1 The BiblE
Why the “Good Book” Isn’t Just Another good Book

OBJECTIVE
In this lesson, we will look at the Bible and reliable history to confirm the Bible as the
inspired Word of God. The following lessons will be based on the Bible, so this lesson will
help us know we can trust the Bible.

We will also see how the Bible came from Bible heroes like Moses and David and ended up
in our hands.

The Bible Claims to Be the Word of God

II Timothy 3:16 teaches, “All Scripture is given by _____________________ of God….”

1) perspiration 2) indigestion 3) inspiration

The Scripture (Bible) was inspired by God. What does that mean? Glad you asked. It
literally means the Bible is “God breathed.” It’s as if God breathed His life into the Bible,
making the Bible you have in your hands the very Word of God.

Men may have written the Bible, but ____________ authored the Bible.

1) God 2) just some guys 3) Adam and Eve

Prophecies are one of the greatest proofs that the Bible is not just another good book. All
these prophecies were made and fulfilled in and by Jesus Christ:

Just to name a few…

Jesus would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23).
Jesus would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:6).
Jesus would be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12; Matthew 26:15).
Jesus would be pierced (Zechariah 12:10; John 19:34).
Jesus’ executioners would gamble for His garments (Psalm 22:18; Matthew 27:35).
None of Jesus’ bones would be broken (Psalm 34:20; John 19:36).
Jesus would be buried with the rich (Isaiah 53:9; Matthew 27:57-60).
Jesus would rise from the grave (Psalm 16:10; Matthew 28:5-6).

4
Student Edition

Could these prophecies have just been good guesses? The probability of one man fulfilling
just eight prophecies, like the ones above, is _________________.

1) 1 in 100 2) 1 in 1,000 3) 1 in 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

The prophets weren’t just guessing. They were inspired by God.

History Confirms the Bible as the Word of God

The Bible is remarkably accurate in its history.

T or F The Bible was written on three different continents.

T or F The Bible was written by nearly forty different men.

T or F The Bible was written over a period of sixteen centuries.

T or F The Bible was written in three different languages.

T or F The Bible was written in several different genres.

T or F The Bible is remarkably specific, even naming people before they were born.

It’s amazing to realize the Bible was written by shepherds, kings, prisoners, pastors,
prophets, fishermen, tax collectors, poets, musicians, etc. And these men were separated by
a period of 1600 years.

Think about one man beginning to write a book and nearly forty others trying to finish it
sixteen centuries later. If it wasn’t the Word of God, it would be filled with contradictions and
inconsistencies. Yet the Bible is miraculously consistent all throughout because the Bible is the
Word of God.

Both Old and New Testaments were originally written without _________________ divisions.

1) chapter 2) verse 3) chapter and verse

What’s remarkable about the Bible is it reveals the ____________ of its heroes.

1) sins 2) hair color 3) shoe size

What to Include in the Bible

The question concerning what to include in the Bible is called _____________.

1) New York City 2) Kansas City 3) canonicity

5
Student Edition

Vocabulary lesson: The word “canon” means “reed”; the reed was used as a
measuring rod and implies “standard”; later the term meant “an official accepted list of
books.” The canon is the official list of books included in the Bible.

You probably like tests at school as much as a cat likes to swim, but there needed to be
some tests to make sure the books that found their way into the Bible belonged there.

Tests for Inclusion in the New Testament

Match the question below with the answer that best completes it.

Was the book written by a __________ of God? acts

Was the writer confirmed by __________ of God? story
Did the message tell the __________ about God? people
Does it come with the __________ of God? man
Was it accepted by the __________ of God? power

Once the books passed the tests, they were included in the New Testament canon.

How Do We Know We’re Not Missing Books?

The Old Testament

The New Testament never quotes anything after the book of _____________.

1) Genesis 2) Malachi 3) Psalms

Jesus makes the statement, “From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zecharias” (Luke
11:51). This is similar to us saying, “From Genesis to Malachi.”

When God ceased speaking after the Book of Malachi was written, the Old Testament
canon was ________________.

