THE STORY OF MAPEI
With strength and passion,
since 1937.
Ours is a great Italian story which begins on the outskirts of Milan with Rodolfo Squinzi, the company’s founder, who began
producing Auxiliary Materials for the Building Industry (MAPEI in Italian stands for “Materiali Ausiliari Per l’Edilizia e l’Industria”).
It was his idea to focus on a niche market of the sector, adhesives for floor and wall coverings, and was the first step on the
road to success. In the 60’s, as the Italian ceramics market exploded, Mapei was ready to seize the opportunity by offering a
range of products that made the laying of ceramic tiles easier and safer by replacing traditional cementitious mortar.
Those years were crucial for Mapei to understand the value of Research, which quickly became one of the main drivers
behind the company’s development. Mapei started producing new types of adhesives, but also sealants, special mortars,
waterproofing products and admixtures for concrete.
Towards the end of the 70’s, Mapei started looking towards International markets and opened its very first facility outside the
home country, in Canada. This was how the company’s expansion across all the continents began, turning Mapei into a solid
reality during the 80’s through the opening of further production facilities in the most strategic areas for the global building
market.
“The capacity to interpret the trends of the sector of adhesives and chemical products for the building industry and the ability to
constantly remain one step ahead in order to bring innovative products to the market to meet its emerging needs.”
This was what Rodolfo Squinzi saw as Mapei’s mission, a mission which was accomplished and then further developed in an
extraordinary way by his son Giorgio, who succeeded him. Giorgio ran Mapei for 35 years – up to the 2nd October 2019, when
he passed away – with solid ethics and a special interest in people that made him well-known among his employees and co-
workers. From his father, Giorgio Squinzi inherited not only his passion for work, chemistry and business, but also for cycling.
And it was this latter passion that gave rise to his most famous quote, one which has been a guide and inspiration for all those
who have collaborated with Mapei ever since: “Never stop pedaling”.

OVER 85 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

Day in day out, construction sites all
around the world can count on Mapei.
For over 85 years, the Mapei team has been providing solutions of excellence for the building market. All around the world,
we take part in both the construction and the restoration and preservation of buildings of historical and artistical value.
To us, quality in construction really makes the difference and this is what made us global leaders in the production of
adhesives, sealants and chemical products for the building industry.
Wherever we go, our corporate philosophy accompanies us: first-class specialisation, unrivalled know-how,
internationalisation, research and development to create increasingly advanced products, customised service for our
clients, undivided attention to the economic, social and productive sustainability of our company, as well as care for
the health of installers and end users of our products, while always acknowledging the value of every single member
of the world of Mapei.

4
THE FUTURE OF MAPEI
The challenges thrown down
by the market require an
increasingly wider vision, as well
as more innovation and a focus on
sustainability.
We are the third generation of a family of entrepreneurs. And just like our grandfather, Rodolfo, and our father, Giorgio,
we have the same irrepressible enthusiasm in our DNA, the desire to find new solutions and the capacity to reach
ambitious goals.
We run what has become a leading company in its sector, thanks not only to the quality of our products, but also
a winning mindset and a great and close-knit team that manages the business according to interdependent social,
environmental and economic values.
An increasingly complex future awaits us in an increasingly globalised world where everything moves and will continue
to move faster and faster. And where the sustainability of our choices towards the environment and society in general
will be an increasingly essential requirement to guarantee a better world for the generations to come. Nonetheless, we
know that the great technical, human and ethical heritage that made Mapei great in all these years allows us to look to
tomorrow without fear and with the same level of trust, to be, as always, the architects of our future.

KERABOND T
Cementitious adhesive with no vertical slip for
ceramic tiles.

CLASSIFICATION IN COMPLIANCE WITH ISO 13007

Kerabond T is a normal (1) slip-resistant (T) cementitious (C) adhesive of class C1T.

WHERE TO USE
· Indoor and outdoor fixing of ceramic tiles and mosaics of all types on floors, walls and ceilings.
· For fixing porcelain tiles (for large format tiles, e.g. more than 600x300 mm on wall, consult your local MAPEI technical
advisor).
· Spot bonding of insulating materials such as expanded polystyrene, expanded polyurethane, rock and glass wool, wood-
cement boards and sound-deadening panels etc.

