Comprehension passage
Diary of a Drug Addict
John was in prison. He wrote this sitting by himself, alone and frightened. I was only 7 years old
when it all started. Looking back, I see how stupid I was. I trust my brother Wilfred and his friends and that
was the stupidest mistake I’ve made. They told that drugs were fun and that they would not harm me, and I
believe them. I joined my brother group and did popular, so I joined my brother’s group and did everything I
could to make like me. I started smoking with them and I was pleased when they let me share their cigarettes
which had stuff in them. I was their toy
I stayed away from school and when I did go, I was rude and lazy. Friends stopped talking to me. I
began to stay out late. My parents were desperate and so a year later, we moved to a different area and a new
school, It wasn’t easy at the beginning, but I tried very hard to stay healthy and do my school work. I even
joined the athletics club. But it all happen again. I think my problem was that I trusted anyone who was kind
to me. There was one older boy who became my friend. He gave drugs for nothing at first and soon returned
to my old bad habits. I was so unhappy that I couldn’t stop taking drugs. I can’t remember ever feeling well
or happy, or normal since.
With drugs, there is always a price I was forced to go out and do bad things like stealing, even from
my family, so that I could pay for my drugs, I haven’t been able to look in a mirror since without wanting to
smash it. It is not worth it, as you end up hating yourself, losing the love of your family (which is even
worse) or not having friends. Honestly, I don’t remember being happy. Drugs stole my chance in life. I’ve
lost my education, my health, my family and my future.