1) closed until further notice 2) closed for good 3) closed on Labor Day

The New Testament

The major test of a New Testament book was its apostolic _________________.

1) music 2) offering plates 3) authority

T or F The New Testament was written and circulated while some of the apostles were
still alive.

6
Student Edition

_____________________ was the last book of the New Testament canon.

1) II John 2) III John 3) Revelation

From Them to Us

Just as there were tests to determine what books should be included in the Canon, there
were also very stringent rules for scribes copying the Scripture. In his book, New Evidence
that Demands a Verdict, Josh McDowell lists the following:

• Each sheet was measured with exact guidelines.

• Lettering had exact rules and shapes; no two letters were allowed to touch; all letters
were spaced
by exactly a hair.
• Not a single letter was to be written from memory; every word was to be looked at and
pronounced aloud before writing.
• To write the name of the Lord, the pen had to be cleaned, the scribe consecrated, and
he was not to respond to a distraction even if a king addressed him.
• If more than three marks had to be corrected, the entire sheet of parchment was to be
condemned.
• At the end of each sheet, every word and letter was to be counted. The scribes knew
the exact middle word, even letter, in the book.
• At the end of the fifth century, the scribes worked in the presence of a proofreader who
checked each word before proceeding.

Conclusion

From the beginning of this lesson, we have seen that sources both inside and outside the
Bible confirm the “good book” we have in our hands and in our hearts as the inspired
Word of God.

We’ve seen how the Bible was written by so many men, and yet without contradiction. And
we see how it was preserved and saved for us to be able to read the Word of God in our
day.

Since the Bible is the Word of God, we can trust its principles and commandments with our
very souls. And further, we can trust the One who authored it.

2 Who is Jesus
OBJECTIVE
In our previous lesson, we learned we can trust the Bible as the Word of God. In this lesson,
we will discover what the Bible has to say about Jesus. Who was He and why did He
come? As we call the Old and New Testaments to testify, we will compare their testimony to
discover Jesus as nothing less than the almighty God manifest in the flesh.

The Old Testament’s Testimony

Isaiah 7:14: “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall
conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

The name “Immanuel” literally means, “_____________ with us.”

1) The Son of God 2) Gramps 3) God

Isaiah 9:6 reads, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government
shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty
God, The everlasting __________________, The Prince of Peace.”

1) Father 2) Monarch 3) Really good guy

Isaiah 40:3 reads, “Prepare ye the way of the _______________, make straight in the desert
a highway for our God.”

1) prophet 2) Spirit 3) LORD

Micah 5:2: “’But thou ________________ Ephratah, though thou be little among the
thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel;
whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”

1) Bethlehem 2) Sinai 3) Maher shalal hash baz

The New Testament’s Testimony

In John 20:28, Thomas was so overwhelmed when He realized Jesus really had risen, he
called Jesus, “my Lord and my God.”

In Acts 20:28, we are admonished to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased
with His ___________________ blood.

8 1) Son’s 2) nephew’s 3) own

Student Edition

The I AM

T or F Jesus attributed that revered, covenant name of God to Himself.

John 8:24: “I said therefore unto you, if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your
sins.”

John 8:28: “When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he….”

John 18:4-6: “Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth,
and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto
them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he
had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.”

John 8:58: “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”

Mark 6:50: “For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them,
and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.”

Mark 6:50 is even more powerful than meets the eye. Jesus was more than just a man
walking on the water to rescue scared-to-death disciples in the middle of Hurricane Helga.
He literally said to them, “Be not afraid: the I AM is here.”

God and Christ

Several times, the titles God and Christ are interchanged.

Romans 8:9: “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God
dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

Ephesians 3:17: “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and
grounded in love,”

I Corinthians 3:16: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God
dwelleth in you?”

Revelation 1:8: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,
which is, and which was, and which is to come, the __________________.”

1) Strong one 2) Shiny one 3) Almighty

God Manifest in the Flesh

I Timothy 3:16: “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was
manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles,
believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
9
Student Edition

T or F This passage applies to more men than Jesus Christ.

