SCIENCE
CALCULATE YOUR WATER FOOTPRINT
Fresh water is vital to life, but as the world’s population grows, so does its use of water. It
takes water – a lot of it – to produce food, house hold works, to make energy and to
manufacture consumer products. This is what’s known as virtual water and it’s
important to do an assessment of water patterns at different levels of water use.
To calculate this use of virtual water at different levels is called Water Footprint.
The concept created by Dr. Arjen Hoekstra, Water Footprints is an environmental
indicator, to understand the water use patterns, from the individual level to all the way to
the national level. They also account for the amount of water contaminated during
manufacturing and production.
This Summer Vacation is a perfect time to calculate, WHAT’S YOUR WATER
FOOTPRINT?
So, let’s do some research and calculate the daily use of water by us, as an individual and
then for our entire family. Do not be surprised when you come to the conclusion at the end,
rather discuss the issue with your parents and guardians and plan more effective use of
water measure to reduce the wastage.
The below questionnaire will help you come to calculate your water footprint for a day.
i. How many people are there in your house?
ii. How long do you take to brush your teeth?
a. 0-3 mins without tap on 3L / 5-10 mins without tap on 5L
b. 0-3 mins with tap on 15L / 5-10 mins with tap on 30L
iii. We use water saving toilets ( 6L –9L per flush )
iv. I shower ____ times in a day.
a. 0-5 mins 20L
b. 6-10 mins 40L
v. Watered flower pots and lawn 20L – 40L
vi. Washed cycle / Motor bike / Car 5L – 20L
vii. Washed dishes for the day 20L – 40L
viii. Mopping the floor 5L – 10L
ix. Washed clothes for the day 40L – 80L
x. I drink ____ L of water a day.
xi. Intake of fruits and vegetables throughout the day 20L – 60L
xii. Intake of other food items 60L-100L
xiii. Leaking tape in the house 10L – 30L
xiv. Playing with water 5L -20L
You are required to creatively present the Water Footprint of yourself and your family
neatly in white A4 sheet .
SOCIAL STUDIES
