One Third

If someone had told Hermione when she was younger that she’d be shagging Draco Malfoy
casually, she would have thought them crazy at the very least and told them so.
She was still not exactly sure where the two of them began. That doesn’t surprise her much
since she’d never been good at beginnings. She was always too fast, too smart, too brilliant,
too annoying, too intense, just too much to start things right.
She figured it probably started when she, Harry and Ron ended. Hermione wasn’t good at
endings either. She just pretended whatever she lost was never there, but Ron and Harry
weren’t something she could erase from her mind and heart.
(“Never wrong, are you Hermione?” Ron snapped.
He could always get under her skin like no one else. Hermione grabbed his wrist and their
eyes met. Hermione never quite realized how blue Ron’s eyes were before.
“No, I’m not.” Hermione said. She’d already forgotten what they were fighting about.
Ron pressed his hand on the back of her neck and pushed her forward. His thumb and index
finger pinched some skin and she winced slightly.
“I’m sorry!” He said, his eye wide, and clearly panicked.
“Relax your hand.” Hermione said. And when he did, she continued. “And then wrap your
arms around my waist and gently – gently – press me against you and – ”
Her words were cut off by his lips. She almost broke away to yell at him, but then she felt his
arms tremble slightly and she leaned closer to him and did her best to relax.)
While Hermione wasn’t quite sure how she and Malfoy began, she knew exactly why they
did.
Hermione dug her nails into Malfoy’s shoulder as he bit hard on the base of her neck.
(“No!” Harry snapped. “You can’t!”
Ron shook his head. “There’s no other way.”
Detached and clinical, Hermione said in an even tone, “He’s right Harry, there’s no other
choice.”
Harry turned his glare on her and said coolly, “There’s always a choice.”
She matched that glare.
“Yeah,” Ron said. “And it’s mine to make.”)
Hermione suddenly turned around swiftly and pushed Malfoy against the wall.
“Feeling kinky, Granger?” Malfoy said.
“You have no idea,” Hermione said before covering his mouth with hers.
(Hermione vowed to be strong for Harry when Ron cast the spell, but as Ron screamed as his
own blood soaked into his clothes, she grabbed Harry and pressed her face into his neck and
sobbed.)
Hermione clutched her pillow against her heart and closed her eyes. She wasn’t sure who she
hated more: Harry and Ron for leaving her, or herself.
(“I hate this.”
Tears built up behind Hermione’s eyes, blurring the vision of Ron’s casket being lowered into
the ground. She grabbed Harry’s hand and he rested his head on her shoulder.
“I’ll make Voldemort pay for this.” Harry said.
“No,” Hermione said as some man who had never meet Ron before started to talk about him
and the sacrifices he made. “We will.”
“Hermione – ”
“No, Harry, this isn’t just your fight. We’re a team. I’m going to be with you every step of the
way.”
“I’m afraid I’ll lose you, too.” Harry said.
“Harry, I have that same fear.”
Harry stared at her as if he’d never quite seen her before. “Thanks.”)
She looked down at Malfoy and the answer suddenly became clear to her.
“I heard that you are shagging Malfoy.”
Hermione tensed and turned around to face Ginny.
Ginny continued. “I always thought you had better taste.”
“You don’t really have room to talk, from what I’ve heard.” Hermione said.
Ginny’s face flushed and she clenched her fist. “At least I don’t spread my legs for men
who’ll help my career.”
(“I told you to be careful!” Hermione said, shaking Harry with all her might.
Harry coughed and gave her a small smile. “He’s gone.”
“Oh, Harry!” Hermione’s tears fell down her face and landed on Harry’s.
“Just don’t let me die alone.” Harry said, closing his eyes.
Hermione felt her heart sink as she realized that she’d never see his bright eyes again. She
gently grabbed him, wrapped her arms around him, and pressed him against her and
watched him die.)
“You know nothing,” Hermione said and turned around and walked away before she could
see the pain in Ginny’s eyes. She really couldn’t blame Ginny for hating her.
“You know nothing.”
Draco watched Granger walk down the hall.
(“Avada Kedavra!”
Draco felt his blood run cold as Pansy fell to the ground next to his Mum, dead. It took every
bit of self-restraint he had not to jump and attack the Dark Lord.
He had to make a plan.)
“Granger!” Draco said after Weasely stormed out of the building.
Granger turned around. “What do you want?”
(“Why should I help you?” Potter said.
“You were there when Dumbledore died and you know that he said he’d help me. You
wouldn’t turn your back on that, would you?”
“What reason would you have to turn away from Voldemort?” Granger said.
“Glory. You guys always win.” Draco said.
Potter rolled his eyes and Granger pointed his wand at him. “Give me a real reason, or I’ll
kill you.”
It suddenly struck Draco that he wasn’t the only one who’d grown up in this war. Glaring at
them and curling his lip slightly, he said, “Because he killed the only people I loved.”
Granger and Potter exchanged a look.
“I can’t promise you much.” Potter said after a long moment.)
“Since when did you let anyone walk all over you?” Draco said.
“Since when do you care?” Granger said.
“I don’t.” Draco said, lifting an eyebrow. “But you would become boring if you became a
pushover instead of a fighter.”
“Don’t you know, Draco?” Granger said with a small smile, her voice dipped in bitterness. “I
don’t have anymore fight left in me.”
If someone had told Hermione when she was younger that she’d be shagging Draco Malfoy
casually, she would have thought them crazy at the very least.