John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God.”

John 1:18: “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the
bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

John 14:8-9: “Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith
unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he
that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?”

Colossians 1:15, “Who [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every
creature:”

Jesus’ Dual Nature

Jesus’ mother was _______________ and His father was _________________.

1) Mary, Joseph 2) Mary, God 3) Martha, Stewart

Jesus is the only person in history with a dual nature: He was both God and man. When
the Bible refers to the Father, it’s referring to God as Spirit. When it refers to the Son, it’s
referring to God in the flesh.

JESUS AS A MAN (SON) JESUS AS GOD (FATHER)

Was born a baby (Luke 2:7) Existed from eternity (Micah 5:2)

Was tempted by the devil (Luke 4:2) Cast out devils (Matthew 12:28)

Was hungry (Matthew 4:2) Was the bread of life (John 6:35)

Was thirsty (John 19:28) Gave living water (John 4:14)

Grew weary (John 4:6) Gave rest (Matthew 11:28)

Slept in the storm (Mark 4:38) Calmed the storm (Mark 4:39-41)

Prayed (Luke 22:41) Answered prayer (John 14:14)

Was our sacrifice (Hebrews 10:10) Was our high priest (Hebrews 2:17)

Conclusion

From the beginning of this lesson, we have heard the testimony of the Old and New
Testaments. We’ve heard the prophets, and we’ve heard Jesus Himself identify Himself as the
Almighty God manifest in the flesh.

The beautiful part about knowing Jesus as God manifest in flesh is knowing why He came
in flesh: to save us from our sins. He so loved us. He esteemed the value of our souls more
precious than the value of His own life. At Calvary, Jesus gave us the greatest love story ever
told.

3 Sin & Repentance

OBJECTIVE
In this lesson, we will discover what sin is and where it came from. We’ll also learn what
repentance is and how we can have our sins forgiven through repentance. This lesson starts
with bad news but ends with good news.

What Is Sin?

One of the definitions for sin is “missing the _____________________.”

1) bus 2) flight 3) mark

In our Christian walk, it is not good enough to be _____________________.

1) good enough 2) 6’3” 3) tall, dark, and handsome

REFERENCE DEFINITION

Proverbs 14:21
Proverbs 21:4
James 4:17
I John 3:4
I John 5:17

WHERE DID SIN COME FROM?

The First Fall

_____________________ fell from Heaven after sin got in his heart (Isaiah 14:12-17).

1) Lucifer 2) The devil 3) Um, they’re the same guy

12
Student Edition

The Second Fall

The first fall took place in Heaven; the second fall took place in the Garden of
__________________.

1) Gethsemane 2) Eden 3) Many gardens

Genesis 2:16-17 points out there is much more ________________________ than

____________________ in living for God.

1) privilege, prohibition 2) prohibition, privilege 3) hair spray, hair gel

Vocabulary lesson: Our sin nature means we are born with a tendency toward sin.

In Psalm 51:5, David taught us that we are born _________________________.

1) young 2) sinners 3) perfect

Romans 3:23 teaches us that ____________________ have sinned and come short of the glory
of God (missed the mark).

1) some 2) 3.14% 3) all

Repentance

Vocabulary lesson: Re pent ance (rîpen’-tns) n. 1) Turning from sin and turning toward God;
2) change of heart; 3) recognition of sins and confessing sins to God.

Why Should I Repent?

Here are a few of the biblical commands given to us to repent of our sins.

Match the command below with the correct scripture reference.

“Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’”

Jesus taught, “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”

“Then Peter said unto them, ‘repent and be baptized….’”

God is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

God “now commandeth all men everywhere to repent.”

a) Acts 2:38 b) Matthew 4:17 c) II Peter 3:9 d) Luke 13:3 e) Acts 17:30

13
Student Edition

How Do I Repent?

I John 1:8-9 tells both what we should do, and what God will do when we repent.
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.”

Repentance involves two actions: we must confess and ___________________ our sins.

1) forsake 2) forsake 3) forsake

When we repent, God will _____________________ us and cleanse us.

