Introduction

FP – 1/2/J is a fire fighting stationary pumps station designed, built,


installed, and tested in coherence with EN12485.

Main Components

a- One electrically driven end suction flexible coupled pump, model


number NSCC 50-250/220, LOWARA made, complete with 22
kW motor, WEG Motors made, built, assembled, installed, and
tested in coherence with EN12485.
b- One diesel engine driven end suction flexible coupled pump,
model number NSC 50-250/D232, LOWARA made, complete
with 42 hp diesel engine, LOMBARDINI made, built,
assembled, installed, and tested in coherence with EN12485.
c- One inline vertical multi-stage pump acting as jockey, model
number 1VM08P11T, LOWARA made.
d- The main electric pump has its own controller, model number
Q1FD/220, LOWARA made built, installed, and tested in
coherence with EN12485.
e- The main diesel engine driven pump has its own controller,
model number DMEN50-250, LOWARA made built, installed,
and tested in coherence with EN12485.
f- The jockey pump has its own controller model number
QPD10/15 03, LOWARA made.

Accessories
a- One test line with one DN80X65 flow meter, in coherence with
EN12485.
b- Each main pump has a minimum flow arrangement in coherence
with EN12485.
c- Each main pump has a vacuum pressure gauge assembly at its
suction flange.
d- Each main pump has a pressure gauge assembly at its discharge
flange.
e- Each main pump has its own 2 pressure switches with nominal
pressure of 16 bar, in coherence with EN12485.
Actual Pumps’ details

 Main fire pumps’ accessories, minimum flow arrangement, Pressure


gauges, pressure switches, etc. were installed in coherence with
the norm.

 Main fire pumps’ devices, suction and discharge ON/OFF valves,


non-return check valves are installed in coherence with the norm.

 Test line and flow meter are installed in coherence with the norm.

 Cables between each pump and its controller are installed in


coherence with the norm.

 All controllers are installed in coherence with the norm in terms of


location, protection, and nominal values.

Operation Sequence and Pressure Set Points

As per EN12485, the only acceptable way to start the main fire pumps
is by means of pressure. In case the main pump is started due to a low
pressure situation, i.e. sprinkler or hose is opened, the pumps shall
keep on running until put off manually as per the following EN12485
article:

Accordingly, the pressure set values of the pumps shall be the


following:

- Jockey pump stop set value: 8 bar


- Jockey pump start set value: 6.5 bar

- First duty main pump stop set value: 6 bar


- First duty main pump start set value: 7 bar (pump should be
stopped manually)

- Second duty main pump stop set value: 5.5 bar


- Second duty main pump start set value: 7 bar (pump should be
stopped manually)

Field acceptance test

It was done as advised by the factory which is sufficient to derive the


pump’s performance curve to compare with the manufacturer’s curve,
6 points were read for each main pump which included flow, suction
pressure, discharge pressure, current, and voltage, other needed
readings as BHP, efficiency, NPSHr, and NPSHa, were calculated, see
attached appendix C field test report.

Additional readings were taken such as: temperature values, vibration


values, all were acceptable and satisfactory.

Final Thought

It goes without saying that any additional tests and/or clarifications


required by the engineer will be done and/or answered.

Tools needed:
1- Multi-meter
2- Simple electrical tools (e.g. plier, screw driver, etc.).
3- Wrench set.
4- Vibration pen
5- Thermometer

1. Verify the installation thoroughly (prior to start up)


a. Check suction and discharge piping and valve/ accessory
installation.
b. Pipes must not impose any stress on the pumps.
c. The pipe’s size should be equal or bigger than that of the
pump(s), both sides.
d. Check the distance between the elbow and the pump, noting
that the permitted distance should be at least 6 – 8 times the
flange size of the pump’s suction and discharge.
e. For double suction split case pump, horizontal elbow on suction
side is not permitted.
f. Check whether there is sufficient suction pressure demand for
water in order to operate the pump.
g. Check the used suction valves to be monitored.
h. Check foundation is secure.
i. Check all wiring connections between pump and control panel.
j. Check pump-motor alignment.
k. Check the installation of the minimum flow arrangement.
l. Rotate pump shaft by hand using an appropriate wrench.
m. Check clearance around the pump for repair.
n. Check clearance on the motor fan side, it should be at least 2 –
3 times the diameter of the fan, this is critical for the cooling of
the motor.
o. Check that the pump(s) suction pipe(s) does not create any
problems in reference of the NPSH of the pump(s).
p. Check test circuit.
q. In case a flow meter is used for testing the pump, confirm the
appropriate distances before and after the unit. It should be as
the hereafter.

2. Preparing the pumps for start up:

a. Check that the power is the same as the pump(s) and the
control panel.
b. Check the presence of all the phases.
c. Check that the motor starter (e.g. circuit breaker, contactor or
soft start/stop) is the correct size of the pump.
d. Check the resistance (ohm) between the windings and between
the windings and EARTH terminal of each pump.
e. Check that the pump is connected as per the IOM (electrical
connections chapter).
f. Apply grease to the bearings. Where applicable.
g. Suction valve should be 100% open.
h. Discharge valve should be 40% open.
i. Start each pump manually to check rotation.
j. Start up each pump manually and check its consumed current (it
should be equal or less than the nominal current). Reading
should be done at the duty point.
k. Check all of the indication lamps.
l. Check the audible alarms if available.
m. Calibrate the start and stop pressure values in coherence with
the NORM.
n. Start the field test.
o. Confirm that the pump is delivering the needed flow at the
required head.
3. Maintenance and check out routine procedures

a. Check the availability of the sufficient water volume from the


main source.
b. Check the availability of the correct Power supply.
c. Clean the suction strainer regularly to insure no solid parts
inside the pump impellers, if installed.
d. After any inspection of the pumps the air vent (priming) must be
done before restarting the pumps. Where applicable.
e. Recheck the alignment of the pump-motor at least every 2000
hours or as per the pump’s instruction manual, or after each
repair (where applicable).
