DIET FOR PATIENT WITH
CHRONIC KIDNEY FAILURE (CKD)

Before fully entering into the diet, it is important to clarify some things that are essential in

patients with CKD.

The kidney is the blood filter par excellence, all of it passes through there. You only find out

about CKD when 75% of this organ is already failing. The functional unit is the nephron.

In these types of patients, nutrition is essential. You have always been told about giving diets low

in protein, but more important than that is its quality, to maintain the function and integrity of the

body's filter.

I will send you diets with quality protein so that you can use it regularly. I highly recommend that

you use specific foods as COMPLEMENTS and as “treats” the foods. ments allowed.

Its nutritional treatment is essential because kidney damage is irreversible and progressive,

therefore if adequate nutrition is not given, more nephrons will be lost every day until vol be

incompatible with life.

Proteins

As I told you, more than the quantity, the most important thing is the quality of the protein. The

pro Theines of animal origin (beef, fish, egg, chicken...) are the highest quality due to their high

biological value. That is, its ability to create tissues, such as muscle and organs. The egg is

considered the protein with the highest biological value, 100. Milk, 92; chicken and beef, 72; etc.

The kidney patient loses a lot of muscle mass, loses weight, therefore we must offer him this

type of protein, which does not cause much work for the kidney and is easily converted.

Proteins of animal origin are the best for patients with kidney failure, because they are easy to

digest. version towards tissue and not to force the kidney.

Feeding low-quality protein requires more effort on the part of the kidney. See how quality is

more important than quantity?

If you want to know more about protein and the kidney, I recommend these short articles:

CARBOHYDRATES (PASTA, CEREALS, GRASS...)

In CKD patients, it is important to cover their energy demand and it is best to avoid high-quality

proteins being used for this purpose, as they are already “very busy” trying to generate and

maintain the lost tissue.

Therefore, the best way to help meet the energy requirements of the CKD patient is with

carbohydrates.

We will incorporate some carbohydrates into our diets through potatoes or rice.

FATS

Although dogs and cats, as good carnivores, have a great capacity for the synthesis of animal

fats, they must be avoided in excess due to oxidative processes. The best results two have been

seen from the combination of omega 3 fats and animal fat. Avoid vegetables in general.

dognutritionist.com
HYPERTENSION

Hypertension is rare in dogs and cats, however CKD is the most common cause of elevated tion

of pressure in this type of pets.

Think that the kidney is like a hose that has water passage and cut-off systems at the entrance

and exit (made of plastic or rubber). If you close them but the water tap is open, you may see

Carlos Gutierrez Veterinarian Av, San Diego 25 3°B 28018, Madrid. Spain,
Personalized nutrition for your pet email: help@nutricionistadeperros.com
www.dognutritionist.com Tel.: 00(34) 637982644
some small leaks (due to the pressure exerted by the open tap), and if not over time, the pressure

will play its role. Well, something like this happens with blood pressure on the kidneys. It must be

reduced.

SALT

Carnivores do not need salt, their natural diet (prey) provides the sodium (salt) necessary to meet

their requirements. As we well know, salt increases tension, so if salt is released be used in

moderation and try to avoid it in healthy dogs, in patients with CKD it should be avoided. destroy it

at all costs. If your dog likes it spicy, you can use garlic or a little butter. keel or fat.

Commercial diets, the vast majority, are high in salt, which is why they should be avoided and the

only ones allowed are prescription ones.

-------------------------------------------- dognutritionist.com----------------------------------------------------------

Overweight? If we have a patient with CKD and who is overweight, he will benefit doubly if he

loses weight because in addition to the obvious benefits of weight reduction in obese dogs,

hypertension is reduced. There are specific medications, in addition to nutrition, that help reduce

hypertension, consult your veterinarian.

Omega 3 and Arginine have shown a reduction in blood hypertension with bean consequential

benefits.

COMMERCIAL FOOD

They are high in phosphorus and the protein is of medium to low quality (not all). I remind you that

in patients with CKD it is important to keep phosphorus levels low.

Carlos Gutierrez Veterinarian Av, San Diego 25 3°B 28018, Madrid. Spain,
Personalized nutrition for your pet email: help@nutricionistadeperros.com
www.dognutritionist.com Tel.: 00(34) 637982644
Furthermore, since many nutrients are lost in the manufacturing process of the “balls”, they are

“bathed” in the final part with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Result? Excess vitamins, and

D is nephrotoxic (Toxic to the kidney). The prescription ones take more care of this aspect.

It is very important that you give prescription diets as a complement

Because? No diet is perfect, that doesn't exist. The diets I give you are very good for your problem

but they are not perfect, the best thing in nutrition is variety. If you give a prescription food you will

also be offering other nutrients and without the risk of giving a co-diet. commercial for healthy

dogs, which can provide nutrients not appropriate for their condition.

If for some reason you have to give it more days, no problem. But try to be consistent with

homemade diets, especially due to the quality of their ingredients and the water content present in

them.

------ dognutritionist.com-------------------------
KIDNEY PRESCRIPTION FOODS

There are specific commercial brands for IRC, (Royal canin, Hills), I recommend them only with

mo complement in low quantity. Use them.

MATCH

Phosphorus is harmful to the kidney if it is in excess (hyperphosphatemia). Patients with CKD

should be controlled with foods low in phosphorus and with “phosphorus sequestrants” such as

calcium carbonate (eggshell), which is why it is important to provide it in the diet.

