Some people say that economic growth is the only way to end world
poverty and hunger. Others say that economic growth is causing
damage to the environment ,and should be stopped now. Discuss both
views and give your opinion.

参考范文
Thanks to the great strides mankind made in economy, people are becoming increasingly
wealthy and much less likely to be starving. However, there is still a claim that due to its
adverse impacts on the environment, it is necessary for us to stop economic growth.

Admittedly, the more progress we made in economy the less possible people may be faced
with famine. In today’s society, we already have advanced agricultural technology to feed
billions of people. The only problem in this area is a lack of fundamental social security that
provide money and food to those poorest people. In this case, as the development of
economy generates much wealth for the entire population, it is capable of improving the
situation.

However, economic development may not be necessarily able to eliminate poverty. In many
countries, the rising revenue of firms resulting from the development of economy mainly
benefit their owners and shareholders, only a small fraction of the income is allocated to
their employees, which means the improvement of life standard for ordinary people is rather
limited. Worse still, the development of economy often leads to ever-higher prices of real
estates in large cities, which will obviously drive up the cost of living in many aspects. For
example, if the rental goes up, the prices of the beef sold in a supermarket could increase
consequently. Therefore, it is not wise to base the hope of eliminating poverty on the
development of economy.

On the other hand, people who claim that economic growth has a negative effect on the
environment are not entirely misguided. The price we have to pay for making more money is
usually heavier emissions of waste gas and water, which seriously affects the environment.
But if more serious monitoring comes into effects and put more investments into relevant
technology, the impacts can be limited to a minimum level.

In conclusion, my view is that economic advances can remove hunger but do not play a
decisive role in eliminating poverty. However, although economic growth has negative
impacts on the environment, it is still wise to promote our economy, as long as we pay more
attention to its downside.

In some countries, the difference in age between parents and children is

generally greater than it was in the past. Do you think advantages
outweigh disadvantages?

参考范文:
While there were also gaps between different generations in the past, the gaps existing
today are getting larger due to the rapid development of technology and the changing
society. From my perspective, this trend obvious brings more problems than benefits.

The most obvious consequence of such gaps is the difficulty in communication, which is of
significant importance between parents and children and between adults and their old
parents. When people are raising their children, one of the most challenging things is how to
impart right opinions to the young kids. Owing to different life experience and varying levels
of cognitive power, they tend to have different understandings upon a same thing. In this
case, parents often find it hard to persuade their little child to respond in the same way.

The same sense of inability occurs when adults are dealing with their old parents. As we all
know, the elderly are often too stubborn and slow to accept new things and new ideas. As a
consequence, they may face a lot of problems when using new tech products, such as when
using a cell phone application to battle for a train ticket. Besides, they are also more
vulnerable to many risks in the new electronic era. For example, as they have little knowledge
of the threats from the internet, they may be deceived and robbed of money by online fraud
rather than trust their own children.

In conclusion, considering the consequential troubles we may meet in communication, the

increasing gap between people of different ages obvious brings more drawbacks than
advantages.

Some people think that printed books are no longer needed in a digital
era because all writing can be stored electronically. Others think that
printed books will still play an important role. Discuss both and give your
own opinion.

参考范文:
Technological advance has brought about tremendous changes in a wide variety of aspects
of life, including the way people access information. It is therefore argued that paper books,
magazines, and newspaper are no longer necessary. From where I stand, this point of view is
not entirely convincing.

It is indeed true that acquiring information through electronic devices is favored by an

increasing number of people due to its many merits. The most appealing one is that this is a
significantly convenient way to gain enormous information from a whole range of sources.
People can find most of the things they want to know about on the websites without
stepping out of their homes. Besides, the access to online materials can normally be
achieved much more cheaply, if not totally free. This is very understandable, considering the
low cost of spreading information on line.

However, this does not mean that traditional printed versions can be completely replaced.
There are still a considerable number of people who prefer to explore the world by reading a
physical book or a piece of newspaper. To them, this might also be a way to create a quiet
and private space where they can reach their inner peace, especially when they are
surrounded by something annoying, or when there is no internet access. Another point that
should not be overlooked is that print media generally need to go through strict censorship
before coming to the readers. By contrast, posing information on the Internet is far more
easy, making its credibility much more questionable.

In conclusion, while computers and other electronic devices provide people with convenient
and economical access to information, I do not think they would take the place of print
books and other print media, at least not very soon.

