Answer the following questions.
1. How are ‘high adventure and bright dream’ related to maps?
Ans: Maps help us to dream happily of unknown places and unseen things. They help us plan and
go on exciting adventures. They make us feel fascinated about every place we can travel to and
discover. That is how they are related to high adventure and bright dreams.
2. Maps are really / Magic wands / For home-staying / Vagabonds!
a. Why have maps been called magic wands?
Ans: Maps have been called magic wands because they seem to have a magical power similar
to magic wands. Magic wands can easily transport us elsewhere or change one thing into
another. Maps can help us imagine different places so well that it feels as if we are there, and
they can make ordinary things like ice and markets feel wonderful and exciting because they
are far away and unknown.
b. How can someone be home-staying and a vagabond at the same time?
Ans: A person who stays at home can be a vagabond—he or she can travel to different
places—by reading about and imagining different places. In one’s imagination, one can move
from markets to ice floes, ships to airplanes in a matter of seconds, all the while sitting at
home. And maps can help one do that.
3. Think of another thing that looks simple and humble on the surface, but which can be powerful
and exciting. What is it? Write a short paragraph about how it helps to fuel your imagination.
Ans: A book or a painting may look simple and humble on the surface, but it can fire our
imagination by talking about or showing us strange, wonderful or even imaginary places, people
and things.
4. How does the poet glorify a map in the poem?
Ans: The poet brings out the importance of a map, which no one realizes is inevitable for our day
to day movements. One usually considers a map an insignificant piece of paper but the poet says
it is much mightier than what it projects itself to be. It is most powerful as it is required to
navigate the ship, direct the trains and move on the roads. Maps are like magic wands to people
who travel a lot and explore new places in the world. This way, the poet feels maps help in
fulfilling adventurous dreams and exciting travels.
5. Why does the poet compare maps to magic wands?
Ans: A person looking at maps at home can be transported in their imagination to distant lands,
as if by magic.
6. How are maps mightier than they appear to be?
Ans: Maps are not only diagrams on paper describing the physical features of countries. They are
also a means of exciting us to seek adventure through travel or at least dream of visiting exotic
places even if we are unable to visit them.
