable of all elements of visual arts.
Color relies on light. In fact, color is what the eyes see when light is reflected off an
object.
Color has three properties or traits . These are :
o HUE is the name of a color, such as red, blue, or yellow. Hues are arranged in a circular
format on a color wheel. Red, yellow and blue are the primary hues. They are equally
spaced on the color wheel.
o VALUE is the lightness or darkness of a hue. The value of a hue can be changed by adding
white or black.
o INTENSITY is the brightest or dullness of a hue. Pure hues are high-intensity colors.
Colors are also classified in several ways. Based on how they are produced, colors are classified
into PRIMARY, SECONDARY and INTERMEDIATE.
PRIMARY COLORS are blue, red, and yellow ( BRY ).
- they are described as primary colors because they are the first to be produced and the
rest of the colors are produced as a result of their combination
.
SECONDARY COLORS are green, orange, violet ( GOV )
- they are produced by combining two primary colors.
Example : green is a product of combining blue and yellow.
INTERMEDIATE COLORS are red-violet ( RV ), red- orange ( RO )
- they are produced by combining one primary colors and one secondary colors.
According to their position in the color wheel, they are ADJACENT, ANALOGOUS,
COMPLEMENTARY, SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY, OR TRIADIC.
ADJACENT COLORS are those colors situated next to each other in the color wheel.
Example: are red and red- orange.
ANALOGOUS COLORS are three or four neighboring colors with color in all mixtures.
COMPLEMENTARY COLORS are those colors situated opposite each other in the color
wheel.
Ex. Red and green, blue and orange.
SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY COLORS are any three colors forming a Y in the color wheel.
Double split complementary colors are two sets of three colors forming a Y in the color
wheel.
TRIADIC COLORS are a set of three colors forming a triangle in the color wheel.
Based on their effect on the visual sense, they are either COOL or WARM.
COOL COLORS, are those colors that are inconspicuous and not striking to the eyes.
- Also called receding colors , they suggest distance, tranquility, sobriety, and restfulness.
WARM COLORS, are those colors that are conspicuous and striking to the eyes.
- also called advancing colors , they suggest warmth, vivacity, cheerfulness, exultation,
stimulation, instinctive action, and excitement.
According to value, they are either LIGHT or DARK.
LIGHT COLORS/ TINTS are those colors with values lower than the normal value .
Ex. Pink or fuschia is a tint of red.
DARK COLORS / SHADES are those colors with values higher than the normal value.
Ex. Maroon is a shade of red.
Based on intensity, they are either BRIGHT or DARK.
