HISTORY OF BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL
Football has been around for a long time. It was initially invented in England, but ended up
becoming popular all over the world. In Brazil, anyway, soccer is much more than just any
sport. It's practically a religion. But how did it get to Brazil? How did it become so popular?
And who are the best Brazilian players in history? We are going to immerse ourselves in the
history of football in Brazil, and remember Brazil's titles in the World Cup, the history of the
Maracanazo of 1950, the 7-1 and much more.
The Origin of Brazilian Soccer
Believe it or not, the history of football in Brazil is not simple. In fact, it is as simple as you
could imagine it would be to learn Portuguese without help, very complicated. So we will
start with an already complicated topic: who brought football to Brazil. And we have two
versions competing to go down in history.
The History of Brazilian Football in the hands of Thomas Donohoe
Some people believe that it was Scotsman Thomas Donohoe, who brought the first soccer
balls to Brazil in the early 1890s. Donohoe and other British workers at the Bangú factory in
Rio de Janeiro are said to have introduced the sport to the locals. Thus the first soccer match
in Brazil took place in 1894 in the West Zone of Rio.
How is this answered? Well, some discredit Donohoe and the games played in Rio due to the
fact that they did not follow the rules. The fields used to play did not have official
measurements. The teams were not uniformed. And there was no planning or organization
while they played.
Charles Miller as the one who brought Soccer to Brazil Officially
The second version of the origin of soccer in Brazil takes us to the year 1898 when the first
soccer team in Brazil was formed at the Mackenzie School in São Paulo. Thanks to the
encouragement of Charles Miller, many other soccer teams were formed and, in a short time,
there were already several teams in the cities of the country.
According to this version, Charles Miller was responsible for bringing football to Brazil. To be
clearer, in 1894, Charles brought two balls and some books explaining the rules of the game
after having had his own experience as a player for an English club. His first soccer game in
Brazil happened just a few months after Donohoe's.
Brazil Grows with Desire for More Football
The first matches between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo were in 1901. In 1902, there was
the first São Paulo championship, but it was in 1906 that Brazilian football was shown to the
world: the São Paulo team played its first official international match. The match was at home,
in São Paulo itself, and the São Paulo team lost with a score of 6 to 0 against the South
African team. In 1925, Brazilian football gained space in Europe, playing 10 games and
winning 9.
After Brazil's victories abroad, the CBD (Confederação Brasileira de Desportos: Brazilian
Sports Confederation) was created. Meanwhile, FIFA (International Association of Football
Federation) recognized CBD only nine years later.
Soccer became the most popular sport in Brazil, a national passion and Pelé , the king of
soccer, is considered a national hero. Besides him, Brazil also produced the best players ,
famous all over the world, names
such as: Romário , Zico , Ronaldo and many others who helped win important titles such as
our five World Cups and built our great football reputation. They also created the image of
Brazil as the land of Futebol Arte (Art Football). A different style and technique where players
present different dribbles and unique skills characteristic of the country.
Now, we understand why Brazil is the country of soccer.
