Abstract
The purpose of this internship report is briefly described what is networking in working
environment, especially when I stayed in Wollo University.I have trie to find out what is the
relationship between my theoretical knowledge and real world practical working system in the
environment. I have been observing practical implementation monitoring services on a network
by using KIOT-ICT
 Chapter one

1.Introduction
I have done my internship in Wollo University Kombolcha campus (KIOT-ICT). This practice
could be done from July 1/2008 to august 30/2008. In the first four weeks I take training on
Cisco training center by Cisco KIOT-ICT staff members. After the training I will do logical design
of campus by using packet racer. In this field practice, I have learned basic skills about
networking and hardware network installation that is distributing wired network in student lab
and office. My summer practice was mainly focused on basic hardware network installation,
understand the general interconnection of the network, arranging and crimping of cable and
we observed more networking devices and data center of the campus(KIOT-ICT).

In this document, I have started my report by introducing the organization . After that, I
have listed the detailed information about what I have done in this field practice. Next I will
summarize my report at the conclusion part and finally I will finish my report by listing the
source documents that I have used as a reference during the practice time at the references
part this document.

The in scope of this internship is to know how to design ,install ,configure and
troubleshoot network .Out scope of the internship is I didn’t configure the networking devices
like AP (Access Point) and didn’t configure vlan. I didn’t install WI-FI network. The full mail

 2. Background of organization

Wollo University is one of the well known Universities which were established in 1997 E.C by
the ministry of education. This University is located in Amara Region south Wollo Zone in
Kombolcha town which is 376 km far from Addis Ababa. The KIOT-ICT is one of the
administrative and academic sections in Wollo University. The ICT office also started its service
when the Wollo University was established as I asked from the ICT head. The Wollo Information
and Communication Technology Center (ICTC) team provides the primary management and
support for computing and technology services within the University. The ICTC manages the
wired and wireless network infrastructure, campus computer classrooms and all data center
with in the campus and facilities network service.

2.1 mission

The KIOT is established to achieve the following mission:-

 To educate prospective graduates, provide knowledge and develop skills in technology,

engineering, planning and designing for the industry and economy
 To conduct technology base applied research, project and studies that are based on
priorities that the reflect the need of country, the region, woredas, kebele and the
private sector industries and economies.
 To create an environment that is conductive to the cultivation of social skill and
entrepreneurship among students and staff.
 To serve as a model for other educational institutions with in the country and provide
them with the necessary technological education and advanced training.

3. Statement of the problem

There are some problems faced during summer field practice .Those are:-

 Lack of Willingness of employees to show me the overall system.

 The shortage of electric power in the campus also makes us to not let my work
successfully.
 The shortage of materials like switch, cable and cable tester, RJ45.
 Network professional workers are busy because of meeting in the campus and out of
campus.
 Lack of wise use resource.

2. Internship Discussion

2.1 Were the objective achieved?

The main objective of this internship is to practice the theoretical knowledge learned in the
class room. The objective were achieved that means I know how to design ,configure ,install
and troubleshoot network.

2.2 What skill were learned during the internship?

During this internship I gained different skills some of this are:-

 Listening skills: These skills enable me to recognize what another person is saying.
They comprise new ways of responding so that the other person feels his troubles
and feelings have been understood. And I respond immediate thing to the speaker
man.
 Speaking skill: in this skill I can speak to every person for my or his want to fill .
 Conflict-resolution skills: These skills enable me to resolve or manage conflicts
effectively. Especial in my work section during project execution the difference of
idea is obvious so that to overcome such idea overlap as a team a used to different
mechanism of conflict resolution. for the future I will enter into different
organization in that organization different employee is their they may be occur
conflict so I can resolve the problem as I learn during two month intern ship.
 Asking skill: I ask questions so I am sure of the objectives of the team.
 Communication skill: , I have improved formal communication skill, with the help
of my associates; I have found many options to develop these skills
2.3 Challenges I experienced during internship

 The rain is very difficult to go to the organization.

 It is difficult to communicate with my internship supervisor because for first time I am
new to him so I am afraid of him.
 Internship place and my home are far in this case difficult to arrive on time.
2.4 What is the overall evaluation of the internship experience?

The overall evaluation of the experience was very good because I get different knowledge such
as how to design install and configure network and also as I list different challenge during the
internship.
In my opinion the internship was many advantages for me but in some extent it have difficulty
as I list in the challenge of the internship even in finding the company after that to adapt the
weather condition and to communicate with supervisor in the first time.
I have been reading books, watching online tutorial, practicing to apply my theoretical
knowledge and consulting my associates to overcome difficulties and upgrade myself.

3. Proposed system

3.1Objective of my field practice

The general and specific objectives of the apparent ship are described as follows:-

3.1.1 General objective

The general objective of my summer field practice is to change my theoretical knowledge of

networking to practical skill adapting real world environment in the staff and solving problem
as much as possible by using our educational knowledge. Another objective of this project is to
organize a proper infrastructure of networking,, reliable and easily maintainable data servers
within the Wollo University.

3.1.2 Specific objective

 To understand the general connectivity of the network infrastructure.

 To understand the distribution of network for student labs and offices.
 To understand the coordination of each student lab room and office with ICT network
service for easy controlling .
 To use a proper cable management system which would be easier to enhance or repair
any failure in the future .
 Enables me to compare theoretical ideas learned in the classroom with in the world of
working environment regarding network design and installation.

3.2 Significance of our summer field practice

Significance of my summer field practice can listed as follow:

 Changing theoretical knowledge to practical knowledge.