Calcium and phosphorus are essential in the body and are interrelated, the level of phosphorus

forum too high in the blood can cause:

• Low calcium (this causes the body to pull calcium from the bones, which can make them

not have much room for action, that is, you cannot give a wide variety of foods, so I give you

some diets and some extra foods. As a complement you can use veterinary prescription diets

18 ORTHOMOLECULAR NUTRITION IN THE PATIENT WITH
CHRONIC KIDNEY FAILURE (CKD)

Before getting into the subject, let me briefly explain what orthomolecular nutrition is.

Orthomolecular nutrition is the science of providing specific nutrients (not drugs) for specific

conditions. With these examples it will be clearer to you.

Patients with heart problems benefit if they ingest carnitine, an amino acid that helps

incorporate fat (energy) into heart cells (cardiocytes), improving remarkably do its function.

Another example?

In patients with skin problems, a beneficial effect has been seen when using omega 3 fatty acids

(present in fish oil). Allergies and itching decrease.

One more to make it clear.

In patients with osteoarthritis problems, the use of glycosaminoglycans (present in cartilage and

other foods) helps regenerate joint cartilage.

Well, I think it's clear.

-------------------------------------------- dognutritionist.com----------------------------------------------------------
In patients with kidney problems or chronic kidney failure (CKD), it is essential to

use of certain nutrients (foods) that will undoubtedly protect you and help you better re its

operation.

You can get most of these in pharmacies and/or herbal stores.

Carlos Gutierrez Veterinarian Av, San Diego 25 3°B 28018, Madrid. Spain,
Personalized nutrition for your pet email: help@nutricionistadeperros.com
www.dognutritionist.com Tel.: 00(34) 637982644
DOSE

Pay attention to this. I try to give you doses and not “pills.” What do I mean by this? Very rarely am

I going to tell you “Give it half a pill” except for international products that are easy to find in any

country. How am I going to tell you? For example, I will tell you “10 mg per kilo of weight.” Then

you do the conversion. Because? Because each laboratory varies its pre sensations, and while

some have a pill with 20 mg, the others have the same pill with 40 mg.

-------------------------------------------- dognutritionist.com----------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT:

“Arm the intestine”

Let me explain something very important to you. As it is very likely that you have had a dog fed based on
those dry, highly industrialized balls that do not spoil, that is, feed, kibble, concentrate... whatever you want
to call them, without a doubt your dog has a very weak intestine; It is important to strengthen or “arm” it so
that it absorbs nutrients as best as possible.

We are going to use the following nutrients that you can easily find in any grocery store. nutritional
supplements, herbalists, herbalists..., start as soon as possible, even before the diet. I highly recommend
that you give these nutrients at least five to seven days before starting the diet, which is why I already
explained the lines above.

The nutrients to build the intestine are the following:

Probiotics

Glutamine

Probiotics are very easy to get, really. If you can't get glutamine, which is also relatively easy to get, don't
worry, start with probiotics, it will be the best for your dog's intestine.

Probiotics . I want you to buy any that are rich in acidophilus , it may have other probiotics plus the
brand you buy (almost certainly), don't worry, they won't hurt you, on the contrary, but it is important that it
has acidophilus , because it is one of the main probiotics in the flora of dogs sa us. No matter the brand.

Offers one capsule for large dogs and 1/2 for small ones and a half us, fasting as far away from the first
meal as possible. If you couldn't fast, it doesn't matter, what matters It is important that you consume them
for at least a month. I recommend repeating this treatment 3-4 times a year for 1-2 months and rest for the
same amount.

Glutamine. This is the key amino acid for the specific nutrition of intestinal cells. Admi nistra 500mg per
day, in the case of large dogs and 250mg for small and medium-sized dogs. With guidelines similar to
those of probiotics, you give 1-2 months and rest the same... and so on.

19 OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS FROM FISH OIL

First rule. Never buy VEGETABLE ORIGIN , those are good for us but not for your dog,

remember, he is a carnivore, he transforms fats and proteins of animal origin better. So, let them

be FISH.

How do they work in patients with nephropathy (kidney disease)?

Antioxidant

Among other benefits is the antioxidant effect. The patient with kidney problems has many There

are several oxidation reactions that damage this vital organ, the more we protect it with

antioxidants, the better.

Hypertension

Among other beneficial effects, its anti-inflammatory effect is scientifically proven. But for the

kidney patient, a very important one is the reduction of blood pressure, so important so much in

these cases.

They also influence (omega 3) positively on renal

hemodynamics and limit intrarenal classification.

of omega 3 in this type of patient can be found. see here (in

I recommend Becozyme from Bayer, you can find it at any pharmacy.

Vitamin B complexes are usually not toxic because they are water-soluble, that is, soluble in water.

This is not the case with fat-soluble (oil-soluble) vitamins, which tend to store found in the body,

these are: Vitamin A, D, E and K.

The main characteristics of group B vitamins are:

Make better use of energy through food

Maintains the stability of the nervous system

Strengthens the nervous system

Dose:

As I said, it is very safe. Since they are very hard pills, you won't do it exactly when you split them,

but don't worry, I've already told you that they are very safe. So give a piece approx. mado.

♦ Dogsguys: 1/8 pill

♦ Dogsmedium ¼ pill