Some application examples

Paper-faced or mesh-backed mosaics and all types of ceramic tiles (quarry tiles, single-fired and clinker tiles, etc.), on:
· conventional renders or cement mortar walls;
· ordinary concrete slabs or reinforced floating slabs, provided they are sufficiently well aged and cured;
· gypsum boards and anhydrite screeds as long as they are first treated with an appropriate primer.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Kerabond T is a grey or white powder composed of cement, fine-grade, synthetic resins and special additives formulated
in the MAPEI Research and Development Laboratories.
Mixed with water, Kerabond T becomes an easily trowellable mortar with good bonding strength, low slump and high
grab so that it can be applied vertically without sagging, even holding heavy tiles. Tiles can be installed from the top
towards the bottom without using spacer pegs.
Kerabond T hardens without noticeable shrinkage to become extremely resistant, adhering perfectly to all the
conventional materials used in construction.
N.B.: Mixing Kerabond T with Isolastic in place of water improves the characteristics to meet the requirements of class
C2ES2 (highly deformable improved cementitious adhesive) according to ISO 13007 and EN 12004.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Use Kerabond T mixed with Isolastic in the following cases:
· on foamed concrete walls and light weight blockwork;
· over underfloor heating or cooling installations;
· with large-size tiles;
· for the installation of glass mosaics;
· for the installation of stone materials as long as they are classified as stable and moisture-proof
Do not use Kerabond T in the following cases:
· on wooden substrates;
· on gypsum board walls unless pre-treated with an appropriate primer and properly fixed to obtain a suitable bearing;
· on metal, rubber, PVC and linoleum surfaces;
· for laying tiles which require a nominal layer of adhesive more than 10 mm thick;
· where the surface must be set to light foot traffic rapidly;
· for the installation of non-absorbent tiles (quarry tiles, single-fired tiles, clinker tiles, etc.) on other non-absorbent wall
and floor substrates.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Preparation of the substrate
The substrate must be adequately cured, mechanically sound, free of loose particles, grease, oil, paint, wax and other
deleterious material or surface contamination and should be sufficiently dry.
Cementitious substrate must not be subject to shrinkage after tile installation. In mild weather, renders must have cured
at least 1 week for each centimeter of thickness and cementitious screeds must have cured at least 28 days, unless they
have been made with MAPEI special binders for screeds such as Mapecem, Mapecem Pronto, Topcem, Topcem Pronto.
Surfaces that could become too hot due to exposure to sunlight, consider shading or cooling down with clean water.
Gypsum substrate and anhydrite screeds must be perfectly dry (maximum residual moisture 0.5%), sufficiently hard and
free of dust. It is absolutely essential that they are treated with Primer G or Eco Prim T.

Preparation of the mix

Kerabond T must be mixed with clean water to obtain a homogenous paste free of lumps; leave to rest for approximately
5 minutes and re-mix, the paste is then ready to use. The quantity of water to be used is 25-27 per 100 parts (by weight)
equal to 6.25-6.75 L of water for 25 kg of Kerabond T grey and 27-29 per 100 parts (by weight) equal to 6.75-7.25 L of water
for 25 kg of Kerabond T white.
The mix, produced in this way, is workable for at least 8 hours (at +23ºC).
Always refer to the quantity of mixing water prescribed on the packaging.

Application the mix

Kerabond T is applied with a notched trowel onto the substrate. Choose a trowel that will give coverage to the back of the
tiles of at least 65-70% for walls or for indoor light foot traffic. For heavy traffic, total immersion and outdoor application,
the coverage must be 100%. To obtain good adhesion to the substrate the following system is recommended: first, apply a
thin coat of Kerabond T using the smooth side of the trowel and immediately after apply the desired thickness of
Kerabond T using the toothed side of the trowel. In particular:
· for mosaics up to 5x5 cm, the MAPEI No. 4 square-notched trowel is recommended;
· for normal ceramic wall tiles, the MAPEI No. 5 V-notched trowel (consumption 2.5-3 kg/m²) is recommended;
· for floors, very irregular surfaces and tiles with high ribs or lugs, the MAPEI No. 6 V-notched trowel (consumption approx.
4 kg/m²) is recommended;
· in the case of outdoor ceramic floor and wall coverings subject to freezing, or in the case of other special uses such as
swimming pools, reservoirs, tile sizes larger than 900 cm², floors to be polished after installation or subject to heavy
loads, Kerabond T should be applied evenly to the back of the tile (back-buttering).