 Understanding the data center of the KIOT-ICT.
 Acquired additional knowledge on network installation .
 We get work ethics and tolerance with other workers in real world work environment.
 We improve communication and cooperation with our supervisor.
 It motivates me for the future in work environment by increasing our punctuality.
3.3 Methodologies

3.3.1 Data gathering methodology

Primary source

Interview:-I have used this technique by directly contacting the organization employees such as
ICT head and network administrator.

Observation:-by using this technique I observed really what the situation and the general
interconnection of the network is look like.

Secondary source

Document analysis: - I have tried to refer several document which are related to my document
and tried to analyze them.

There are a lot of materials i used and seen during summer field practice for network

3.3.3 my duty in the organization: My major duty in the organization is hardware network
installation of new workshop and lab classes in the university. In addition to this I maintain the
computers that have network problems with other employers.

4. Proposed system design

4.1 design goal

 Expansibility:-new capability to added to the network architecture without major

change to the underline architecture
 Modularity: - The components could be then design and tested in isolation before

being integrated to form a desired architecture. This allows division of work in

software development project.

 Maintainability:-A measure of how easily bug fixes or functional modifications can

be accomplished.
 Reusability:-The ability to use some or all of the aspects of the pre existing software
in other projects.
 Security:-The architecture is able to with stand and resist hostile acts and influences.
 Usability:-The architecture must be usable for its target user/audience. Default
values for the parameters must be chosen so that they are a good choice for the
majority of the users.
4.2 Architecture of my project
The following is the general LAN architecture of the university

Description

The university use wireless network access to reduce budget and to use quality network by
Motorola this Motorola is found in the data center building.

To connect the data center and engineering library use single mode fiber optics cable then to
connect engineering library and informatics library use multi mode fiber optics cable the other
from engineering library to electrical workshop, civil workshop and chemical workshop use UTP
cable. I advice or recommend to the ICT head to use fiber optic cable because fiber optic cable
is more quality cable than UTP cable .In the right side of the data center all are connected by
UTP cat 5 cable

Design description

The KIOT campus have one router it distribute to all the switches. The university uses 24and 48
port switch also it have 3 vlans.

these are:-

 administration vlan (vlan 16):- it use the ip address range from 192.168.16.0 up to
192.168.16.254
 Staff vlan (vlan 8):- it uses the ip address range from 192.168.12.1 up to 192.168.12.254
 Student vlan (vlan 12):- it uses ip address range from 192.168.11.1 up to
192.168.11.254

There are two types of port. These are:-

1. Access port:- it carry different vlan with some range then not access other port and
the data center used almost all access port
2. Trunk port :- it carry different vlans without connection and it can access any port.

The university have five server these are:-ftp server, e-library server, directory server,
file server and register server. But the register system is available only in the university
not work without the university and it haven’t backup. The file server used to save the
university file and it have very high GB hard disk .

To configure all the switch or the router connect the PC and the switch or router by console
cable then by using hyper terminal. Hyper terminal is an application used to configure switch
and router.

5. Conclusion and recommendation

5.1 conclusion

To generalize my field practice I understood the real world work environment what it looks like
what challenges can be appear at work. There are a lot of materials I used and seen during
summer field practice for hardware network installation . Some of that are :- switch ,cat6, wall
outlet, cutter crimper, cable tester ,puncher, RJ45 and also to know how to use the material
that used network installation and which material was needed . Generally for some raised
problems I were taken some solution. For material scarcity we take solution by coordinating
with ICT staff members we decide to maintain and buying enough materials which are required
for network installation and also by making an agreement with network professionals to
arrange free time for these works. For willingness of the worker I tolerate and asking them
politely. For shortage of electric power we asked ICT head in order to help us at work time by
giving generator. For other problems we take different solution approaches as much as
possible. During my summer field practice we see also how to configure switch and router. but I
didn’t configure WIFI network for the campus and vlan .
5.2 Recommendations

During my field practice that we perform in wollo university -ICT (KIOT-ICT) I observe several
limitations within the campus. Based on this I want to recommend that as follow: Their data
center haven’t optimum air condition to cool the server and should have automatic generator
in order to prevent the server from crash when electric power is off and to construct secure
data center to protect data from loosing. Another idea I recommended to them is they should
connect each building with fiber optics cable rather than connecting by cat 6 cable.

I also would like to recommend my department be able to develop giving the internship for six
month to develop practical skill of the students and also provide comfortable learning teaching
situation for the student like arrange lab for each batch, making awareness about network
materials and required tools in computer science to get enough skills.

6. Evaluation and critique

6.1 How did this internship fit your career goals?

Before this internship my career goal is working in maintenance field but after this internship I change
my career goal to work in networking field.

6.2 Discuss your feeling about the value of this internship?

During this internship I feel so happy because I success my aim. In addition to this I get many helpful
experience and knowledge.

6.3 Discuss recommendation for improving the internship?

This internship is basic for all computer science student. i.e information technology,
information science and computer science students. So all this departments don’t stop the
internship because it is very important for students to change theoretical knowledge to
practical , used to decide in what field they work in the future , used to know how they work
together with other workers in the office and they know how they pass challenges or problems
occur in workplace.

6.4 Discuss your strength and area for improvement as self-evaluation?

During this internship I evaluate my self I act different activity as I learn the theoretical
part of the network even if the duration time for learning networking is very further
but I can memorized it and practice for the theoretical part generally I act different
activity during two month internship some of are listed below:-
 I am punctual.
 I progress work respect.
 I understand intermediate supervisor easily during practice time.
 I am help other when they ask me .