1) forgive 2) forgive 3) forgive

Repentance is as simple as confess and forsake; be forgiven and cleansed.

Conviction and Condemnation

Conviction will always draw you closer to God; condemnation will always drive you farther
from God. Once you believe God can save you from your sins, conviction will lead you to
repentance.

Repentance and Salvation

Where does repentance fit with biblical salvation?

Repentance is only the beginning, but repentance is ___________________ the beginning.

1) sometimes 2) never 3) always

Repentance identifies us with Jesus’ ____________________.

1) miracles 2) death 3) burial

Acts 2:38 teaches us that repentance and water baptism in Jesus’ name work together to
remit our sins. Water baptism is only effective once we have repented of our sins. If we
haven’t yet repented, we have only gotten wet.

Conclusion

From the beginning of this lesson, we learned what sin is, and where it came from. We saw
that we are born with a sin nature. That’s the bad news. But we can be born again. That’s
exceeding good news.

14 We learned what repentance is, and how we can repent. Now the next step is to repent.

4 Baptism in Jesus’
Name
OBJECTIVE
In the previous lesson, we learned about our need to repent of our sins and God’s
willingness to forgive us. In this lesson, we will discover the gift God has given us in baptism
and why we must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Get ready. On this ride, you may
get a little wet.

Baptism’s Beauty and Necessity

II Corinthians 5:17 reads, “If any man be in Christ, he is a new ______________________.”

1) creature 2) SUV 3) recovering alcoholic

According to the Bible, when we are baptized, Jesus literally dismisses, cancels, washes
away, remits, erases our _____________________________.

1) baby brother 2) sins 3) grass stains

Baptism identifies us with Jesus’ _____________________________ (Romans 6:4).

1) death 2) manger 3) burial

Baptism applies Jesus’ ______________________ and identifies us as one of His own

(Galatians 3:27).

1) name 2) rugged good looks 3) carpentry skills

Everywhere someone was baptized in the New Testament church, the name of Jesus Christ
was called over them at their baptism.

Baptism and New Birth

According to Mark 16, “He that _________________________ and is baptized shall be saved.”

1) believeth 2) brusheth his teeth 3) behaveth like a good person

According to Acts 2:38, we must “______________________ and be baptized….”

1) mow the lawn 2) sing 3) repent

According to John 3:5, we must be “born of water and of ________________________.”

1) more water 2) even more water 3) the Spirit

Bible Fact: There are at least five references in the New Testament that link baptism in water
and baptism in the Spirit together as a part of our new birth. These references establish “born
of water” as baptism and “born of the Spirit” as receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Baptism by Immersion

Vocabulary Lesson: The word “baptism” comes from the word “baptize,” which means to
dip, dunk, or immerse. Everyone in the New Testament was immersed in water when they were
baptized.

According to Matthew 3, when Jesus was baptized, He came ___________________ the water.

1) near to 2) up out of 3) just above

According to Acts 8:38-39, ______________________ and the Ethiopian eunuch both went
down into the water.

1) Philip 2) Adam 3) Noah

According to Romans 6:4 and Colossians 2:12, we are _______________________ with Christ
in baptism.

1) sprinkled 2) moistened 3) buried

History Lesson: According to the World Book Encyclopedia, “At first all baptism was by
complete immersion” (vol. 1, p.651). And the Catholic Encyclopedia states, “In the early
centuries, all were baptized by immersion in streams, pools, and baptisteries” (vol. 2, p.263).
Immersion was not convenient after the Catholic Church instituted infant baptism; thus the mode
was changed to sprinkling. (See Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th ed., vol. 3, pp.365-66).

Conclusion

In this lesson, we watched as Penelope heard the gospel and responded by repenting and
having her sins washed away in baptism. We learned the beauty of baptism and the necessity
to be baptized in water by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ.

5 The Holy Ghost

OBJECTIVE
In the previous lesson, we learned about the beauty and necessity of being born of water—
baptized in Jesus’ name. In this lesson, we will discover how we can be born of the Spirit
—filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Who Is the Holy Ghost?