The international community should take action immediately to reduce

the consumption of fossil fuels. such as gas and oil. To what extent do
you agree or disagree?

参考范文:
Due to the increasing risk of climate disasters as a result of worsening climate, changes in the
attitudes towards the use of fossil fuels are afoot across the world. Although the economy of
many countries is still highly dependent on petrol, diesel, coal and natural gas, I think the
international society should act immediately to diminish their usage.

One the one hand, there are reasons behind the reluctance of many countries to apply more
environmentally-friendly methods of producing energy. The main reason why fossil fuel
resources (including coal, oil and gas) are widely applied despite their negative effects is that
they are cheap and capable of creating large amounts of energy needed in human’s daily
lives and industrial sectors. Therefore, although there are cleaner alternatives like solar power
or nuclear energy, fossil fuels still represent the most cost-effective choice for a large
number of developing countries, since it is difficult for them to develop advanced energy
projects and to afford their use.

Hesitations about the reduction of fossil fuels usage, though, may put mankind at grave risk
of disastrous climate deterioration at a global level, whose negative impacts are far more
serious than its economic benefits. For example, carbon dioxide or other heat-trapping
gases stemming from the burning of fossil fuels are the major culprit behind global warming,
which inflicts substantial damage on the entire world, such as increases in disastrous wildfires
in forests, flooding and erosion on the coast, and soil loss along rivers. Thus, although it may
be expensive for many countries to get rid of fossil fuels, it is still the only way to prevent
future catastrophes.

In conclusion, global efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels are now urgently needed. To
prevent all human beings from inhaling poisonous gas and facing the impacts of uncertain
climate, every country and individual should participate in this life-or-death battle.

Some people think that companies and private individuals should pay to
clear up the pollution they produced, the government should not pay for
it, to what extent do you agree or disagree?

参考范文:
Nowadays, the problem of pollution has been increasingly severe so it is imperative that
actions be taken to address this problem. There is a point of view that funds needed for
these actions should come from companies and private institutions instead of the
government. From where I stand, this is wholly justified.

We should first realize that the government only has a limited amount of funding so it
should be cautious about how to allocate the budget. If the government has to pay for the
costs of pollution control, it might lead to the over-consumption of public funding, which
mostly come from taxpayers. And this would then have a negative influence on the
construction of basic infrastructure and the improvement of public services, giving rise to
discontent among the public.

Furthermore, it is universally accepted that one should compensate for what one has done
wrong. This is also applicable to the pollution situation. If private organizations or individuals
have produced waste water, exhaust gas or solid waste that would pose a threat to the
environment, it is definitely their responsibility to pay for the cleaning up. This is why a large
number of countries have legislated anti-pollution laws, imposing tax penalties on
pollution-intensive Industries.

Another point which is worth mentioning is that the polluter pays principle could also
encourage sustainable development. If the party responsible for producing pollution is held
responsible for paying for the damage done to the environment, then companies and
industries will be motivated to adopt eco-friendly technologies and equipment. It is these
actions that could fundamentally reduce pollution.

In conclusion, I fully agree with the opinion that those who have produced pollution should
pay for dealing with it since only in this way could long-term pollution control be achieved.

The world of work is changing rapidly and people cannot depend on

the same job or same conditions of work for life. Discuss the possible
causes for this rapid change and give your suggestions on how people
should prepare for work in the future?

参考范文

The volatility in people’s jobs is a result of the fast-changing world today. Job-hopping is
now increasingly common in the society. This essay is intended to discuss the specific
reasons behind this trend and try to offer some useful suggestions.

The development of information technology should be first responsible for this change.
Compared to the past, when people had poor knowledge of how much they could earn in
another company or another city, today’s employees are more able to know the differences
between salaries and other aspects of welfare these companies offer. Therefore, if there is a
huge difference and the employee believes he/she are competent for the new job, it is very
likely for him/her to make a change.

Beyond more transparent information, a more advanced transportation system also

facilitates the moves of talents. With more efficient metro and road networks, people in
today’s era are much more likely to work far from where they live than their fathers so that
they have a much wider range of companies to choose from.

Last but not least, the fiercer competition within their industries is also why some of the
employees to change their jobs. The advent of some breakthrough technologies, ranging
from artificial intelligence to big data analytics, is transforming almost every industry, kicking
out those who stop learning new knowledge and skills, and reducing the posts available in
some lucrative firms. This means a higher rate of firing and forces many of the employees to
leave for another job.

