Discussion Questions
• What do you like to do when you are by yourself?
• What do you like to do with an adult? With your friends?
• Look at the picture on page 14. How do you think San feels
about Dad’s nap?
Exploring the Story
• Choose one of the following short a words: bat, can, cap,
cat, Dad, ham, mat, pan, rap, sax, tag.
Give clues to the word, such as “I’m thinking of a word. It
is a thing. This thing is made of wood or aluminum. It is
used during a game. It hits a ball.” Remember that the
answer will always have the short a sound.
• Patapan is a word that stands for the sound of a drum in a
French song. Say the word three times in a row and then
pause: patapan, patapan, patapan (pause).
Create variations by substituting other letters to make
new nonsense words: batapan, batapan, batapan (pause).
Each time you add a new word, start from the beginning
with patapan and chant each line cumulatively. Suggested
variations include: catapan, datapan, fatapan, hatapan,
matapan, ratapan, satapan.
