Why the “Good Book” Isn’t Just Another good Book
OBJECTIVE
In this lesson, we will look at the Bible and reliable history to confirm the Bible as the
inspired Word of God. The following lessons will be based on the Bible, so this lesson will
help us know we can trust the Bible.
We will also see how the Bible came from Bible heroes like Moses and David and ended up
in our hands.
The Scripture (Bible) was inspired by God. What does that mean? Glad you asked. It
literally means the Bible is “God breathed.” It’s as if God breathed His life into the Bible,
making the Bible you have in your hands the very Word of God.
Men may have written the Bible, but ____________ authored the Bible.
Prophecies are one of the greatest proofs that the Bible is not just another good book. All
these prophecies were made and fulfilled in and by Jesus Christ:
4
Student Edition
Could these prophecies have just been good guesses? The probability of one man fulfilling
just eight prophecies, like the ones above, is _________________.
T or F The Bible is remarkably specific, even naming people before they were born.
It’s amazing to realize the Bible was written by shepherds, kings, prisoners, pastors,
prophets, fishermen, tax collectors, poets, musicians, etc. And these men were separated by
a period of 1600 years.
Think about one man beginning to write a book and nearly forty others trying to finish it
sixteen centuries later. If it wasn’t the Word of God, it would be filled with contradictions and
inconsistencies. Yet the Bible is miraculously consistent all throughout because the Bible is the
Word of God.
Both Old and New Testaments were originally written without _________________ divisions.
What’s remarkable about the Bible is it reveals the ____________ of its heroes.
5
Student Edition
Vocabulary lesson: The word “canon” means “reed”; the reed was used as a
measuring rod and implies “standard”; later the term meant “an official accepted list of
books.” The canon is the official list of books included in the Bible.
You probably like tests at school as much as a cat likes to swim, but there needed to be
some tests to make sure the books that found their way into the Bible belonged there.
Match the question below with the answer that best completes it.
Once the books passed the tests, they were included in the New Testament canon.
The New Testament never quotes anything after the book of _____________.
Jesus makes the statement, “From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zecharias” (Luke
11:51). This is similar to us saying, “From Genesis to Malachi.”
When God ceased speaking after the Book of Malachi was written, the Old Testament
canon was ________________.
1) closed until further notice 2) closed for good 3) closed on Labor Day
The major test of a New Testament book was its apostolic _________________.
T or F The New Testament was written and circulated while some of the apostles were
still alive.

From Them to Us
Just as there were tests to determine what books should be included in the Canon, there
were also very stringent rules for scribes copying the Scripture. In his book, New Evidence
that Demands a Verdict, Josh McDowell lists the following:
Conclusion
From the beginning of this lesson, we have seen that sources both inside and outside the
Bible confirm the “good book” we have in our hands and in our hearts as the inspired
Word of God.
We’ve seen how the Bible was written by so many men, and yet without contradiction. And
we see how it was preserved and saved for us to be able to read the Word of God in our
day.
Since the Bible is the Word of God, we can trust its principles and commandments with our
very souls. And further, we can trust the One who authored it.

2 Who is Jesus
OBJECTIVE
In our previous lesson, we learned we can trust the Bible as the Word of God. In this lesson,
we will discover what the Bible has to say about Jesus. Who was He and why did He
come? As we call the Old and New Testaments to testify, we will compare their testimony to
discover Jesus as nothing less than the almighty God manifest in the flesh.
Isaiah 9:6 reads, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government
shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty
God, The everlasting __________________, The Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 40:3 reads, “Prepare ye the way of the _______________, make straight in the desert
a highway for our God.”
Micah 5:2: “’But thou ________________ Ephratah, though thou be little among the
thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel;
whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”
In Acts 20:28, we are admonished to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased
with His ___________________ blood.
The I AM
John 8:24: “I said therefore unto you, if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your
sins.”
John 8:28: “When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he….”
John 18:4-6: “Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth,
and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto
them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he
had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.”
John 8:58: “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”
Mark 6:50: “For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them,
and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.”
Mark 6:50 is even more powerful than meets the eye. Jesus was more than just a man
walking on the water to rescue scared-to-death disciples in the middle of Hurricane Helga.
He literally said to them, “Be not afraid: the I AM is here.”
Romans 8:9: “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God
dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
Ephesians 3:17: “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and
grounded in love,”
I Corinthians 3:16: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God
dwelleth in you?”
Revelation 1:8: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,
which is, and which was, and which is to come, the __________________.”
I Timothy 3:16: “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was
manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles,
believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
9
Student Edition
John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God.”
John 1:18: “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the
bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”
John 14:8-9: “Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith
unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he
that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?”
Colossians 1:15, “Who [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every
creature:”
Jesus is the only person in history with a dual nature: He was both God and man. When
the Bible refers to the Father, it’s referring to God as Spirit. When it refers to the Son, it’s
referring to God in the flesh.
Was born a baby (Luke 2:7) Existed from eternity (Micah 5:2)
Was tempted by the devil (Luke 4:2) Cast out devils (Matthew 12:28)
Was hungry (Matthew 4:2) Was the bread of life (John 6:35)
Slept in the storm (Mark 4:38) Calmed the storm (Mark 4:39-41)
Was our sacrifice (Hebrews 10:10) Was our high priest (Hebrews 2:17)

