"The Corporation" is not just a documentary; it's a wake-up call, a rallying cry for a
generation grappling with the consequences of unchecked corporate power. It provides the
tools to question, to analyse, and ultimately, to demand change. In its unflinching
examination of the corporation, the film sheds light on the mechanisms behind our current
state of affairs, empowering us to reclaim our rights and build a future where humans, not
corporations, stand at the helm.
What is a corporation ?
As rightly presented in the video, “the corporation is a paradox, an institution that creates
great wealth, but causes enormous, and often hidden harms.”
Evolution of the corporation
The film starts by tracing the evolution of corporations from initial public interest entities
to powerful entities with legal rights similar to individuals. Couple centuries ago
the business corporation was a small insignificant institution, but today it has become a
pseudo-GOD like entity that sees all, feeds us all and whose decisions drastically impact lives
of billions around the globe and the trajectory of human evolution.
It introduces the central theme, presenting arguments for and against corporations. It
touches on the historical evolution of corporations, their legal empowerment, and the
potential dual nature of corporations as both a force for good and a threat due to profit-
driven motives. The discussion covers the misuse of 14th amendment's .
The Human and Environmental Cost of Greed
The focus shifts to the exploitation of workers in countries like Bangladesh, China, and the
Dominican Republic, specifically citing Nike's practices. Moreover Specific cases, like
Monsanto's impact on the environment and public health, are examined in this video. It
suggests that corporations, driven by profit motives, engaged in practices that had negative
consequences for both the environment and the working class and implies that decisions
made by the rich are disconnected from the reality experienced by the majority of people
on the planet.
Further the documentary explores the petrochemical era, highlighting how the
development of synthetic chemicals led to hazardous side effects. It suggests that the
industry, aware of the risks, attempted to trivialize them.
The corporate Psychopathy
The documentary suggests that corporations, as a whole, can show traits similar to
psychopathy. This doesn't mean individual people in corporations are psychopathic, but
rather that the overall behaviour of corporations, driven by a strong desire for profit, can
resemble psychopathic traits. This includes a lack of empathy, disregard for social and
environmental impacts, and a focus mainly on self-interest. . It also briefly mention fascism
in relation to corporations too.
Instances of corporate distrust
the documentary sheds light on corporate strategies aimed at influencing public
perception through advertising, especially among children and teens. It examines Pfizer's
community engagement initiatives, providing insights into their efforts to improve the
community while raising questions about the sincerity of such endeavours and calling it a
façade. he film also explores a patent dispute involving General Electric, revealing how
corporations navigate legal battles to assert ownership and control over innovations.
Additionally, it unveils instances of media distortion at Fox News, exposing how corporate
pressures can shape news narratives and compromise journalism integrity.
Final Message
In the final segment, the documentary urges a revaluation of the current corporate
structure, it critiques corporate social responsibility, advocates for accountability, and
encourages individual and collective activism to bring about positive change and reshape
the relationship between corporations and society.
