Composition : Semester 2 : How to write an

essay.
Features of an essay :
- An essay is longer and tells more information than a paragraph

- It has an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion, each paragraph


is indented.

- It it usually four paragraphs or more

Introduction :
- The introduction has the introductory sentence and the thesis.

- The introductory sentence can :

• *Give a fact , information or simply a definition.

• *Give a general statement as to what some people think or feel


about something.

- The thesis can :

• *Say what you think or feel

• *Give a fact or information

• *Introduce what the body paragraphs will talk about

Body paragraphs :
• *Body paragraphs talk more about the thesis.

• *Body paragraphs can explain , describe , give reasons , or give


examples for the thesis.
• *The first sentence is the main point and the following sentences
are supporting details.

Example :

Main point : if students wear uniforms , parents can save money.

Supporting detail : They will not need to buy many different clothes for
their kids.

Transitions :
• Going from a point to another point : first , second , third , first of all ,
in addition to that , lastly , finally

• Time order : Then , next , later , last week , on sunday

• Examples : For example , for instance , as an example.

• Reasons : Because of , because , since , due to

• Differences : But , yet , however , in contrast , on the contrary.

• Similarities : Similarly , likewise

• Effects : Thus , therefore , so , consequently , as a result

Conclusion :
- The conclusion ends the essay. Concluding sentences can :

• Restate the thesis

• Give a final thoughts or feeling ( but no a new idea )

• Suggest something

• Summarize the main points

• Share a hope ( i hope this problems will come to an end one day )
• Predict something ( with this increase of pollution earth is going to
suffer more tomorrow )

Transitions to close the essay :


In conclusion , in short , in brief , to conclude
