Exercise 1-C Falling in Love

The document discusses the mysterious nature of love and how it cannot be controlled or reasoned with, as love has its own season and reasons for coming and going. It notes that when love leaves, there is nothing one can do to make it stay or get answers, and advises accepting love as a freely given gift when it is there rather than desperately trying to hold on to it when it moves away. The overall message is that love will come again if one keeps their heart open and embraces love when it arrives while letting it go freely when it chooses to leave.

Exercise 1-C FALLING IN LOVE It is a mystery why we fell in love. It is a mystery how it happens. It is a mystery when it comes.

It is a mystery why some love grows and it is a mystery why some love fails. You can analyze this mystery and look for reasons and causes, but you will never do anymore than life out of the experience. Just as life itself is more than the sum of the bones and muscles and electrical impulses in the body, love is more than the sum of the interests and attractions and commonalities that two people share. And just as life itself is a gift that comes and goes in its own time, so too, the coming of love must be taken as an unfathomable gift that cannot be questioned in its ways. Sometimes, hopefully at least once in your life the gift of love will come to you in full flower, and you will take hold of it and celebrate it in all inexpressible beauty. This is the dream we all share. More often it will come and take hold of you, celebrate you for a brief moment, then move. When this happens to young people, they too often try to grasp the love and hold it to them, refusing to see that it is a gift that is freely given and a gift that just as freely, moves away. When they fall out of love, or the person they love feels the spirit of love leaving, then try desperately to claim the love that is lost rather than accepting the gift for it was, then moving on. They want answers where there are no answers. They want to know what is wrong in them that make the other person no longer love them, or they try to get their lover to change, thinking that if some small things were different, love would bloom again. They blame their circumstances and say that if they go far away and start a new life together, their love will grow. Remember this, and keep it to your heart. Love has its own season, and its own reason for coming and going. You cannot bribe or coerce it, or reason it into staying. You can only embrace it when it arrives and give it away when it comes to you. But if it chooses to leave from your heart of your lover, there is nothing you can do and there is nothing you should do. Love always has been and always will be a mystery. Be glad that it came to live for a moment in your life. IF YOU KEEP YOUR HEART OPEN IT WILL COME AGAIN.

Associate from those you can learn. Let friendly relations be a school of erudition, and conversation, refined teaching. Make your friends your teachers and blend the usefulness of learning with the pleasure of conversation. Enjoy the company of people of understanding. What you say will b rewarded with applause; what you hear, with earning. What draws us to others, ordinarily, is our own interest, and here that interest is ennobled. The prudent frequent the homes of courtly heroes: theaters of heroism, not palaces of vanity. Some are renowned for their learning and good judgment: oracles of all greatness through example and friendship. Those who accompany they form a courtly academy gallant discretion and wisdom. FIGHTING FORCE Undertake the easy though were difficult, and the difficult as though it were easy, so as not to grow overconfident or discouraged. To avoid doing something, you need only considerate done. But diligence is impossibility. In moments of great danger, dont even think, simply act. Dont dwell on the difficulties. HEAVEN ON EARTH In heaven all is contentment, in hell as is sorrow, and on earth, which is between, we find both. We live between two extremes and partake of both. Luck changes: not all is happiness and all is adversity. This life is in zero: by itself it is nothing. Add the heaven, and it is much. Indifference to the worlds variety is prudence: the wise care little for novelty. Our lives fold and unfold like theater, so be careful to end well. FORGIVE AND FORGET Know how to forget. It takes more luck than skill. The things that should most be forgotten are the ones most easily remembered. Not only does memory behave basely, not coming forward when it is needed, it is also foolish, for it comes to us when it shouldnt. it is prolix when it can give us pain, and careless when remedy. Let us train memory and teach it better manners, for it can give us heaven and hell. Selfsatisfied people never care about this in their silly innocence they are always happy. FORTUNE HUNTER Plan for bad fortune while your fortune is good. In the summer it is wise to provide for winter, and it is easier to do so. Favors are less expensive and friendships abound. It is good to save up for a rainy day, adversity is expensive and all is lacking. Keep a following of friends and grateful people; someday you recognize them. In adversity it is the other way around.