I have 2 pieces of advice for graduates who are about to enter the employment market. I still
firmly believe it is necessary for students to achieve higher scores and better performances in
school so that they can lay a solid foundation for their future careers. However, it is also
important to form an idea that life-long learning is increasingly important and may be even
more significant than schooling for their future competitiveness as the world is changing at a
stunning pace and they must be ready for the challenges.

Although the family have a powerful influence on children 's life, the
influence outside from home is a bigger part for his/her development. To
what extent do you agree or disagree?

参考范文:

For thousands of years since the dawn of humanity, parents are always considered vital in
the rearing of their children. However, there is also a widely held view that compared to the
parents, the outside world has greater influence on their growth. I completely agree with this
opinion.

On the one hand, parenting is of course playing an important role in children’s growth.
When children come to the world, the people they meet first are obviously their parents. As a
result, the formation of their initial personalities and the acquisition of some basic skills both
rely solely on them.

However, the impacts from outside world tend to have greater influence on their
development. Taking schooling as an example, even if their parents are well educated, they
are just not qualified enough to impart all the knowledge and skills their kids need in their
future careers more to them. So schooling is the place where children can learn knowledge
systematically. Apart from that, through specially designed lessons and activities, schooling
also assists teenagers to learn how to behave well and establish correct values. Another
significant source of impacts on children’s development is their social experience. As they
grow older, teenagers often have more chances to have contacts with the outside world.
Since they are interacting with more people, they may have a better understanding of the
world.

In conclusion, I am convinced that the communication between children and the outside
world plays a more important role in children’s development compared to their parents’.

In modern age, some people think it is unnecessary to teach children the

skill of handwriting, to what extent do you agree or disagree?

参考范文:

In the recent decade, a great variety of technological advances have changed many aspects
of our life, including how we deliver information. Hence, it is argued that handwriting is no
longer a necessary skills that children need to learn at a young age. I am afraid I could not
fully agree with this opinion.

It is indeed true that handwriting has been replaced by typing in more and more occasions
as electronic devices, such as laptops, tablets and mobile phones, have been increasingly
popular. Compared with handwriting, typing is much more convenient and efficient, so it is
understandable why many people would prefer typing if they have a choice. However, this
does not mean that there is no need to teach the handwriting skill any more.

The first thing to note is that typing has not completely taken the place of handwriting. There
are still numerous cases where handwriting is required, especially when high-tech devices
are not available. If children did not have a command of this skill, they would be likely to
misspell the words or write the letters wrong, which would tremendously undermine their
confidence and make them feel incompetent.

Furthermore, handwriting is more than simply putting letters on paper. Although writing
each letter with a pen is definitely more time-consuming and energy-consuming, this is also
a process of individuating. By learning how to write, children could also learn how to express
themselves and how to show their characteristics in a personalized way. This is also why a
handwriting letter is far more touching and impressive than an email.

In conclusion, despite the increasing popularity of electronic devices, handwriting is still a

very significant skill for children to learn, not only because they will have to hand write in
some cases, but also because handwriting is an individualized way of expression.

In modern world, it is no longer necessary to use animals for food or use

animal products, for instance, clothing and medicines. To what extent do
you agree or disagree?

参考范文:

The debate on whether we should employ animals for foods or other commodities is
certainly a fractious one. Despite the arguments that animals serve no value and should be
sacrificed for human’s welfare, my firm conviction is that they should only be utilized for
some necessary needs.

On the one hand, as mankind has created many artificial materials, the usage of animals
should be limited effectively. Taking clothing manufacturing sector as an example, as an
increasing number of high-tech alternatives to fur and leather have been produced, human
beings should gradually restrict the use of animals in producing garments and finally ban it
completely. Another area where animal use should be cautiously considered is pharmacy. In
the knowledge system of modern medicine, there is little scientific proof of the effectiveness
of using animal products as medicines. In contrast, man-made ingredients have much more
clear efficiency.

However, it is not yet realistic to totally abandon animal use in all areas. Most obviously, we
still depend heavily on them in food industry to produce essential proteins for human bodies.
This does not mean we are cruel but reflects that we are still not advanced enough in food
technology. Someday, when we find some way to produce proteins without animals and
create some relevant delicious food, I believe the human society will not kill animal any more.

In conclusion, in some areas, such as clothing and medicine, it is no longer necessary for
human beings to use animal products. But it is still impossible for us to make our meals
animal free.

