INSTALLATION
Ref: Section 3
• Machine location.
• The compressor requires only
the following services and
environment.
Location
• A relatively clean, debris free, dry
shelter.
• Sufficient ambient air for cooling.
• A sufficient source of clean compressor
intake air.
• Appropriate power supply.
• An appropriate means to handle the
water/oil mixture discharged from the
automatic condensate drain.
Power Supply (electric)
• The compressor is completely
wired, however it is necessary to
have a qualified electrician install
the appropriate power supply in
accordance with appropriate
codes.
Note:
• It is very important that on three
phase machines to wire the motor
starter for the proper rotation.
• An arrow pointing in the correct
direction of rotation is affixed to
the top of the fan shroud. (some
models on the back of the
compressor block).
Remote Air Intake
• Determine the best location for the air
intake.
• Plan the pipe routing.
• Select the appropriate pipe size to
minimize air flow loss.
• For runs longer than 10 ft. use 1”-2”
nominal size PVC pipe.
• For over 10 ft. - calculate pipe size by
adding 1/4” diameter for each
additional 10’.
• Note: It is important that
measures be taken to insure
that no water be ingested into
the intake of the compressor!
Initial Start-up
Procedure
• Note: Although compressor parameters are
pre-set in the factory. It is possible for some
adjustments to change as a result of shipping
and handling.
• Check your complete installation, all piping,
fittings, etc.
• Check compressor intake air is clear and
fresh.
• Check oil levels. (DO NOT OVERFILL!!!)
• Install purification cartridges.
• Install litmus paper and CO button in the visual indicator.
• Rotate the compressor 1-2x by hand to check for
movement.
• Operate the starter and check for correct rotation.
• Start unit and check gauges for air flow.
• Insure that the Auto-Condensate drain is closed while
running. (6-7 seconds).
• Check oil pressure.
• (low pressure lubrication on newer 5407-5409)
• Check and adjust air pressure switch setting if
necessary. (section 8)
• After 30 min. of operation, check valve heads.
Intake (warm) exhaust (hot).
• Let’s go to TESTING
and start up a new
Mako Compressor!
Short/Long Term
Inhibition
• Up to 6 months…
• Start the compressor with condensate drains open
and run for 5 minutes to expel all condensate…
• Stop the compressor, isolate from power supply,
drain oil sump…
• Remove all valve assy, from cylinders, clean and
spray with appropriate heavy duty preservative…
• Spray bores with preservative, turning the
compressor by hand to distribute fluid to all
surfaces.
Continued…
• Replace valves, close all openings with plastic
plugs or masking tape.
• Attach label with date of inhibition and
warning… DO NOT ROTATE!
Long Term
(up to 2 years)
• Start compressor with auto condensate drains open
and run for 5 minutes to expel all condensate from
cylinders and coolers…
• Stop and isolate compressor, drain oil sump while
warm and re-fill sump with approved heavy duty
preservative…
• Re-start compressor and runs with drains open for 5
minutes to distribute fluid over all internal
surfaces…
• Stop and isolate compressor, drain approved heavy
duty preservative from sump…
• Remove all valve assemblies from cylinders and
spray valves with approved heavy duty
preservative…
• With valve assemblies still removed, sptay bores
with preservative, rotating the compressor slowly by
hand to distribute fluid over cylinders…
• Replace valve assemblies, seal all openings with
plastic plugs or masking tape…
• Attach labels with date of inhibition and warning
“DO NOT ROTATE”.
START-UP
AFTER INHIBITION
• If the compressor has been idle for 6 months or
more, remove oil pump bearing cover and lubricate
the bearing before starting up…
• Insure the final stage piston is well lubricated with
recommended oil.
Before Starting
• Ensure that all plastic plugs and masking tape
covering ports are removed…

• Ensure that crank-case is filled to the proper level
with recommended oil…
• Remove valve heads and examine the cylinders.
Add a small qty. of oil to the upper cylinder and
rotate the compressor by hand to spread the oil
over the cylinder walls…
• Prior to start-up, rotate the compressor by hand to
ensure good movement.

• 4500 & 6000 psi available • ASME cylinders are dual stamped
for 5250 & 7000 psi
• 4500 psi DOT’s hold 444 cf @ 4500
psi • ASME cylinders will hold 424 cf
@ 5000 psi & 481 cf @ 6000 psi.
• 6000 psi DOT’s hold 509 cf @ 6000
psi • Designed with a 4 to 1 or 3 to 1
safety factor.
