Purana is a broad genre of Indian literature that covers a wide range of topics, most notably legends
and other traditional lore. The Puranas are famous for the elaborate layers of symbolism depicted in
their stories. Several of these texts, which were originally written in Sanskrit and other Indian
languages, are named after major Hindu gods such as Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, and Adi Shakti. Puranic
literature can be found in both Hinduism and Jainism.
The Puranic literature is encyclopedic, with topics ranging from cosmology to genealogies of gods,
goddesses, kings, heroes, sages, and demigods, folk tales, pilgrimages, temples, medicine,
astronomy, grammar, mineralogy, humor, love stories,theology and philosophy. Of the many texts
designated 'Puranas' the most important are the Mahāpurāṇas or the major Puranas.They are as
