CONNECTING ROD

CONNECTING rod is the engine component used for joining and transferring force from piston to the
crack shift. It also converts reciprocating motion of piston to the rotation al motion of crank shaft.
Connecting rods can be made from Carbon steel and aluminum ALLOY, Aluminum alloy has some
superior properties in comparison to carbon steel and aluminum high tensile strength and light weight.
Titanium also provides the combination of those properties but here to compromise with affordability.
connecting rod ha two ends small and big end is connected as press fit to the piston with help of bolts.
common catastrophic engine failure in cars is connecting rod and is also called ‘’throwing a rod’’(1). In
connecting rod failure can occur due to the defective maintenance, rod bolts failure or improper
tightening. Normally failures are seen in competitive automobile events. As connecting cutting rods is
designed by taking high factor of safety in normal use, so it does not get such failures (1). THE
Combination for cross section of conne3cting rod can be two types IP-BEAM & h- BEAM TAKE CARE OF
LARGE STRESAS AND ANXOIETY WITHPOUT FLEXING SO USED IN HIGH POWER ENGINES.

I-BEAM MANAHIGH PRESSURE, LIGHT and strong. A study H-beam profile is better than I-beam profile
because it has more stability – uo to 43.1% and von misses stresses mare also less up to 12.3% (average-
15.7%). But I – beam is used more as its easier and less expensive to manufacture it (2). In a study it is
found that the connecting rod of al- alloy has the highest maximum deformation and structural steel
connecting rod Has the highest maximum stress (3). For finding out the mechanical properties of the
system finite element methods is used [4,5]. theFEnumerical model may be not giving us actual structure
but the approximation will be sufficient to predict the strength and failure of the model, no precaution
can be added at the prior staginess [6]. Recreate meshing mode of component and then it is analyzed. in
2D the meshing is very easily [7]. die casting is the process through which piston can be made. by this
process accurate com [ponents can be made with high surface finish [8]. Fatigue mis more common in
animative vehicles, aircraft etc. so accurate design and manufacturing is also important factor to reduce
such a factor by a greater extent [9]

Buckling load failure analysis of connecting rod is also done in some research papers at the condition of
sudden locking of piston, at this condition the connecting rod experiences higher impact load also known
hydro- lock failure (cause: excess amount of fuel air mixture or water leakage INTO cylinder) [10]. In this
type of failure merchant – Rankine APPROACH for buckling is inappropriate and forged steel rod or other
components increases efficiency of I.C. engine.