Installing the tiles

It is not necessary to wet the tiles before installation; only in the case of very dusty back washing is recommended, by
quickly immersing them in clean water. The tiles must be installed in the normal way, placing them firmly to ensure good
contact with the adhesive. The open time of Kerabond T in normal conditions of temperature and humidity, is 20-30
minutes; unfavorable environmental conditions (strong sunlight, drying wind, high temperature as well as a highly
absorbent substrate), could drastically reduce this time to a few minutes.
Therefore one must constantly check that the adhesive has not formed a superficial skin and is still “fresh”; where there is
a formation of superficial skin, the adhesive must be reworked with the notched trowel. Wetting the adhesive after it has
produced the skin is not recommended because the water forms an anti-adhesive film instead of dissolving it. The
“adjustability” of the tiles must be carried out within 45 minutes (at +23ºC) after installation.
Tiles installed with Kerabond T must not be subject to running water or rain for at least 24 hours and must be protected
from frost and strong sunlight for at least 5-7 days after installation.

Spot bonding insulating materials

Spot bonding of sound-deadening or insulating panels should be applied using a float or trowel. The required number and
thickness are determined by the flatness of the surface and the weight of the panels.
In these cases too, the open time must be observed, bearing in mind that a few spots of adhesive on heavy panels may
require temporary shoring which should then only be removed after the Kerabond T has begun to set.

Cleaning
Tools and containers should be cleaned with plenty of water while Kerabond T is still fresh. Surfaces should be cleaned
with a damp cloth, before the adhesive dries.

GROUTING AND SEALING

Wall joints between the ceramic tiles can be grouted after 4-8 hours and floor joints can be grouted after 24 hours with
the specific MAPEI cementitious or epoxy grouts, available in different colours.
Expansion joints must be sealed with the specific MAPEI sealants.
Grout with the appropriate MAPEI grout (see Technical Data Sheet of grouts for details).

METHOD STATEMENT
KERABOND T

KERABOND T
Cementitious adhesive with no vertical slip for ceramic tiles

1.0 Surface Preparation

1.1 Surfaces to be tiled shall be sound, clean, and free from dust or other contaminants such as cement laitance,
form release agent, curing compound, paint or any other deleterious material that could impair adhesion.
1.2 Highly absorbent substrates such as gypsum or cement boards must be pre-treated with PRIMER G, diluted
with water at a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2.

2.0 Mixing

2.1 Pre measure 6.0 – 6.5 liters of clean cool water per 25kg of KERABOND T grey, or 6.5 – 7.0 litres per 25kg of
KERABOND T white, and pour into a suitably sized clean rust-free container.
2.2 Slowly add the entire powder component to the water while mixing and continue for 4 minutes, ensuring to
scrape the sides of the container, in order to obtain a homogenous, creamy and lump-free paste.
2.3 KERABOND T shall be mixed using a heavy duty slow speed drill (300 – 500 RPM) fitted with a suitable mortar
mixing paddle.
2.4 Leave the mixed material for 5 minutes after which, re-mix for a further one minute, following which the
adhesive is then ready for use.
2.5 Part mixing is not recommended.

