Janet Airlines – passenger planes that “don’t exist”
Quick summary:
An unofficial name to a fleet of passenger aircraft which is operated by the United States
Department of the Air Force.
The aircraft are believed to be employee shuttles to transport military and contactor personal in and
out of northern restricted airspace of Las Vegas. Most notably the same airspace as groom
lake/Homey Airport (AKA. Area 51) and the Tonopah Test range.
The name “Janet” is said to stand for “Just Another Non-Existent Terminal” or “Joint Air Network for
Employee Transportation”.
The main story:
Each morning Mon-Fri the fleet of aircraft will take off from Las Vegas international airport and fly
due north into the restricted airspace. Some planes can be seen travelling to The Tonopah Test
range and turn their transponders off once they are about to land, however other planes who are
not going there, turn their transponders off as they enter restricted airspace and then only reappear
later that evening leaving that airspace.
The left-hand picture shows
2 parked Boeing 737-600s
at Area 51, the same
aircraft as seen at Las Vegas
International airport on the
right-hand side.
On the left is one of the Boeing
737-600s of the Janet fleet. There
are 6 Boeing 737-600s in the fleet.
The distinct red stripe along the
side of the aircraft makes it unique
and easy to recognise.
Running the tail number IDs
through the FAA (Federal Aviation
Administration) shows that these
aircraft are owned by the United
States Airforce.
Here are several pictures before the flights have left the airport and after.
On the left it can be seen that the full fleet is visible and an almost empty car-park. While on the
right the car park is full and the airport is empty. The hanger is located right next to the Las Vegas
Runway and is owned by a company called AECOM.
Hanger in respect to Las Vegas Airport. Picture is oriented up is north.
Finally, here are some images I captured January 6th 2022, at 1-2AM UTC (5-6PM Pacific Standard
Time, West coast United states.)
Janet68 coming out of
nowhere, as they have
just turned on their
transponder after
departing the Tonopah
Testing Range.
The aircraft then headed
to Las Vegas Airport and
eventually touched down
at 17:48 where it then
taxied and parked.
More interestingly at 01:35 UTC (17:35 PST)
JANET26 appeared out of no where from a
different flight path than JANET68 most likely
meaning this aircraft was coming from Area-51.
The picture of JANET26’s flight path is on the right
hand side and notice it coming out of no where
meaning they have just turned on their
transponder after leaving restricted airspace. Most
likely meaning they had taken off from Area-51 a
few more KM North of that flight path.
As JANET airlines is military, not much is known about the true purpose, just speculation. The most
likey reson for this airline is for Military personal to be transported to and from military installations
north of Las Vegas.
