COMP1638: Database Management and Administration

Lab 2
Working with Enterprise Manager

In the laboratory projects of this course, you assume the role of a database administrator (DBA). The
operating system (OS) accounts on your computer are:

 username = Administrator
 password = !1oracle

The system administrator has set up the OS so that the Oracle Database software is installed and the database
is created.

The aim of this lab is to investigate the structure of the database, the instance and the environment.

Lab 2.1: Investigating your database


1) Open Enterprise Manager Database Express window:
a) On the Desktop double click on the icon EM.

b) You might get a message that the site uses a plugin…. Click on Activate Adobe Flash:

In the next pop-up window choose Allow and Remember:


c) You should get a login screen.

d) Login as an database administrator:


Username= sys
Password= oracle
Connect As =sysdba Make sure you click on the checkbox as sysdba

e) You should get a home page for your Enterprise Manager Database Express 12c:
Investigate the information on the Home page and write down the name of your database, the name
of the instance and the name of the host machine.

f) Navigate to Configuration tab-> Memory

In the Memory Management page investigate memory Allocation Breakdown in the left bottom
corner and answer the following question
Question 1: What is your understanding of the SGA? What is the size of the SGA in the instance of
your server?

2) Now you need to investigate your database storage structures.


a) Navigate to the Storage tab->Control Files.

b) Find information about the control file(s) and answer the following question

Question 2: What is your understanding of the control file? How many control files have been
created in your database and where? Find your control files in the Windows Explorer and provide a
screen-shot of their location.

3) Navigate to Storage-> Redo Log Groups.


a) Find information about the control file(s) and answer the following question:
Question 3: What is a redo log? How many redo log groups have been created? Find the location of
the online redo log files in the Windows Explorer? Explain and provide a screen-shot.

4) Investigate the logical storages and physical storages of your database:


a) Navigate Storage->Tablespaces:

b) On the Tablespaces page investigate information about the tablespaces and corresponding data files
by expanding everything. Answer the following question.

Question 4: What is the tablespace? How many tablespaces have been created in your database?

Question 5: What is data file? How many data files have been created in your database and where?
Find the location of the data files in the Window Explorer, provide a screen-shot.

Deliverables:
For formative assessment, please answer the following questions:

Question 1: What is your understanding of the SGA? What is the size of the SGA? How much
memory was allocated to Buffer Cache, Shared Pool, and Large Pool?

Question 2: What is your understanding of the control file? How many control files have been
created in your database and where? Find your control files in the Windows Explorer, provide a
screen-shot of the location and explain.

Question 3: What is a redo log? How many redo log groups have been created? Find the location of
the online redo log files in the Windows Explorer? Explain and provide a screen-shot.
Question 4: What is the tablespace? How many tablespaces have been created in your database?

Question 5: What is data file? How many data files have been created in your database and where?
Find the location of the data files in the Window Explorer, provide a screen-shot..