3.0 Application

3.1 Select an appropriate notched trowel, based on the size of the tile to be installed. Trowels as recommended
by Mapei.
3.2 Using the smooth side of the notched trowel, apply a layer of adhesive on the substrate and work the
adhesive vigorously into the substrate.
3.3 Using the notched side of the trowel, immediately apply another layer of adhesive onto the substrate.
3.4 Using the straight edge of the trowel apply a thin layer of adhesive onto the back of the tile using the “Back-
buttering” technique.
3.5 Place the tile onto the fresh layer of adhesive with a twisting motion while the mortar is still wet and
workable and fully embed using a rubber mallet, gently tapping the tile into place.
3.6 Periodically, check to ensure that full adhesive coverage has been achieved by carefully and immediately
removing a single tile and visibly checking that the back of the tile is completely covered in adhesive. If full
coverage has been achieved re-fix the tile carefully as above.
3.7 If any voids are noticed using the checking technique outlined in 3.6, apply further adhesive to the localized
areas in order to achieve full coverage and replace the tiles as noted above.
3.8 Remove any excess material protruding into the tile joints, in order to ensure the proper depth of the
subsequent grouting of the joint.
3.9 The tiled area should be completely protected from pedestrian traffic or any other disturbances for a period
of 24 hours.

KERABOND T
Cementitious adhesive with no vertical slip for ceramic tiles

ISOLASTIC
Latex additive to impart elasticity to cement-based adhesive

1.0 Preparation of the substrate

1.1 All substrates receiving KERABOND T + ISOLASTIC must be flat, mechanically strong, and free from loose parts,
grease, oil, paint, wax, etc.
1.2 Precast concrete elements or in situ concrete must be fully cured in favorable weather conditions.
1.3 Cementitious substrates must not be subject to shrinkage once the tiles have been installed, renders should be
fully cured with optimum moisture content.
1.4 Cementitious screeds must have an overall cure of at least 28 days unless they have been made with the special
MAPEI binders for screeds such as MAPECEM, MAPECEM PRONTO, TOPCEM or TOPCEM PRONTO.
1.5 Surfaces that are too hot due to exposure to direct sunlight should be cooled by dampening them with water.
1.6 Gypsum substrates and anhydrite screeds must be perfectly dry (maximum residual moisture 0.5%), sufficiently
hard, and free from dust.
1.7 In common with good tiling practices, such surfaces must be sealed with PRIMER G or ECO PRIM T to ensure
uniformity of surface absorbency. Areas subject to extreme dampness must be primed with PRIMER S.

2.0 Mixing ratio

2.1 The mixing ratio is determined by the degree of deformability required of the adhesive: use ISOLASTIC as a
complete substitute for mixing water when a highly deformable adhesive (Class S2 according to EN 12004 or ISO
13007) is required, e.g. for substrates subject to significant movement such as concrete structures with less than

6 months old, for large size tiles or slabs (over 900 cm²) or for those subject to considerable sudden temperature
changes.
2.2 ISOLASTIC may be used at 50% concentration (mixed 1:1 with water) when a deformable cementitious adhesive
(Class S1 according to EN 12004 or ISO 13007) is required, e.g. on moderately unstable substrates, on sufficiently
cured concrete structures, for small formats (mosaics, tozzetti, etc.).
2.3 Premeasure 3.125 kg of clean cool water with 3.125 kg of 50% ISOLASTIC (diluted 1: 1 with water) per 25kg of
KERABOND T and pour into a suitably sized clean rust-free container. This is based on the declared water
minimum requirement for KERABOND T Grey and can be adjusted to maintain the 1:1 dilution when using the
allowed range of the declared water requirement both for Grey and White versions of the adhesive.
2.4 Slowly add the entire powder component to the liquid while mixing and continue for 4 minutes, ensuring to
scrape the sides of the container, in order to obtain a homogenous, creamy and lump-free paste.

3.0 Preparation of the mix

3.1 Pour the powder into the liquid and continuously stir the mix with a slow-speed mechanical stirrer until it
becomes a smooth paste, lump-free paste.
3.2 Allow the mix to settle for a few minutes and, after further stirring, proceed with the application.

