Lesson4- The Luncheon

W Somerset Maugham
A. Think and answer.

1. How does the author describe the woman when he met her at Foyot’s?

A. The author described the woman to be more impressive rather than attractive. She
gave him the impression of having more teeth which were large and white. She was
also very talkative.

2. Why do you think that woman thought the author to be mean?

A. The payment of the bill made the author poor because he had barely enough money
to pay the bill and the tip. After he had paid the bill, the author had three francs for the tip
and thus, we think that the woman thought the author to be mean.

3. Why did the author think he had had his revenge?

A. The author thought he had had his revenge when he met the lady at a play twenty
years later. During the luncheon, the lady kept on saying how she had only one thing for
lunch
and how one must stop eating before one is full. But twenty years later, she weighed
twenty-one stone, indicating she had not followed her own advice of eating moderately.
This gave the author his revenge.

4. The lady kept saying she never ate more than one thing for lunch and
reprimanded the author for eating meat. How was she contradicting herself at lunch
with the author?
A. The lady contradicted herself at the lunch with the author. Before the lunch started,
she said she will have only one thing for lunch. However, as the lunch progressed, she
kept ordering the most expensive food items all while saying she had only one thing for
lunch. She did not offer anything to the author rather lectured him that he ate too much
and one must finish lunch when one feels that one can eat a little more.
B. Read the extracts given below and answer the questions that follow.

asparagus, as he had barely enough money to pay the bill.

2.”Then a terrible thing happened.”

2. a. What ‘terrible thing’ happened?

Ans. The ‘ terrible thing’ that happened was that while the speaker and his guest were
waiting for the coffee, the waiter came up with a large basket of peaches which were
expensive. This added to the speaker’s woes as he was not sure if he had enough money
to pay for the lunch.
