Ethics and Qualities of an Officiating Official

1. Emotional- An officiating official should possess confidence. It is believing in oneself.

immersion and observations of game officiating activities can help improve it.
2. Mental- It can be achieved by having a thorough knowledge on the rules of the game,
alertness, vigilance which result to timely, decisive, honest, and impartial judgement.
Decisiveness results to integrity of the result of the game leading to satisfying result and
acceptance of success and failure for both competing teams and players.
3. Physical- These qualities refer to the physical attributes of an officiating official. Since
officiating needs to catch up with every detail of the athletes or player on court, he needs to
have a high level of fitness to be able to perform his job.
4. Social- It refers to the ability to deal with others at any given situation. Complaints are
inevitable in game. It is the ability of an officiating official to settle disputes without
sacrificing the integrity of a game and the officiating team.

Referee’s Hand Signal

This part of the CLAS consists of referee’s hand signals. It requires you to do warm-up
exercises before executing each movement. Remember that a referee must manifest alertness,
decisiveness, and firmness in calling sports violations. You must also place the right angle on the
player in order to see the play and make a good decision.
Here’s How You Do It!
1. Study and practice to execute the referee’s hand signal of volleyball, and basketball
games.
2. Ask assistance from one family member who will read the terminologies and check
your execution whether correct or not.
3. Execute each terminology mentioned by your activity partner.
4. Master the referee’s hand signals, and then proceed to the next activity.

Let’s Sum It Up
This activity will enhance your hand’s signaling in sports officiating. Remember, constant
practice will improve your confidence, decision making, and physical fitness level which is
a quality of a good referee. You will be graded base on the rubric provided. Follow the
procedure correctly to get highest rating.
Procedures:
1. Wear dress with collar, black pants and shoes.
2. Do warm-up exercise from head to toe.
3. Take a quick three steps and pause, and blow your whistle shortly.
4. After blowing the whistle, execute referee’s hand signals by following
what is in the picture.
5. Execute each referee’s hand signal 5 times.
6. Rate yourself according to your performance using the rubric.
7. Total your score and divided by 15 to get your average score.