4.0 Application of the mix

4.1 Apply the mix to the substrate with a medium-sized notched trowel. Choose a trowel that transfers the adhesive
to at least 65-70% to the back of tiles for walls and floors in light foot traffic situations and in interiors, and 100%
coverage to the back of tiles used in heavy traffic areas and outdoors.
4.2 To obtain good adhesion, first, apply a thin coat of the mix onto the substrate using the flat side of the trowel,
then immediately after applying the desired thickness of the mix using the appropriate notched trowel according
to the type and size of the tiles.
4.3 To enhance adhesion e.g. for heavy-duty traffic areas, and larger format tiles, the back buttering technique
should be utilized.

5.0 Installing the tiles

Note: Follow the same recommendations as outlined in the Technical Data Sheet for the adhesive which ISOLASTIC is
to be mixed with. However, greater attention should be paid to the open time which, in the equivalent relative
temperature and humidity conditions, will be slightly shorter than the open time of the basic product.

5.1 It is not necessary to wet the tiles before installation; only in the case of very dusty back washing is
recommended, by quickly immersing them in clean water.
5.2 The tiles must be installed in the normal way, placing them firmly to ensure good contact with the adhesive.
5.3 The open time of KERABOND T in normal conditions of temperature and humidity, is 20-30 minutes; unfavorable
environmental conditions (strong sunlight, drying wind, high temperature as well as a highly absorbent
substrate), could drastically reduce this time to a few minutes. Therefore, one must constantly check that the
adhesive has not formed a superficial skin and is still “fresh”; where there is a formation of superficial skin, the
adhesive must be reworked with the notched trowel.
5.4 Wetting the adhesive after it has produced the skin is not recommended because the water forms an anti-
adhesive film instead of dissolving it.

5.5 The “adjustability” of the tiles must be carried out within 45 minutes (at +23ºC) after installation.
5.6 Tiles installed with KERABOND T must not be subject to running water or rain for at least 24 hours and must be
protected from frost and strong sunlight for at least 5-7 days after installation.

6.0 Grouting and sealing

6.1 Wall joints between the ceramic tiles can be grouted after 4-8 hours and floor joints can be grouted after 24
hours with the specific MAPEI cementitious or epoxy grouts, available in different colours.
6.2 Expansion joints must be sealed with the specific MAPEI sealants.
6.3 Grout with the appropriate MAPEI grout (see Technical Data Sheet of grouts for details).

7.0 Storage / Precautions

Where temperatures are greater than 35°C, it is suggested to adopt one or more of the following precautions, in order
to improve the workability and open time of the product:

7.1 Keep stored material and mixing equipment out of direct sunlight.
7.2 Store the adhesives and liquids in a temperature-controlled environment (maximum 25°C) for a period of at least
48 hours prior to use.
7.3 Avoid application during the hottest time of the day and/or direct sunlight.

PRIMER G
Synthetic-resin-based water-dispersion primer with very low volatile organic compound (VOC)

ECO PRIM T
Acrylic primer in water dispersion with very low emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC)

PRIMER S
Waterproofing primer in water dispersion

6 months old, for large size tiles or slabs (over 900 cm²) or for those subject to considerable sudden temperature
changes.
2.2 KERABOND T + ISOLASTIC at 100%: mix a 25 kg bag of KERABOND T with about 8 - 8.5 kg of ISOLASTIC.
2.3 Premeasure 8-8.5Kg of ISOLASTIC per 25Kg of KERABOND T and pour into a suitably sized clean rust-free
container. Slowly add the entire powder component to the liquid while mixing and continue for 4 minutes,
ensuring to scrape the sides of the container, in order to obtain a homogenous, creamy and lump-free paste.

Required Equipment

• Slow speed mixing drill (300-500 RPM) fitted with a suitable mortar mixing paddle
• Flat trowel / Scraper / Spatula or filing knife
• Notched trowel, with a notched profile suitable for the installation
• Roller/Brush for primer
• Ample amount of clean water for cleaning tiles & tools
• Clean, rust-free empty buckets
• Rubber mallet

Approval and Variations

This method statement is offered as a ‘Standard Guideline’ for the application of KERABOND T + ISOLASTIC. It remains the responsibility of the
Engineer to determine the correct method for any given application. Mapei will not accept responsibility or liability for variations to the above
method statement under any other condition.