The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of _________________________ (Romans 8:9).

1) God 2) Christ 3) both

Romans 8:9 refers to the Holy Ghost as the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ. When you
receive the Holy Ghost, you receive the very Spirit of God into your life.

The Holy Ghost is also referred to as the _______________________ (John 14:16-18).

1) Consoler 2) Conditioner 3) Comforter

T or F The Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit are the same.

At Jesus’ birth, the Holy Ghost was the ____________________ (Matthew 1:20).

1) Father 2) Butler 3) Fourth wise man

The Holy Ghost and Salvation

Match the verse below with the correct scripture reference.

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh;
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream
dreams, your young men shall see visions.”

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much
more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”

“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is
mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with
the Holy Ghost, and with fire.”

18
Student Edition

“For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will
pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.”

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will
take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”

a) Matthew 3:11 b) Joel 2:28 c) Isaiah 44:3 d) Luke 11:13 e) Ezekiel 36:26

Bible Fact: One of the earliest prophecies above was written over five hundred years before
the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Ghost was first poured out. What God promises, He
performs.

T or F The Holy Ghost is essential for our salvation.

The Holy Ghost identifies us with Jesus’ _____________________________.

1) death 2) burial 3) resurrection

I Peter 1:12 tells us that the _________________________ desire to know more about receiving
the gift of the Holy Ghost.

1) Pharisees 2) Sadducees 3) angels

The angels who live in the presence of God would love to know what it’s like to be redeemed
by His blood and filled with His Spirit.

T or F The gift of the Holy Ghost was poured out on all groups of people in the New
Testament.

In Acts 2, the Jews received the Holy Ghost; in Acts 8, the Samaritans received the Holy Ghost;
in Acts 10, the Gentiles received the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is universal because the Holy
Ghost is for everyone.

The Benefits of Receiving the Holy Ghost

Suffice it to say, there is nothing like receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost!

How Do We Receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost

According to Acts 2:38, we must ___________________________ before we are filled with

the Holy Ghost.

1) be perfect 2) repent 3) wear patent leather shoes

According to Luke 11:13, we simply ________________________ God for the gift of the
Holy Ghost.

1) ask 2) beg and plead with 3) bargain and barter with

T or F God wants to fill you with the Holy Ghost more than you want to be filled.

How Do We Know We Have Received the Holy Ghost?

There are several references in the New Testament where someone received the gift of the
Holy Ghost. Here are just three of them.

Vocabulary Lesson: A historical normative relates to an ideal standard or mode. Since

there is no passage that reads, “Thou must speak in other tongues,” the Scriptures establish a
historical normative of speaking in other tongues when somebody is filled with the gift of the
Holy Ghost.

Conclusion

In this lesson, we learned what the Bible teaches about being born of the Spirit. We also
learned the many benefits that come when we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

We also learned the Bible evidence that we have received the Holy Ghost is speaking with
other tongues. Now that we’ve learned about the Holy Ghost, it’s time to be sure we have
received the gift of the Holy Ghost.

6 Your Relationship
with God
OBJECTIVE
In the previous lesson, we learned the great lengths God went to so He could have a
relationship with us. In this lesson, we will see how we can have a relationship with Him.
We will learn about prayer, fasting, Bible reading, and worship. And we will begin, or
continue, to walk with God.

Prayer

Vocabulary Lesson: Prayer is defined as a reverent petition to God; the act of making
such a petition; an earnest request.

Simply stated, prayer is _________________________ with God.

1) pleading 2) talking 3) playing tennis

We are told in I Thessalonians to pray without __________________________.

1) ceasing 2) opening our eyes 3) eating

Philippians 4:6 (NIV), “Do not be anxious about anything, but in _______________________,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

1) the really small things 2) the really big things 3) everything

Forms of Prayer

Match the form of prayer below with the correct definition.

The act of petitioning God or praying on behalf of another person or group.

A cry for mercy

Something requested; the act of making such a request

The act of reflection

Thankfulness shown for goodness given

a) supplication b) petition c) intercession d) thanksgiving e) meditation
