Dolan Falls Preserve

1 Come and explore the Dolan Falls Preserve! It is one of the most
beautiful places in Texas! The preserve is located where a plateau,
a desert, and a brushland meet. A plateau is a raised, flat piece of
land. A desert is a place that gets little or no rain. A brushland is
covered with plants that do not grow very high. The sparkling waters
of the Devils River, Dolan Springs, and Dolan Creek are located in
this unique place. The preserve also has a wide variety of plants and
animals.

2 The Devils River is about fifty miles long and, in some places, it
flows under the ground. There is a wetland along the river. The dirt
is rich and wet. Many plants grow in the fresh water and along the
river banks. Not far from the wetlands, the land turns very dry. Desert
plants, such as cactus, grow in the dry land.

3 Dolan Falls is in the middle of the preserve. It is not far from where
the Devils River and Dolan Creek meet. At Dolan Falls, the water
rushes over eight feet of rocky ledges. To the west of the falls, there
is a forest with many kinds of trees. A pretty bush, called the Texas
Snowbell, thrives along Dolan Creek. The bush blooms in April and May
and has groups of white flowers with five long, thin petals. Its leaves
are shaped like a circle. Under the leaves there are silver hairs.

4 There are many animals that live within the preserve, including
fish, lizards, and turtles. Some birds and butterflies stop along the
Devils River during their migration south for the winter. The black-
capped vireo, which is a type of songbird, and the monarch butterfly
make this trip every year. The black-capped vireo is small. The male
has black feathers on his head, which is how the bird gets its name,

and white around its red eyes, so it looks like it is wearing glasses.
Its wings and back are dark green, but the wings have yellow bars on
them. The females and babies have gray feathers on their head and
brown eyes. Monarchs are orange, black, and white. They cannot live
in cold weather, so millions of them fly up to 3,000 miles to stay warm
during the winter months.

5 Long ago, Native Americans lived on the land that is now the
preserve. Many different groups lived here. Some built their homes
with rocks. They drew pictures on the rocks, which show what their
lives were like. In 1590, the first explorers traveled up the Devils River.
Then, about 300 years later, the first settlers built a ranch along the
river.

6 In 1991, a group called the Nature Conservancy took on the

responsibility of protecting Dolan Falls Preserve. The group believed
that the freshwater springs that flowed into the Devils River and
Dolan Creek needed protection. The group also believed that some
of the plants and animals were endangered. Because there were few
of them left alive, it was important to keep them safe. Today, the
Nature Conservancy keeps track of the number of plants and animals
within the preserve and makes sure that people do not harm them.
The Nature Conservancy limits the number of people who come to the
preserve by keeping it closed most of the time. People are allowed to
visit the preserve on field trips and to help on workdays. As long as it
is protected, Dolan Falls Preserve will always be a place of beauty.