Conclusion
From the beginning of this lesson, we have heard the testimony of the Old and New
Testaments. We’ve heard the prophets, and we’ve heard Jesus Himself identify Himself as the
Almighty God manifest in the flesh.
The beautiful part about knowing Jesus as God manifest in flesh is knowing why He came
in flesh: to save us from our sins. He so loved us. He esteemed the value of our souls more
precious than the value of His own life. At Calvary, Jesus gave us the greatest love story ever
told.

__________________.
Vocabulary lesson: Our sin nature means we are born with a tendency toward sin.
Romans 3:23 teaches us that ____________________ have sinned and come short of the glory
of God (missed the mark).
Repentance
Vocabulary lesson: Re pent ance (rîpen’-tns) n. 1) Turning from sin and turning toward God;
2) change of heart; 3) recognition of sins and confessing sins to God.
Here are a few of the biblical commands given to us to repent of our sins.
God is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
a) Acts 2:38 b) Matthew 4:17 c) II Peter 3:9 d) Luke 13:3 e) Acts 17:30
13
Student Edition
How Do I Repent?
I John 1:8-9 tells both what we should do, and what God will do when we repent.
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.”
Repentance involves two actions: we must confess and ___________________ our sins.
Conviction will always draw you closer to God; condemnation will always drive you farther
from God. Once you believe God can save you from your sins, conviction will lead you to
repentance.
Acts 2:38 teaches us that repentance and water baptism in Jesus’ name work together to
remit our sins. Water baptism is only effective once we have repented of our sins. If we
haven’t yet repented, we have only gotten wet.
Conclusion
From the beginning of this lesson, we learned what sin is, and where it came from. We saw
that we are born with a sin nature. That’s the bad news. But we can be born again. That’s
exceeding good news.
14 We learned what repentance is, and how we can repent. Now the next step is to repent.

4 Baptism in Jesus’
Name
OBJECTIVE
In the previous lesson, we learned about our need to repent of our sins and God’s
willingness to forgive us. In this lesson, we will discover the gift God has given us in baptism
and why we must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Get ready. On this ride, you may
get a little wet.
According to the Bible, when we are baptized, Jesus literally dismisses, cancels, washes
away, remits, erases our _____________________________.
Everywhere someone was baptized in the New Testament church, the name of Jesus Christ
was called over them at their baptism.
16
Student Edition
According to Mark 16, “He that _________________________ and is baptized shall be saved.”
Bible Fact: There are at least five references in the New Testament that link baptism in water
and baptism in the Spirit together as a part of our new birth. These references establish “born
of water” as baptism and “born of the Spirit” as receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Baptism by Immersion
Vocabulary Lesson: The word “baptism” comes from the word “baptize,” which means to
dip, dunk, or immerse. Everyone in the New Testament was immersed in water when they were
baptized.
According to Matthew 3, when Jesus was baptized, He came ___________________ the water.
According to Acts 8:38-39, ______________________ and the Ethiopian eunuch both went
down into the water.
According to Romans 6:4 and Colossians 2:12, we are _______________________ with Christ
in baptism.
History Lesson: According to the World Book Encyclopedia, “At first all baptism was by
complete immersion” (vol. 1, p.651). And the Catholic Encyclopedia states, “In the early
centuries, all were baptized by immersion in streams, pools, and baptisteries” (vol. 2, p.263).
Immersion was not convenient after the Catholic Church instituted infant baptism; thus the mode
was changed to sprinkling. (See Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th ed., vol. 3, pp.365-66).
Conclusion
In this lesson, we watched as Penelope heard the gospel and responded by repenting and
having her sins washed away in baptism. We learned the beauty of baptism and the necessity
to be baptized in water by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:9 refers to the Holy Ghost as the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ. When you
receive the Holy Ghost, you receive the very Spirit of God into your life.
T or F The Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit are the same.
At Jesus’ birth, the Holy Ghost was the ____________________ (Matthew 1:20).
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh;
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream
dreams, your young men shall see visions.”
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much
more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”
“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is
mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with
the Holy Ghost, and with fire.”

