The Olympic Games are the world’s leading

sports event. Athletes from more than 200
countries compete in them. The Olympics
include the Summer Games and the Winter
Games. Each is held in a different country once
every four years. Until the early 1990s the
Summer and Winter Games were held in the
same year. Today they are separated by two
years.
The Olympic Games were first held in ancient
Greece at a site called Olympia. The ancient
Greek Games lasted until 393 ce. The
Olympics were revived in the late 1800s. The
Games that began then are called the modern

ESL Pals 2 General English

 GRAMMAR: USED TO

Read the theory about the use of “used to” and then complete the tasks.

We use ‘used to’ + infinitive to talk about a past situation which is no longer true. It tells
us that there was a repeated action / state in the past which has now changed.
Example: She used to be a tennis player when she was younger.
He used to work in Amsterdam. Now he works in London.
When we use this structure with the word ‘did’ - there is a slight change.

Example: Did you use to eat meat when you were younger?
I didn’t use to sleep well, but I do now.
She didn’t use to go to class at university.

Can you see what the small change is? The word ‘used’ changes to ‘use’.