Nowadays some older people choose to live in the retirement

communities with other people rather than living with adult children. Is it

a positive or negative development?

参考范文

Most people have considered how and where to spend their life after retirement. It has been
noticed in many parts of the world that retirement villages are increasingly popular among
the elderly. This phenomenon has both pros and cons.

On the bright side, this could have a positive influence on economic growth. Young and
middle-aged people would be able to make greater efforts in the workplace if their elders
have chosen to live in a retirement community instead of living with them. Without having to
worry about their old parents at home, these employers could devote more time and more
energies to their work, so they are more likely to have higher career achievement and make
a larger contribution to society.

In addition, senior citizens who live in a retirement home may enjoy better care than those
who live with their children. This is mainly because staff in these institutions are usually
required to have professional knowledge and skills in regard to how to look after elderly
people. Hence, this is especially valuable for those old people with medical conditions. Also,
living in a place filled with people at similar ages, they might feel less lonely with each other’s
company.

On the other side, it should also be acknowledged that this trend might undermine the
emotional bonding between old people and the younger members of their family. The
reason why this might happen is that some people seldom, if not never, visit or call their
parents after putting them in an institution. Therefore, this issue could be addressed if these
seniors’ children and grandchildren keep in contact with them and pay a visit to them
regularly.

In conclusion, despite a potential problem that could be dealt with, the growing popularity of
the retirement home is an overall positive development as it is beneficial to both the society
and the individuals.

Nowadays people are living in a 'thrown-away' society where they use things
for a short time and then throwaway. What cause this and what problem it may
lead to?
参考范文

Several decades ago, people used to cherish old items and would rather repair them than
buy new ones. Today, however, they choose to replace them frequently. This essay is
intended to discuss the causes behind this trend and what effects it leads to.

To start with, this phenomenon should be first attributed to the development of technology
and relevant industries. As more and more commodities today are produced on assembly
lines that are mainly operated by robots, the prices of goods have been slashed. In this case,
when consumers weighing the cost of buying new items and repairing the old ones, the first
choice appears much more attractive.

A second contributing factor is the rise of average income. Compared to the past, when the
majority of the labour force in many countries only had a salary to defray their basic needs,
such as food and rental, the recent decades witnessed a considerable soar in their returns.
These people thus naturally have much more requirements, like a larger TV set, a brand new
set of furniture, which facilitates this change.

Hence, the reasons why people are now inclined to purchase new items are closely related to
cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, the effects caused by this trend are much more complex
and bittersweet. The most obvious impact of this phenomenon is negative. Since an
increasing number of old items are thrown away, it requires large amounts of money and
energy to dispose of them, considering the difficulties in full recycling. On the hand, this
phenomenon creates more job opportunities, as people consume much more commodities.

In conclusion, the causes of people throwing away old items is their rising income and the
lower prices of new times. And while this trend creates large numbers of jobs, it also leads to
the problems of recycling.

Today,Many people spend less and less time in their homes. what’s the

reason for it? What are the effects of this trend on individuals and society?

参考范文:

There have been significant changes in different aspects of people’s life. One noticeable
phenomenon is that for many people, time spent at home is decreasing . This essay will try to
explain why this would happen and analyze how it may influence both individuals and
society.

This phenomenon is caused by multiple reasons, one of which is that the stressful working
condition renders working overtime increasingly frequent. This is especially the case in major
cities, where, due to the fierce competition, individuals are often required to devote
enormous time and energy to their work so as to strive for professional development. Hence,
a large number of employees have no choice but to spend much more time in the workplace
than in their homes.

Another contributing factor is that many people, especially youngsters, find the outside
world more attractive than staying at home. Thanks to the economic growth and
technological advance, people nowadays are able to enjoy a great variety of leisure activities
outside their homes, such as traveling to another city or even another country. Therefore,
spending an enormous amount of time having fun outside seems preferable to many of
them.

In terms of the impacts, this might pose a threat to the relationship between family members,
which is harmful to both individuals and society. If people spend too little time at home with
their families, they are less likely to establish a mutual understanding with other members of
the family, so that the emotional bonding between them is highly likely to be undermined.
The vulnerable family relationship would adversely affect individuals’ mental condition and
even social cohesion.

In conclusion, the pressure from work and the temptation outside are the possible reasons
why many people spend inadequate time in their homes. With family bonding impaired, this
phenomenon might lead to mental health issues and the lack of social cohesion.