“For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will
pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.”
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will
take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”
a) Matthew 3:11 b) Joel 2:28 c) Isaiah 44:3 d) Luke 11:13 e) Ezekiel 36:26
Bible Fact: One of the earliest prophecies above was written over five hundred years before
the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Ghost was first poured out. What God promises, He
performs.
I Peter 1:12 tells us that the _________________________ desire to know more about receiving
the gift of the Holy Ghost.
The angels who live in the presence of God would love to know what it’s like to be redeemed
by His blood and filled with His Spirit.
T or F The gift of the Holy Ghost was poured out on all groups of people in the New
Testament.
In Acts 2, the Jews received the Holy Ghost; in Acts 8, the Samaritans received the Holy Ghost;
in Acts 10, the Gentiles received the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is universal because the Holy
Ghost is for everyone.

receive the Holy Ghost.

Suffice it to say, there is nothing like receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost!
According to Luke 11:13, we simply ________________________ God for the gift of the

Conclusion
In this lesson, we learned what the Bible teaches about being born of the Spirit. We also
learned the many benefits that come when we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
We also learned the Bible evidence that we have received the Holy Ghost is speaking with
other tongues. Now that we’ve learned about the Holy Ghost, it’s time to be sure we have
received the gift of the Holy Ghost.

6 Your Relationship
with God
OBJECTIVE
In the previous lesson, we learned the great lengths God went to so He could have a
relationship with us. In this lesson, we will see how we can have a relationship with Him.
We will learn about prayer, fasting, Bible reading, and worship. And we will begin, or
continue, to walk with God.
Prayer
Vocabulary Lesson: Prayer is defined as a reverent petition to God; the act of making
such a petition; an earnest request.
Philippians 4:6 (NIV), “Do not be anxious about anything, but in _______________________,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Forms of Prayer
1) Establish a consistent pattern of prayer. Perhaps no Internet, breakfast, video games, etc.
before prayer
2) Have and be a prayer partner.
3) Involve yourself in the prayer ministry of your church prayer chain, focused times of prayer,
pre-service prayer, prayer during service, prayer at the altar, etc.
4) Keep an updated prayer list. As people ask you to pray, update your list, then follow up to
see what God has done.
5) Pray through your youth group or church directory each month. On day 1, pray for the
people whose last name begins with “A.” On day 2, “B.” On day 3, “C,” etc.
Fasting
Fasting is not designed to change God; it’s designed to change us. We don’t twist God’s arm
into doing what we want by fasting; we draw closer to God through fasting.
Types of Fasts

Student Edition
5) If you are medically unable to fast meals, fast forms of entertainment such as music,
social media, DVDs, etc.
6) During your fast, spend your mealtimes in prayer and reading your Bible.
Bible Reading
Psalm 119:11, “Thy Word have I hid in mine _________________ that I might not sin
against thee.”
Psalm 119:97, “Oh how love I Thy law! It is my meditation _____________ the day.”
Psalm 119:105, “Thy Word is a _____________ unto my feet, and a _____________ unto
my path.”
Job 23:12, “I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary

1) Follow a Bible reading program. The Sunday School Division produces them, and
there are several apps for smartphones and tablets.
2) If you are just beginning to read the Bible, start with a program/app that takes you
through the New Testament in one year.
3) Take notes and write down questions as you’re reading.
4) Read in a version you can understand and your pastor recommends.
5) Enjoy the Bible. It is God’s love letter to you.

Loyalty
Positive talk about your church will _________________ others, while negative talk about your
church will drive them away.
Conclusion
In this lesson, we learned about our relationship to our church. We learned our church
blesses us by providing a place for us to find salvation, grow as disciples, worship,
fellowship, and exercise our ministry. We learned we can bless our church through our
attendance, evangelism, talents, giving, and loyalty.
So be sure to bless your local church and local pastor. You will see that your church and
pastor bless you in more ways than time could tell. That may be one reason God gives us
eternity.
